But how did the crisis come about, why was it so deep, and why has the clean-up been so slow and painful? Many accounts of the crisis focus on renegade activity in marginal financial sectors. Shadow Networks challenges this pervading view and sets out to demonstrate that, far from a dissident branch, the shadow finance that initiated the crisis is tightly networked with, and highly profitable for, bank-based finance. The collapse was not an accident, but baked into the system of finance from the start. Shadow Networks traces the complex web of power that caused crisis and gives vivid descriptions of the actors in the quarter century leading up to 2007 to explain how the now decade-long crisis took shape. Shadow Networks: Financial Disorder and the System that Caused Crisis is a probing examination of the roles of the powerful elite. It traces the networks and institutions that support a finance-focused, market centered model of economy and society from their ascendancy to their surprising resilience in the face of manifest failures.

Book excerpt: Ayn Rand’s complicated notoriety as popular writer, leader of a political and philosophical cult, reviled intellectual, and ostentatious public figure endured beyond her death in 1982. In the twenty-first century, she has been resurrected as a serious reference point for mainstream figures, especially those on the political right from Paul Ryan to Donald Trump. Mean Girlfollows Rand’s trail through the twentieth century from the Russian Revolution to the Cold War and traces her posthumous appeal and the influence of her novels via her cruel, surly, sexy heroes. Outlining the impact of Rand’s philosophy of selfishness, Mean Girl illuminates the Randian shape of our neoliberal, contemporary culture of greed and the dilemmas we face in our political present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do humans who seem to be exemplars of virtue also have the capacity to act in atrocious ways? What are the roots of tendencies for sin and evil? A popular assumption is that it is our animalistic natures that are responsible for human immorality and sin, while our moral nature curtails and contains such tendencies through human powers of freedom and higher reason. This book challenges such assumptions as being far too simplistic. Through a careful engagement with evolutionary and psychological literature, Celia Deane-Drummond argues that tendencies towards vice are, more often than not, distortions of the very virtues that are capable of making us good. After beginning with Augustine's classic theory of original sin, the book probes the philosophical implications of sin's origins in dialogue with the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. Different vices are treated in both individual and collective settings in keeping with a multispecies approach. Areas covered include selfishness, pride, violence, anger, injustice, greed, envy, gluttony, deception, lying, lust, despair, anxiety, and sloth. The work of Thomas Aquinas helps to illuminate and clarify much of this discussion on vice, including those vices which are more distinctive for human persons in community with other beings. Such an approach amounts to a search for the shadow side of human nature, shadow sophia. Facing that shadow is part of a fuller understanding of what makes us human and thus this book is a contribution to both theological anthropology and theological ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Forged in the Shadow of Mars, Peter W. Sposato traces chivalry's powerful influence on the mentalitè and behavior of a sizeable segment of the elite in late medieval Florence. He finds that the strenuous knights and men-at-arms of the Florentine chivalric elite—a cultural community comprised of men from both traditional and newly emerged elite lineages—embraced a chivalric ideology that was fundamentally martial and violent. Chivalry helped to shape a common identity among these men based on the profession of arms and the ready use of violence against both their peers and those they perceived to be their social inferiors. This violence, often transgressive in nature, was not only crucial to asserting and defending personal, familial, and corporate honor, but was also inherently praiseworthy. In this way, Sposato highlights the sharp differences between chivalry and the more familiar civic ideology of the popolo grasso, the Florentine mercantile and banking elite who came to dominate Florence politically and economically during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. As a result, in Forged in the Shadow of Mars, Sposato challenges the traditional scholarly view of chivalry as foreign to the social and cultural landscape of Florence and contests its reputation as a civilizing force. By reexamining the connection between chivalric literature and actual practice and identity formation among historical knights and men-at-arms, he likewise provides an important corrective to assumptions about the nature of elite violence and identity in medieval Italian cities.

This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in the Shadows of a Rich and Sick Society is a chilling reality depicting the rising level of violence among teens, increased alcohol and drug abuse, and the continuous exploitation of children, which has become a widespread phenomena that has developed into a scandalous situation in our homes, schools, communities, and that all too often ends up in many grave yards. The spiral of youth problems and issues has created challenges for our schools, the police, the courts and our neighborhoods. It is my belief that solutions to most of these problems are no longer a local matter. Our government must establish a national new team philosophy and commitment to address the physical, social, economical, psychological and technological problems of our youth in our changing world. It is my belief that the social problems of teens, youth violence, and miss education will continue to become major issues for a very long time unless some immediate and drastic actions are implemented. In spite of the advancement of technology and the achievements in education, businesses, government, and faith institution, there is no single source within our societies that is more important that is in danger than the foundation of family The day break of a new culture is at hand in which the youth culture must be taken very seriously. It is time for a cultural make over. Our civilize society can no longer wait for an early afternoon break. In a rich republic like ours, we can no longer side step our civic responsibilities of knowing that the foundation of the family is in danger. The new day is now. Tomorrow is not promised. Our civilized society can no longer wait for an early afternoon. Immediate action is need to address the black sheep attitude of this nation. Our young people are restless. They have been awakened to the misgivings of their adult counterparts. Do as I say, but not as 1 do. There is a silent revolution taking place in our youth culture of internet forums to challenge our institutions, may be for good or for evil actions. However, soon they will be no more silent in the outcome. The youth population must be taken very serious concerning their aggressive disobedience to parents, their uncaring attitudes towards their peers and civic disorder to institutions Government, both state and local jurisdictions, will need to reassert their methods in developing regional strategies and collective programs that at times will call for a national approach for an effective comprehensive solution to counteract the silent psychopathic nature that are taking hold of our society. It is quite evident from my experience of working in schools, the community and the correctional institutions that violent behavior by youth is very serious and extreme and must be corrected immediately. In times like these, someone must be able to speak about the wrongs of government without fear and limitations. The voice of the sick, lame and the poor must be represented in all chambers of society. As we look around to the greed and corruptions, the crimes, the abuse and violence we can see a decaying state of affairs crashing down with shattering forces ready to destroy the family and our learning institutions. Needless to say, most families are not equipped to keep pace with increasing technological changes that are taking place. The level of advertisement and marketing techniques have cast a double shadow in which the haves are joining the haves and the have nots. Living in the shadows of a rich and sick society is an attempt to look at the five major institutions of civilization with a spiritual vision of hope and institutional reconciliation. A vision where the institutions of the family/home, schools, places of worship, commerce and government win dream new dreams for equitable action and just resources and services, to reverse then ever ending spiral of unrest if we fail to addressing the needs of our future generation. Today, God is can

Book excerpt: God’s solution to America’s economic crisis Saving America’s economy is not a conservative-versus-liberal issue, it is a biblical issue. National leaders have failed to pull the country out of its financial tailspin because both major parties are working from the wrong text. For a nation to achieve stability and enjoy lasting economic health, it needs to adopt the economic principles set forth in the Bible. Godonomics uncovers the core teachings from God’s Word that offer the only workable solution to our nation’s economic back-slide. Biblical principles uphold the superiority of free-market capitalism, which produced history’s highest standard of living and established the United States as an unrivaled superpower. But forces are at work today, even in the church, that seek to enslave our nation in a socialistic system. Now you can speak out—using God’s Word—against false teachings that endanger your livelihood and the future of America. Let Godonomics show you God’s requirements for financial success—in your own life and in the affairs of our nation. By following Scripture’s economic principles, you can ensure your family’s financial wellbeing even if America falls into a deepening crisis. And if we act together, it is not too late to reverse the decline. “Godonomics is a thoughtful critique of the theories that control the world of commerce and shape the lives of men and nations. Chad Hovind challenges us to reassess doing business as usual.” —Dr. Peter A. Lillback, president of Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia “Chad Hovind offers a creative and compelling case for the constitutional framework for government. He also provides practical fi nancial principles that will help you make wise decisions with your money.” —Shane F. Krauser, author of Your Nation to Save, director of the American Academy for Constitutional Education “Godonomics is an incredible comparison of biblical economics and the culture. A real eye-opener.” —Josh D. McDowell, popular speaker, coauthor of Undaunted and The Unshakable Truth “Chad Hovind brings a reasonable voice to the convinced and the unconvinced. Godonomics applies God’s wisdom on economics both to individuals and nations. You will learn about the Bible’s prescription to secure our nation’s future economic health.” —David Barton, founder and president of WallBuilders “Using God’s Word regarding financial principles, you can now be bold in speaking out against false teachings. Your entire family will learn from this important book.” —Mark Whitacre, PhD, president of operations and COO of Cypress Systems Inc.
