Book Synopsis Historic Gravestone Art of Charleston, South Carolina, 1695-1802 by : David R. Mould
Download or read book Historic Gravestone Art of Charleston, South Carolina, 1695-1802 written by David R. Mould and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here lyes Buried the Body of MARTHA PERONNEAU...Departed This Life December Ye 14th 1746 Aged 13 Years." Such an inscription was typical of 18th century grave markers in Charleston, South Carolina. Many epitaphs went on to reveal much more about the deceased: personality, religious beliefs, career accomplishments and social position. Attention to social matters was a natural part of life in Charleston, where descendants of the city's 17th century British founders sought to recreate the class-conscious culture of aristocratic England. The merging of this culture with influences from French Huguenots, German Lutherans, Scottish Presbyterians and Spanish Jews led to funeral practices unique in the American colonies. Focusing on pieces created between 1695 and 1802, this volume offers a detailed examination of the tombstones and grave markers from 18th century Charleston. It discusses not only the general trends and the symbolism of the period's gravestone art--such as skulls, portraits, ascending souls and stylized vegetation--but also examines specific instances of these popular motifs. Tombstones from Charleston's oldest and most significant churches, including the Circular Congregational Church, St. Philip's Anglican Church, the French Huguenot Church and the First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, are explored in detail. The work looks at how Charleston gravestones differed from funerary art elsewhere in the American colonies and reveals them to be some of the earliest examples of American sculpture. A guide to colonial gravestone symbols and a glossary of relevant Latin terms are also included.

Book Synopsis Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors by : William J. Roulston
Download or read book Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors written by William J. Roulston and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest frustrations for generations of genealogical researchers has been that reliable guidance on sources for perhaps the most critical period in the establishment of their family's links with Ulster, the period up to 1800, has proved to be so elusive. Not any more. This book can claim to be the first comprehensive guide for family historians searching for ancestors in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Ulster. Whether their ancestors are of English, Scottish, or Gaelic Irish origin, it will be of enormous value to anyone wishing to conduct research in Ulster prior to 1800. A comprehensive range of sources from the period 1600-1800 are identified and explained in very clear terms. Information on the whereabouts of these records and how they may be accessed is also provided. Equally important, there is guidance on how effectively they might be used. The appendices to the book include a full listing of pre-1800 church records for Ulster; a detailed description of nearly 250 collections of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century estate papers; and a summary breakdown of the sources available from this period for each parish in Ulster.

These online updates appear in print for the first time in this second edition, along with a further 35,000 new and revised words. These include more than 80 new entries, ranging from important performers, directors, and scholars (such as Lucy Bailey, Samuel West, and Alfredo Michel Modenessi), to topics as diverse as Shakespeare in the digital age and the ubiquity of plants in Shakespeare's works, to the interpretation of Shakespeare globally, from Finland to Iraq. To make information on Shakespeare's major works easier to find, the feature entries have been grouped and placed in a centre section (fully cross-referenced from the A-Z). The thematic listing of entries - described in the press as 'an invaluable panorama of the contents' - has been updated to include all of the new entries. Download or read book Almost Forgotten written by Joseph K. Oyler and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least 107 men from the Bridgeville and South Fayette area perished while serving our country in the military as early as the Civil War and as recently as the Vietnam War. The book documents who they were, where they lived, who their parents and siblings were, the conflict in which they served, their branch of service, when and where they perished, and where they are buried or memorialized. However, it goes beyond these details by relating anecdotes and human interest stories concerning the casualties, their friends, and their families. The author shares his memories of the men who perished, the conflicts in which they served, and his family's connection to the various conflicts. Hundreds of men and women who contributed information to the author are acknowledged. The book unveils many interesting findings. For example, Alexander Asti perished with the Five Sullivan Brothers when the Japanese sank the light cruiser USS Juneau at Guadacanal during World War 2. Most importantly, it resurrects the memory of these men who sacrificed their lives to preserve our liberty and freedom!
