Download or read book Lapsed written by Monica Dux and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing your religion is harder than it looks ... From devout ten-year-old performing the part of Jesus in a primary school play to blaspheming, undergraduate atheist, Monica Dux and her attitude to the Catholic Church changed profoundly over a decade. Eventually, she calmed down and was just 'lapsed'. Then, on a family trip to Rome, her young daughter expressed a desire to be baptised. Monica found herself re-examining her own childhood and how Catholicism had shaped her. Was it really out of her system or was it in her blood for life? In Lapsed, Monica sets out to find the answer. Her investigations lead her to test a miracle cure in Lourdes and visit the grave of a headless Saint who claimed to be married to Christ (and wore a wedding ring made of his foreskin to prove it). She speaks to canon lawyers, abuse survivors and even a nun who insists that the Virgin Mary starts her car every morning. With wry humour and razor-sharp observations, Lapsed is the story of one woman's attempt to exorcise her religious upbringing, and to answer the question, is Catholicism like a blood group and, if so, is it possible to get a total transfusion? 'Enlightening, forensic and laugh-out-loud funny' -- JANE CARO 'A frank, funny and heartfelt exorcism of our need to believe in a man in the sky' -- SHAUN MICALLEF

Book excerpt: A beloved nun and social activist offers a soul-stirring guide for all who feel disillusioned and dissatisfied with the power-hungry institutions and systems of this world “A cri de coeur against the status quo and for a bold spirituality to fight injustice.”—The New York Times In The Time Is Now, Sister Joan Chittister—a rabble-rousing force of nature for social justice and fervent proponent of personal faith and spiritual fulfillment—draws on the wisdom of prophets, both ancient and modern, to help us confront the societal forces that oppress and silence the sacred voices among us. Pairing scriptural insights with narratives of the truth-tellers that came before us, Sister Joan offers a compelling vision for readers to combat complacency and to propel ourselves toward creating a world of justice, freedom, peace, and empowerment. For the weary, the cranky, and the fearful, this energizing message invites us to participate in a vision for a world greater than the one we find ourselves in today. This is spirituality in action; this is practical and powerful activism for our times. Praise for The Time Is Now “For decades Chittister has been a prolific author and advocate for women and social justice inside and outside the realm of the Catholic Church. Here she shares her perspective on the current state of equity, social justice, and the environment and calls on all Christians to explore the traits of prophets, many of which they can find within themselves . . . offering motivation as well as ways to accomplish change.”—Booklist “A series of short essays to encourage and refresh the spirit of activists . . . applicable to both progressive and conservative Christians. Will appeal to spiritual readers seeking an encouraging book for social justice advocacy.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Download or read book Rome in Australia: The Papacy and Conflict in the Australian Catholic Missions, 1834-1884 (set 2 volumes) written by Christopher Dowd and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-07-30 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founding of the Catholic missions in Australia coincided with the defining drift of power and prestige within the nineteenth-century Church. This was a period of chronic dissension among Australia's Catholic communities, powerfully drawn by the ultramontane impulse and political manoeuvring to refer their problems to the Pope. Roman bureaucratic control, exercised through the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide, was the single most important factor in the resolution of these problems and, consequently, in the determinative shaping of the colonial Australian Church. Based on extensive archival research, this study explores issues of process, politics and personality in the formulation of papal policy towards a part of the world that could not be more distant from Rome.

Download or read book Catholic Values and Australian Realities written by James Franklin and published by Connor Court Publishing Pty Ltd. This book was released on 2006 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Catholics have made a unique contribution to the nation. At its centre is a solid grasp of the objectivity of ethics. Persons or societies cannot "choose their own values", because what is right and wrong is founded in the way things are. In his wide-ranging book on Australian Catholic thought and action, James Franklin, author of the much-praised polemical history of Australian philosophy, Corrupting the Youth, shows how core Catholic values have played out in the issues where Catholics have challenged their host society - in debates on land rights, immigration and values in schools, and in combats with Freemasons, Protestants and Communists.

Book excerpt: The Australasian Catholic Coalition for Church Reform (ACCCR) is a voice for lay Catholics and comprises a network of 19 member organisations across Australia and New Zealand. Member groups of ACCCR are committed to the Catholic faith and foster collaboration and support in seeking renewal of the Catholic Church. In response to the Assembly of the Australian Plenary Council 2020-2022, the ACCCR convened a series of convocations to promote the Plenary and support its task of renewing the Church in Australia. The online convocations featured keynote speakers who offered a path toward a vibrant synodal Church that speaks to - and meets the needs of - Catholics in this millennium. These convocations, in turn, sparked the genesis for this reading guide - A Church for All. A Church for All presents transcripts from convocation speakers - such as Joan Chittister, Robert Fitzgerald, Debra Zanella, and John Warhurst - along with a response to the Plenary agenda and concrete proposals for the Plenary Council by the ACCCR. The guide also features discussion questions that will provoke further reflection and is designed to be used either alone or with others. A Church for All features some of the most respected voices in the Australian Catholic world and is a must-read for anyone concerned about the future of the Catholic Church.

Book Synopsis Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church by : Geoffrey Robinson
Download or read book Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church written by Geoffrey Robinson and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his own experience in responding to abuse, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson methodically offers a critique of the church's use and misuse of power, from the pope proclaiming infallibly down to the preacher claiming a divine authority for every word spoken from the pulpit. Going back to the Bible and, above all, to the teaching of Jesus, he presents an approach to sexual morality that is profound, compassionate, and people-centered. He stresses the priority of the hierarchy of holiness over the hierarchy of power. He offers nothing less than a vision for a church of the third millennium 'a church that wants to see in its members the responsibility appropriate to adults rather than the obedience appropriate to children and wants to help al people to grow to become al they are capable of being. You will love or hate this book but not be ale to remain neutral. Through the story of sexual abuse and the church's response, I came to the unshakeable belief that within the Catholic Church there absolutely must be profound and enduring change. In particular, there must be change on the two subjects of power and sex. 'From the Introduction Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, who has degrees in philosophy, theology, and church law, was Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Sydney from 1984 until his retirement in 2004. In 1994, he was elected by the Australian Bishops to the National Committee for professional Standards, coordinating the response of the Catholic Church in Australia to revelations of sexual abuse, and from 1997 until 2003 he was cochairman of this committee.
