Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n the aftermath of the financial crisis, why has the reform process been incremental yet the conditions for more rapid and abrupt transformations appeared to be available? Is there anything specific about financial policy that prevents more radical reforms? Drawing from Comparative Politics and Historical Institutionalism in particular, as well as International Political Economy, this book answers these questions by examining the particular institutional frictions that characterise global financial governance and influence the activity of change agents and veto players involved in the process of global regulatory change. The chapters in this volume collectively demonstrate that the process of change in financial rule-making as well as in the institutions governing finance does not fit with the punctuated model of policy change. The book also shows, however, that incremental changes can lead to fundamental shifts in the basic principles that inform global financial governance.

Download or read book Strings Attached written by Joanne Lipman and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FINE ART OF TOUGH LOVE. If you're lucky, somewhere in your past is that one person who changed your life forever. The one who pushed you to dream bigger and to reach higher, and who set you straight on what matters in life. Perhaps it was a coach, or a professor, or a family friend. For Joanne Lipman and Melanie Kupchynsky, that person was a public-school music teacher, Jerry Kupchynsky, known as Mr. K--a Ukrainian-born taskmaster who yelled and stomped and screamed, and who drove his students harder than anyone had ever driven them before. Through sheer force of will, he made them better than they had any right to be. Strings Attached tells the inspiring, poignant, and powerful story of this remarkable man, whose life seemed to conspire against him at every turn and yet who was able to transform his own heartache into triumph for his students. Lyrically recounted by two former students -- acclaimed journalist Joanne Lipman and Mr. K's daughter, Chicago Symphony Orchestra violinist Melanie Kupchynsky -- Strings Attached takes you on a journey that spans from his days as a forced Nazi laborer and his later home life as a husband to an invalid wife, to his heart-breaking search for his missing daughter, Melanie's sister. This is an unforgettable tale -- a captivating narrative that is as absorbing as fiction -- about the power of a great teacher, but also about the legacy that remains long after the last note has faded into silence: lessons in resilience, excellence, and tough love. Strings Attached is for anyone indebted to a mentor and for those devoted to igniting excellence in others.
Book Synopsis Human Resources Development Review 2008 by : Andre Kraak
Download or read book Human Resources Development Review 2008 written by Andre Kraak and published by HSRC Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through 25 chapters authored by some of the leading researchers in the field, the Human Resources Development Review 2008 provides an extensive overview of the contextual factors driving human resources development in South Africa. A key theme throughout the volume is the importance of a multi-faceted skills development strategy operating at three levels. The first entails high-skills policies aimed at expanding export-oriented manufacturing production and services provision, particularly in new globally competitive 'niche' areas. The second relates to the economy's ongoing need for intermediate skills, as is evident in the shortage of skilled artisans and technologists. Finally, the provision of basic, entry-level skills is important in view of the urgent need for large-scale job creation schemes, triggered by public sector initiatives, to ameliorate high levels of unemployment and despondency, especially amongst the youth.

But how much do we understand about time, and is it possible to retrain our brains and improve our relationship with it? Drawing on the latest research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and biology, and using original research on the way memory shapes our understanding of time, acclaimed writer and broadcaster Claudia Hammond delves into the mysteries of time perception. Along the way, she introduces us to an extraordinary array of colourful characters willing to go to great lengths in the interests of research, such as the French speleologist Michel, who spends two months in an ice cave in complete darkness. Time Warped shows us how to manage our time more efficiently, speed time up and slow it down at will, plan for the future with more accuracy, and, ultimately, use the warping of time to our own advantage.

Book Synopsis Reshaping High School English by : Bruce Pirie
Download or read book Reshaping High School English written by Bruce Pirie and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes up the question of what shape high school English studies should take in the coming years. It describes an English program that blends philosophical depth with classroom practicality. Drawing examples from commonly taught texts such as "Macbeth,""To Kill a Mockingbird," and "Lord of the Flies," the book places literary analysis within a postmodern framework. It explores recent literary and educational theory--including reader response theory and cultural studies. The book devotes attention to the process of reading and its relationship to creative writing, which is put forward as an essential rather than a supplementary part of high school English programs. The end result is that the book provides insights on textuality, media studies, drama, and the 5-paragraph essay. The book also serves as a call for increased teacher involvement in curriculum reform. While the book's primary purpose is to examine what does and does not make sense in high school English teaching in view of current theory, it offers readers examples of effective classroom practice that takes English in the right direction. Book Synopsis Transforming Schools by : Bernard Barker
Download or read book Transforming Schools written by Bernard Barker and published by Trentham Books Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intriguing book challenges the usual idea of how a weak or failing school can be turned into a successful one by the simple introduction of effective leadership and management. Bernard Barker describes the journey of a struggling British Midlands comprehensive through special measures. As a participant researcher in the process, the author relates how government inspectors impose a conventional regime, based on improved leadership, to drag the institution from the mire. But he shows that schools, heads, teachers, and pupils are infinitely diverse and have an infinite range of motivations, priorities, and personalities. Based on his experience, he argues that imposing strict government-inspired improvement models cannot solve all the problems of an institution that is defined not only by its leaders and teachers but also by the complexities of its organizational context and social geography. Challenging conventional wisdom, the book argues that although a school can quickly be made to show the 11 key effectiveness characteristics, this does not always lead to an improvement in the prescribed indicator for success--exam results. The book develops an alternative conception of how leaders improve their schools. This in-depth and analytical yet thoroughly human account of a school's struggle away from the stigma of special measures is a must-read for all involved in education, from policymakers and officials to local authorities, researchers, leader-watchers, heads, teachers, governors, and parents.

Book excerpt: The problems of fragile statehood and poor government performance rank high on the international agenda for action. In many affected countries, the population receives not even the most basic of social services and human rights are violated in many ways. The government is generally unable to perform its core duties. The capacities required are not in place or there is no genuine political will to undertake the necessary reforms. The consequences of poor governance hit poor and disadvantaged sections of the population disproportionately hard. The United Nations sees these states as the single most serious risk to peace and security at global and regional level. The OECD states and international organizations have undertaken to step up their commitment in fragile states. Now the international community faces the major challenge of helping to shape transition processes by means of suitable development strategies and instruments. In this compilation, experts express their views on this iss
