Book Synopsis El Conservador by : George H. Rodriguez
Download or read book El Conservador written by George H. Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George H. Rodriguez has dedicated his life to sharing conservative values with fellow Hispanics and all Americans. As a Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush appointee, he worked with the Department of Justice in community relations and immigration outreach, going on to work with the White House and on President Bush's 1988 presidential campaign. In recent years, Rodriguez has served with the GOP and was one of the first Hispanics to be president of a major Tea Party group. Now in El Conservador: Conservative Opinions, George H. Rodriguez shares a hard-hitting collection of his political essays and commentaries. As a nationally known blogger and political commenter, George Rodriguez is a constitutional conservative Texan of Mexican descent, also known as a Tejano. His essays reflect his belief in personal freedom, and they support the idea that all Texans and Americans should live life as they wish, as long as it does not harm others or infringe on another person's rights. With a commitment to conservative values--and in some cases with a little bit of a chile picoso attitude--Rodriguez focuses on critical political topics that all Americans should be informed about: from the basics of constitutional government, personal property ownership, and states' rights to contemporary issues like the debt, immigration, and so-called diversity. Because liberal misinformation and a growing government can be dangerous to the freedom and liberty of citizens, Rodriguez believes it is important to remember why America is the greatest nation on earth and protect its God-given destiny.

Download or read book Guibert written by Jonathan Abel and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there was one man, other than Napoleon himself, who determined the course of the Napoleonic Wars, it was Jacques-Antoine-Hippolyte, comte de Guibert, the foremost military theorist in France from 1770 to his death in 1790. Taking in the full scope of the times, from the ideas of the Enlightenment to the passions of the French Revolution, Jonathan Abel’s Guibert is the first book in English to tell the remarkable story of the man who, through his pen and political activity, truly earned the title of Father of the Grande Armée. In his Essai général de tactique, published in 1771, Guibert set forth the definitive institutional doctrine for the French army of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. But unlike many other martial theorists, Guibert, who served in the French Ministry of War from 1775 to 1777 and again from 1787 to 1789, was able to put his ideas into practice. Drawing on a wealth of primary source documents—including Guibert’s own papers and the letters and memoirs of his friends and associates—Jonathan Abel re-creates the temper of an era of great turbulence and remarkable creativity. More than a military theorist, Guibert was very much a man of his day; he attended salons, wrote poetry and plays, and was inducted into the Académie française. A fiery figure, he rose and fell from power, lived and loved fiercely, and died swearing that he would “find justice.” In Abel’s account, Guibert does at last receive a measure of justice: a thorough, painstakingly documented picture of this complex man in the thick of extraordinary times, building the foundation for Napoleon's success between 1796 and 1807—and in significant ways, changing the course of European history.

Book Synopsis Walcheren 1809 by : Martin R. Howard
Download or read book Walcheren 1809 written by Martin R. Howard and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1809, with the Dutch coast a pistol held at the head of England, the largest British expeditionary force ever assembled, over 40,000 men and around 600 ships, weighed anchor off the Kent coast and sailed for the island of Walcheren in the Scheldt estuary. After an initial success, the expedition stalled and as the lethargic military commander, Lord Chatham, was at loggerheads with the opinionated senior naval commander, Sir Richard Strachan, troops were dying of a mysterious disease termed Walcheren fever. Almost all the campaigns 4,000 dead were victims of disease. The Scheldt was evacuated and the return home was followed by a scandalous Parliamentary Inquiry. Walcheren fever cast an even longer shadow. Six months later 11,000 men were still registered sick. In 1812, Wellington complained that the constitution of his troops was much shaken with Walcheren.

Book Synopsis Wellington's Hidden Heroes by : Veronica Baker-Smith
Download or read book Wellington's Hidden Heroes written by Veronica Baker-Smith and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An excellent account of the contribution of the newly formed (and short-lived) United Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Allied victory” (HistoryOfWar.org). The Dutch-Belgians have been variously described as inexperienced, incompetent, and cowardly, a rogue element in the otherwise disciplined Allied Army. It is only now being tentatively acknowledged that they alone saved Wellington from disaster at Quatre Bras. He had committed a strategic error in that, as Napoleon advanced, his own troops were scattered over a hundred kilometers of southern Belgium. Outnumbered three to one, the Netherlanders gave him time to concentrate his forces and save Brussels from French occupation. At Waterloo itself, on at least three occasions when the fate of the battle “hung upon the cusp,” their engagement with the enemy aided British recovery. Their commander—the Prince of Orange—has been viciously described as an arrogant fool, “a disaster waiting to happen,” and even a dangerous lunatic. According to the assessment of Wellington himself, he was a reliable and courageous subordinate. This book reveals a new dimension of the famous campaign and includes many unseen illustrations. For the first time, a full assessment is made of the challenge which Willem I faced as king of a country hastily cobbled together by the Congress of Vienna, and of his achievement in assembling, equipping, and training 30,000 men from scratch in eighteen months. “An extraordinary and impressively researched, written, organized and presented history that sheds considerable new light on one of the most influential battles of 19th century Europe.” —Midwest Book Review “A fascinating read.” —Military Heritage

Book Synopsis Marshal Ney - Bravest Of The Brave by : Andrew Hilliard Atteridge
Download or read book Marshal Ney - Bravest Of The Brave written by Andrew Hilliard Atteridge and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few of Napoleon’s Marshals have been involved in such controversy as the son of a cooper from Sarrelouis, Michel Ney. His reputation has been argued over fiercely by military historians, Bonapartists, revisionists and romantics for almost two centuries since his untimely demise at the hands of his own countrymen in the gardens of the Luxembourg. This volume paints a sympathetic picture of Marshal Ney, drawing on the memoirs of his subordinates and Général Bonnal’s Vie Militaire du Maréchal Ney to combine into the best single volume biography yet published in English. Atteridge writes concisely but vividly, and does not shy away with the controversies that have dogged Ney’s reputation, whilst providing a clear framework of the events. The details are accompanied by numerous maps, including excellent details on the often overlooked Battle of Hohenlinden in 1800 which secured the French Republic. From the early days of the French Republic, Ney fought fiercely and with much skill, through to the dark days of the retreat from Russia in 1812 in which he saved the remnants of the vast army Napoleon led to their destruction. His actions in the Hundred Days, for which he lost his life in a trial whose outcome was predetermined, are analyzed clearly and he deserved a better lot than he received for his efforts. Ney was a pivotal figure in an era of giants and Atteridge’s book does him the justice his brave and valorous character demands. Highly recommended. Atteridge’s book forms a companion to his other single volume biography of Marshal Murat and his work on the varied personalities on Napoleon’s Brothers. Author- Andrew Hilliard Atteridge (1844–1912) Linked TOC and 8 Illustrations and 8 maps.
