Book excerpt: "Canada's public higher education system is in trouble. The economic and social benefits of the Canadian university system are widely seen as a public good, which begs a pressing question: Why should we aspire to anything less than a great system? For that to happen, everything about the way universities currently operate, from the boardroom to the classroom, must change--but this kind of operational and public policy transformation will not be easy. Nothing Less than Great provides an expert analysis of the current state and challenges of Canada's university system, looking for positive change by reclaiming what a university is meant to offer for society and for citizens. Harvey P. Weingarten begins with the fundamental question that all students must ask about higher education: Is it worth going to university? From there, he stresses the need for transparency about what universities do and what they accomplish, addresses the importance of modernizing curriculum to emphasize skills over content, and provides recommendations for reform. Exploring how universities might--and should--change to reclaim their central purpose for Canadians, Nothing Less than Great will be of interest to anyone who cares about the future of our country and the important role universities play in determining that future."--

Outlining the six major sections of the GDT, Lynx breaks the trail into shorter, more attainable segments and thoroughly describes the terrain and condition of each. Not only are these trail segments invaluable for planning shorter trips along the GDT, Lynx's pre-trip planning advice will also prove indispensable for long-distance hikers overcoming such daunting logistical challenges as resupply, navigation and access.

Book excerpt: They expected the brave and Christian conquering heroes manufactured by the opinion-makers, rather than the combat-scarred, weary, and often embittered men who disembarked back in the Dominion. It took another decade of less-filtered information - ten years of pain and dislocation for returned veterans - before the Great War imagined by Canadian noncombatants began to resemble the war really experienced by Canadians overseas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year's edition of Canada Among Nations offers a critical overview of a number of landmarks in the last hundred years of Canadian foreign policy. The editors take a critical look at the now almost mainstream "declinist" thesis and at the continued relevance of Canada's relationships with its principal allies - the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Contributors discuss a broad range of themes, including the weight of a changing identity in the evolution of the country's foreign policy, the fate of Canadian diplomacy as a profession, the often complicated relationship between foreign and trade policies, the impact of immigration and refugee procedures on foreign policy, and the evolving understanding of development and defence as components of Canada's foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States did not enter the First World War until April 1917, Canada enlisted the moment Great Britain engaged in the conflict in August 1914. The Canadian contribution was great, as more than 600,000 men and women served in the war effort--400,000 of them overseas--out of a population of 8 million. More than 150,000 were wounded and nearly 67,000 gave their lives. The war was a pivotal turning point in the history of the modern world, and its mindless slaughter shattered a generation and destroyed seemingly secure values. The literature that the First World War generated, and continues to generate so many years later, is enormous and addresses a multitude of cultural and social matters in the history of Canada and the war itself. Although many scholars have brilliantly analyzed the literature of the war, little has been done to catalog the writings of ordinary participants: men and women who served in the war and wrote about it but are not included among well-known poets, novelists, and memoirists. Indeed, we don't even know how many titles these people published, nor do we know how many more titles were added later by relatives who considered the recollections or collected letters worthy of publication. Brian Douglas Tennyson's The Canadian Experience of the Great War: A Guide to Memoirs is the first attempt to identify all of the published accounts of First World War experiences by Canadian veterans.

Book excerpt: One Canada is a vision of creating a strong and united Canada, out of the dysfunctional federation of 10 provinces and three territories, leading to the greatest country on Earth. Canada was created to be a strong country, nurturing the regions, eventually becoming greater than its parts. As Canada grew from infancy, the provinces, the aunts and uncles of Confederation, also grew and aspired to become independent countries on their own. Since the Centennial in 1967, the young Canada grew, exerting the rights given to it by the Constitution. The aunts and uncles, having designs of nationhood, began resenting the young adult, forcing it to gradually ceding its control and now is a nearly impotent custodian of Canadian citizenship, and almost equal to the aunts and uncles in stature. The Canadian Federation has devolved into a state of feudalism, where "passing the buck" is the common denominator between the federal and provincial governments. Municipal governments blame the provincial for their ills; the provinces then blame the federal government with the buck passing in a vicious circle. Inside the vicious circle are the people of Canada bound in red tape while being taxed to death to pay for the ineffectiveness of governments. With each provincial government determined to create its own kingdom within Canada, One Canada will never be a reality, unless a new paradigm of governance is developed for all of Canada. The new paradigm is governance at the local municipal level, supervised by the national government. The Fathers of Confederation clearly defined the powers and responsibilities of the federal Parliament and the provincial legislatures. Had the clear division of powers been followed, Canada would, today, be greater than the sum of its regions. For the first 100 years of Confederation, the provincial governments, like aunts and uncles, helped nurture Canada through the adolescent years and into nationhood. Like the Jamaican Proverb, "Two bull caan reign in a the same pen"*, the 10 provincial and one federal government have been locking horns together. Now the time has come for the provinces to remove their blinders, let Canada grow into maturity, bringing greater prosperity to its people. * (Two bull caan reign in a the same pen) Jamaican patois (Two Bulls cannot reign in a herd) English (There can only be one leader) The Meaning.

Book excerpt: This edition of Canada Among Nations over the last year and projects forward into the year 2022. 2021 was a year of challenges for Canada and a watershed in its engagement with the global political economy. Beset by a pandemic, hemmed-in by an America-first administration in Washington and punitive recrimination from a Chinese government with global ambitions, the shrinking horizons of a foreign economic policy premised on liberal internationalism and multilateral institutionalism have sapped Canada’s global ambitions.

Book excerpt: Ottawa Book Award 2015 — Shortlisted Between 1918 and 1921 a great storm blew through Canada and raised the expectations of a new world in which all things would be possible.| The years after World War I were among the most tumultuous in Canadian history: a period of unremitting change, drama, and conflict. They were, in the words of Stephen Leacock, “a time such as there never was before.” The war had been a great crusade, promising a world made new. But it had cost Canada sixty thousand dead and many more wounded, and it had widened the many fault lines in a young, diverse country. In a nation struggling to define itself and its place in the world, labour, farmers, businessmen, churches, social reformers, and minorities had extravagant hopes, irrational fears, and contradictory demands. What had this sacrifice achieved? Whose hopes would be realized and whose dreams would end in disillusionment? Which changes would prove permanent and which would be transitory? A Time Such As There Never Was Before describes how this exciting period laid the foundation of the Canada we know today.
