William needed a strong hold to overawe the citizens; and the White Tower was commenced in 1078. In 1083 St. Paul's was also begun on the site Of the Old church founded by Ethelbert in 610. The City was now swarming with Norman settlers. It suffered many calamities. In 1077 occurred such a fire as never was before since London was founded. Ten years later, another fire consumed the greatest and fairest part of the whole City. In 1090, also, a hurricane destroyed many churches and six hundred houses. London rapidly became rich and powerful. It was the support of the City that enabled Stephen to hold his own against Matilda. In 1176, London Bridge was rebuilt with stone. The Binnen-Alster is perfectly square, about a mile in circumference and surrounded on three sides by wide quays bordered with trees, handsome dwellings and magnificent hotels. The quay called the Alte-Jungfernstieg is the gayest and busiest; on its left is the N cue-Jungfernstieg and on its right is the Alsterdamm; while, directly opposite the Alte-Jungfernstieg, and separating the Binnen-Alster from the outer lake, is an embankment consisting of two parks, or promenades, connected by a bridge called the Lombardsbrilcke. A beautiful view is to be had from this bridge, looking north across the Ausser-Alster, with its rising banks, on which the villas of the wealthy with their parks and gardens are thickly sprinkled; and, looking south across the Binnen-Alster, gay with little boats and floating swans, to the city whose buildings and towers make such a pretty picture. At the end of the Old J ungfernstieg the Alster-Pavillion is situated, --a cafe that is to Hamburg what the Bratwurstgliickle is to Nuremburg and the H ofbrdw haus to Munich. On the right of the Old J ungfernstieg are the Alster Arcades, a street running parallel with the little Alster that flows in from the lake and filled with attractive shops. The Alster Arcades extend from the Reesendammbrilcke to the Schleusenbriicke, two bridges that run parallel with the Old Jungfernstieg. Such cities can belong to him only as they belong to countless others. But a smaller city, known perhaps before by name and little more, when it has been once examined in this way, becomes a kind of possession. The central French cities have special opportunities in this way. Every one has a history; few have, what so many Italian cities have, an European history; but all have a history of some kind - a history which has an interest, especially when spelled out on the spot among the monuments of the spot. Each city had its bishops; most of them had counts or other lords. And the doings of those bishops and counts are pleas ant to study, at all events under the shadow of their own churches and castles. There were municipalities also, and there is a certain satisfaction in an age of monotonous prefects and mayors, when one finds for oneself, from some epitaph or other inscription, that the magistrates of one town were consuls, those of another those of a third eapz'louls. A few days' ex amination of this kind will not of course put the tra veller on a level with the local antiquary in point of local information. But such an examination, carried on in several places, will perhaps open to the inquirer some things in each place which the local antiquary fails to see. He will actually know far less, of each place than he who has given his life to the study of that place; but he will be better able than the man who has studied one place only to compare one city with another, and to mark at a glance what is most truly characteristic of.
