Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Hymns of the Middle Ages Was within them, it was quite as certainly a reality toward which they strove diligently, for which they longed greatly, and in which they implicitly believed. This may explain the essentially impersonal atti tude even in the later, strongly emotional poetry of which The Jubilee Rhythm of Bernard of Clairvaux is an example. Even in this the personal element is quite lost in the description of the visions vouchsafed to the blessed. It is a quality seem ingly at variance with adher ence to a system in which the saving of one's own soul is thefirst care, yet no analysis of self turns these writers from their celestial themes. There is no place in their minds for ih dividual moods, such as color some modern devotional verse and make religion appear a salve for the disappointed rather than an inspiration for the hero. The thoughts of the mediaeval hymn-writers were fixed on the facts of their belief and on the theories of their theology, and life itself was in those days too precari ous to leave room for fine questionings as to its lesser incidents of pleasure or of pain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations of Latin Hymns of the Middle Ages The following Latin Hymns, selected from the collection published by Dr. March of Lafayette College, undoubtedly possess more than ordinary merit. To have rendered all the Hymns would have unduly swelled the work. The selections have been made so as to present as many authors as could conveniently be embraced within its compass. It will be highly gratifying to me if the translations shall adequately convey the meaning of the originals. I cannot hope to have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Hymns: Translations of the Verses of the Most Notable Latin Writers of the Early and Middle Ages Immediately upon the appearance of that poem in print, the author was urged by scholarly friends, both clerical and lay, lovers, like himself, of the fine old church songs, to try his hand at others, especially those used for liturgical purposes and found in the Breviary and Missal. The more of these translations that appeared, the more popular they seemed to become. The very act of translating afforded a singular pleas ure and exhilaration of spirit. In a short time the number of English renderings on the author's hands became so great, and the requests of friends to collect them in a volume, so urgent, that the present work is the result. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Great Hymns Character as to deserve rank as the great hymns of universal literature. In this sea son of Lent - a season which is each year more widely observed by those who pro fess and call themselves Christians - a pre sensation of the greatest of the hymns of the Christian Church is appropriate. This not only for their religious significance, but because of their literary value; an attribute too often lost sight of by the general reader, who does not appreciate the fact that a knowledge of the masterpieces of hymno graphy is as essential to a broad literary education as a knowledge of the master pieces of short-story composition. Were we obliged to search the treasures of the various hymnodies, the task of selecting the seven great hymns - one for each Wednes day in Lent - would be appalling, and years might well be occupied in the task; but, fortunately, the responsibility of selection and the labor of appraisement has been. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Ages: For Public and Social Worship In the preparation of the Hymns of the Ages, the Editor has expend ed a vast amount of time and labor, and has attempted to gather the best hymns and tunes both of Europe and America. The cost of copyrights has been very great. He wishes to return thanks to those composers who have kindly allowed him to use their pieces gratis; and to a large number of European composers whose addresses it has been impossible to secure. He is under lasting obligation to the accomplished musician Prof. N. Bowditch Clapp, for his revision of the musical part of the work; and, for their help in the selection of hymns and tunes, to Rev. M. D. Hoge, D. D., Rev. W. A. Campbell, D. D., Rev. T. D. Witherspoon, D. D., Rev. W. S. Lacy D. D., and Rev. J. P. Smith D. D. These distinguished divines have afforded invaluable assistance by giving the benefit of their experience and taste in the preparation of the work. A large chorus choir, trained to sing rapidly, and with spirit, is the best inspiration for congregational singing. After the introduction of a new book, there should also be meetings held on some evening during the week for congregational practice that the people may learn new tunes.
