Book Synopsis Rome's Great Eastern War by : Gareth C. Sampson
Download or read book Rome's Great Eastern War written by Gareth C. Sampson and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military history of Ancient Rome analyses the empire’s revitalized push against rising enemies to the East. In the century since Rome’s defeat of the Seleucid Empire in the 180s BC, the East was dominated by the rise of new empires: Parthia, Armenia, and Pontus, each vying to recreate the glories of the Persian Empire. By the 80s BC, the Pontic Empire of Mithridates had grown so bold that it invaded and annexed the whole of Rome’s eastern empire and occupied Greece itself. But as Rome emerged from the devastating effects of the First Civil War, a new breed of general emerged with it, eager to re-assert Roman military dominance and carve out a fresh empire in the east. In Rome’s Great Eastern War, Gareth C. Sampson analyses the military campaigns and battles between a revitalized Rome and the various powers of the eastern Mediterranean hinterland. He demonstrates how this series of conflicts ultimately heralded a new phase in Roman imperial expansion and reshaped the ancient East.
Book Synopsis The Great Eastern Railway, The Late 19th and Early 20th Century, 1862–1924 by : Charles Phillips
Download or read book The Great Eastern Railway, The Late 19th and Early 20th Century, 1862–1924 written by Charles Phillips and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the history of the Great Eastern Railway from 1811 to 1924. This volume covers from 1862 when the Great Eastern Railway was formed to 1924 when with the absorption of the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway and the Mid Suffolk Light Railway into the LNER, the cessation of locomotive building at Stratford and the departure of the Company’s last General Manager, Sidney Parnwell the GER could finally be said to exist. The history covers many things including the building and the subsequent expansion of Liverpool Street station and the development of the extensive suburban system. The Company’s attempts to gain direct access to the northern coal fields which resulted in the formation of the Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Line is mentioned as is the abortive proposed working union with the Great Northern and the Great Central railways. Relations with London, Tilbury and Southend Railway including the battle for the Southend traffic from 1911 are dealt with, as is the effect of Midland Railway takeover of that Railway. How the GER dealt with the threat of electric tube railways at the turn of the 20th century receives attention as do the abortive proposals in 1918 for the electrification of the Company’s suburban services.

Download or read book The Bright Side written by Jack Riewoldt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his gritty and inspirational memoir, Jack Riewoldt reveals all about his remarkable AFL career and his personal journey of growth off the field. Jack grew up in picturesque Tasmania, playing sport with his family and admiring his older cousin Nick. When Nick was drafted in the AFL, Jack’s focus shifted to footy, and that competitive drive helped Jack become one of Richmond’s most beloved and prolific players. The Bright Side dives into every important win, including Richmond’s recent premierships, as well as the losses that helped Jack learn and build resilience. Jack’s positive attitude has helped him overcome a brush with cancer, the loss of his much-loved cousin Maddie – sister of Nick Riewoldt, with whom Jack remains a spokesman for the charity in her name – and the misunderstanding that has dogged much of his career. In The Bright Side, Jack finally corrects some of the misperceptions. From mischievous youngster to revered leader of the game, it’s family and community that has pulled Jack through, and allowed him to become an AFL legend. The book includes a foreword by Gerard Whateley.
