Book excerpt: The pictures that made history as they traveled around the world on their only exhibition tour: more than a hundred masterpieces of modern French painting from one of the world's fabled repositories of great art—The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania—are here published in trade paperback for the first time. These paintings are the crowning glory of the extraordinary collection assembled in the early twentieth century by Dr. Albert C. Barnes, the bold and original collector who established the Foundation in 1922 as a school for the study of art and philosophy. Now, after six decades of limited access to visitors and a ban on color reproduction, the Barnes Foundation welcomes a wider audience both on its premises and through the publication of this magnificent volume, containing the most eagerly awaited set of reproductions in art-book history. Manet, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rousseau, Soutine, La Fresnaye, Modigliani, Picasso, Braque, and Matisse—the list of artists gives only a hint of the splendors this book contains. Here are major landmarks of modern art, including twenty-four Renoirs encompassing the entire span of his career . . . thirty monumental Cézannes, including bather groups, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits . . . Matisse's pivotal Bonheur de vivre, Three Sisters Triptych, and world-famous Dance mural (and eighteen other paintings and oil studies) . . . the finest of van Gogh's six paintings of Joseph-Etienne Roulin . . . Seurat's celebrated Models . . . The Douanier Rousseau's strange, unsettling Unpleasant Surprise . . . the tender portrait of young M. Loulou by Gauguin . . . a spectacular cluster of seven early Picassos. And this is only a sampling of the exhilarating visual banquet offered in these pages. To describe the paintings and relate the achievements of Dr. Barnes as a collector and educator, commentaries and essays have been provided by a dozen notable American and French art historians and curators. Together they provide the historical and aesthetic setting for these glowing jewels of modern art. For everyone to whom the paintings in the Barnes Foundation have been a legend—unattainable—and for every devotee of great art and beautiful books, this volume will be a joy and a treasure. With 320 illustrations, 151 in full color, and 18 pages of gatefolds.

Book Synopsis Extremities by : Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby
Download or read book Extremities written by Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following the French Revolution, four artists - Girodet, Gros, Gericault, and Delacroix - painted works in their Parisian studios that vividly expressed violent events in faraway, colonial lands. This book examines six of these paintings and argues that their disturbing, erotic depictions of slavery, revolt, plague, decapitation, cannibalism, massacre, and abduction chart the history of France's empire and colonial politics. Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby shows that these paintings about occurrences in the West Indies, Syria, Egypt, Senegal, and Ottoman Empire Greece are preoccupied not with mastery and control but with loss, degradation, and failure, and she explains how such representations of crises in the colonies were able to answer the artists' longings as well as the needs of the government and the opposition parties at home. Empire made painters devoted to the representation of liberty and the new French nation confront liberty's antithesis: slavery. It also forced them to contend with cultural and racial difference. Young male artists responded, says Grigsby, by translating distant crises into images of challenges to the self, making history painting the site where geographic extremities and bodily extremities articulated one another.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great French Painters: And the Evolution of French Painting From 1830 to the Present Day Ome explanation will be necessary to justify the composition of this book. Its programme is vast; it is to compress into a rapid sketch seventy years that have given to the French School some of its greatest masters and an imposing number of artists of high merit. In what spirit, in what order are we to consider them? This, for the sake of clearness, had better be defined at the outset. CHAPTER III THE REALISTS AND THE CHARACTERISTS The realist ideas derived from the influence of Delacroix.--Gust iw Courbst anJ the movement of protest against the ideas of Ingres and the School.--Edouard Manet and the transformation of realism into the investigation of modern character.--The idea of the beauty of expression begins to oppose that of the beaulv of form.--Manet's influence creates the style of modern illustration, after Daumier, Gavarni and Guys.--Degas and characterism.--Raffaelli, Forain.--Bastien-Lepage and minute realism.--The modern painters: Roll, Ribot, Lautrec, etc. OU take the lead in the decrepitude of your art," wrote Baude laire to Manet. This decrepitude the great poet applied to the academic style of Ingres's pupils, while they in turn applied it to the romantic and realistic daring of Delacroix's pupils. Ingres and Delacroix, reconciled to-day in our admiration, were then the protagonists of that old and eternal struggle between the ancient and the modern, the adherents of Gluck and of Piccini. The genius of the one was used as a pretext for denying that of the other, with all the injustice inherent in periods of feverish artistic activity. However, one of the first consequences of Delacroix was the establishment, together with romanticism, of a recrudescence of realism. A historical and orientalist painter, a painter of modern tragedy, Delacroix was also, quite apart from his gifts as decorator and lyricist, an intense realist, and, like all the greatest artists, gave expression to the heroism and the dramatic side of broad, but scrupulous observation of truth. While certain painters cling to his romanticism and to his composition, others cling particularly to his bold qualities of truthfulness, and...

The fellow artist and Riviera resident Paul Rafferty has tracked down many of the locations Churchill used in Provence, an area the great man so aptly called 'paintatious'. Many of these locations are newly discovered and his 'fearless impressions' stand alongside to illustrate how Churchill captured them on canvas.
