Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy's Lost Greece is the untold story of the modern engagement with the ancient Greek settlements of South Italy--an area known since antiquity as Magna Graecia. This "Greater Greece," at once Greek and Italian, has continuously been perceived as a region in decline since its archaic golden age, and has long been relegated to the margins of classical studies. Giovanna Ceserani's evocative and nuanced analysis recovers its significance within the history of classical archaeology. It was here that the Renaissance first encountered an ancient Greek landscape, and during the "Hellenic turn" of eighteenth-century Europe the temples of Paestum and the painted vases of South Italy played major roles, but since then, Magna Graecia--lying outside the national boundaries of modern Greece, and sharing in the complicated regional dynamic of the Italian Mezzogiorno--has fitted awkwardly into the commonly accepted paradigms of Hellenism. The unfolding of this process provides a unique insight into three developments: the humanist investment in the ancient past, the evolution of modern Hellenism, and the making of classical archaeology. Drawing on antiquarian and archaeological writings, histories and travelogues about Magna Graecia, and recent rewritings of the history and imagining of the South, Italy's Lost Greece sheds new light on well known figures in the history of archaeology while recovering forgotten ones. This is an Italian story of European resonance, which transforms our understanding of the transition from antiquarianism to archaeology, of the relationship between nation-making and institution-building in the study of the ancient past, and of the reconstruction of classical Greece in the modern world.

Book excerpt: First published in 1931, this book by archaeologist David Randall-MacIver provides a detailed description of Greek architectural sites in southern Italy and Sicily, together with narratives on the cities where the sites are found, including their mythologies and most famous citizens, visitors and political figures. “MY IDEA in writing this book has been to supply a need which others must have felt besides myself. The scholarly visitor to Lower Italy and Sicily has up till now been obliged to take his choice between travelling with a large, though always inadequate, library and travelling with nothing more than a Baedeker. There existed no single volume in which he could find all those details of topography and local archaeology which are the first interest of any man who retains a love for classical literature and a feeling for the romance of Greek history.”—Preface

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italo-Greek Coins of Southern Italy One of the great advantages offered by the study of this series of Italian coins is the attainment of a clear perception ofthe relation ship of the Roman coinage to that of ancient Greece. Many students of Roman coins neglect the literature connected With Greek coinage and thus miss the pleasure of tracing the steps by which the Roman coinage was evolved from that of the more ancient and artistic civilization of Greece. In this somewhat neglected corner of the numismatic field the student will not only find problems Still unsolved but also many side lights which help to make more clear a somewhat dark and difficult page of history. To students and collectors whose means are limited this series offers the further advantage of a large number of coins which cost little money, and are easily obtained moreover it is in connection with the types of the common coins that some of these interesting problems arise. And the relation between the Greek and Roman series may best be illustrated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
