Book Synopsis Globalizing Central Asia by : Marlene Laruelle
Download or read book Globalizing Central Asia written by Marlene Laruelle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this global era, Central Asia must be understood in both geo-economic and geopolitical terms. The region's natural resources compel the attention of rivalrous great powers and ambitious internal factions. The local regimes are caught between the need for international collaborations to valorize these riches and the need to maintain control over them in the interest of state sovereignty. Russia and China dominate the horizon, with other global players close behind; meanwhile, neighboring countries are fractious and unstable with real potential for contagion. This pathbreaking introduction to Central Asia in contemporary international economic and political context answers the needs of both academic and professional audiences and is suitable for course adoption.

Book Synopsis The Greening of London, 1920–2000 by : Matti O. Hannikainen
Download or read book The Greening of London, 1920–2000 written by Matti O. Hannikainen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-term development of public green spaces such as parks, public gardens, and recreation grounds in London during the twentieth century is a curiously neglected subject, despite the fact that various kinds of green spaces cover huge areas in cities in the UK today. This book explores how and why public green spaces have been created and used in London, and what actors have been involved in their evolution, during the course of the twentieth century. Building on case studies of the contemporary boroughs of Camden and Southwark and making use of a wealth of archival material, the author takes us through the planning and creation stages, to the intended (and actual) uses and ongoing management of the spaces. By highlighting the rise and fall of municipal authorities and the impact of neo-liberalism after the 1970s, the book also deepens our understanding of how London has been governed, planned and ruled during the twentieth century. It makes a crucial contribution to academic as well as political discourse on the history and present role of green space in sustainable cities.

Book Synopsis Critical Perspectives in Rural Development Studies by : Saturnino M. Borras Jr.
Download or read book Critical Perspectives in Rural Development Studies written by Saturnino M. Borras Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agrarian transformations within and across countries have been significantly and dynamically altered during the past few decades compared to previous eras, provoking a variety of reactions from rural poor communities worldwide. The recent convergence of various crises – financial, food, energy and environmental – has put the nexus between ‘rural development’ and ‘development in general’ back onto the center stage of theoretical, policy and political agendas in the world today. Confronting these issues will require (re)engaging with critical theories, taking politics seriously, and utilizing rigorous and appropriate research methodologies. These are the common messages and implications of the various contributions to this collection in the context of a scholarship that is critical in two senses: questioning prescriptions from mainstream perspectives and interrogating popular conventions in radical thinking. This book focuses on key perspectives, frameworks and methodologies in agrarian change and peasant studies. The contributors are leading scholars in the field of rural development studies: Henry Bernstein, Terence J. Byres, Saturnino M. Borras Jr, Marc Edelman, Cristóbal Kay, Benedict Kerkvliet, Philip McMichael, Shahra Razavi, Ian Scoones and Teodor Shanin. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Peasant Studies.

Book Synopsis Economic Policies of the New Thinking in Economics by : Philip Arestis
Download or read book Economic Policies of the New Thinking in Economics written by Philip Arestis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis and the ‘great recession’ have generated the need for new thinking in economics and for new economic policies to secure sustainable and equitable economic development. The new thinking in economics is an interdisciplinary approach to economic problems that acknowledges and respects insights and analyses from other disciplines, and recognizes complexity and evolutionary theory as relevant for understanding economic systems and economic behaviour. New Economics is concerned with institutional behaviour, expectations and uncertainty as opposed to traditional economics with its emphasis on equilibrium, mathematical formalism and deterministic solutions. With the financial crisis brought on by the unrestrained pursuit of personal and corporate profit, sanctioned by traditional economics, this is an opportune moment to establish a new way of approaching economic understanding based on new economic theory. It is also a good time to instigate new ideas on the approach to economic policy across a wide range of areas, such as macroeconomic and global governance, employment and unemployment, social security and pensions. This book is devoted to developing economic policies from the new thinking. It was originally published as a special issue of the International Review of Applied Economics.
Book Synopsis African Economic Development by : Christopher Cramer
Download or read book African Economic Development written by Christopher Cramer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book challenges conventional wisdoms about economic performance and possible policies for economic development in African countries. Its starting point is the striking variation in African economic performance. Unevenness and inequalities form a central fact of African economic experiences. The authors highlight not only differences between countries, but also variations within countries, differences often organized around distinctions of gender, class, and ethnic identity. For example, neo-natal mortality and school dropout have been reduced, particularly for some classes of women in some areas of Africa. Horticultural and agribusiness exports have grown far more rapidly in some countries than in others. These variations (and many others) point to opportunities for changing performance, reducing inequalities, learning from other policy experiences, and escaping the ties of structure, and the legacies of a colonial past. The book rejects teleological illusions and Eurocentric prejudice, but it does pay close attention to the results of policy in more industrialized parts of the world. Seeing the contradictions of capitalism for what they are - fundamental and enduring - may help policy officials protect themselves against the misleading idea that development can be expected to be a smooth, linear process, or that it would be were certain impediments suddenly removed. The authors criticize a wide range of orthodox and heterodox economists, especially for their cavalier attitude to evidence. Drawing on their own decades of research and policy experience, they combine careful use of available evidence from a range of African countries with political economy insights (mainly derived from Kalecki, Kaldor and Hischman) to make the policy case for specific types of public sector investment"--
