Book excerpt: Predator or prey. It all depends on which end of the scope you’re on. Hunters are the boogeymen werewolf parents use to keep their children in line—that’s what Joey and Chris used to believe. Now, wolves are being massacred by an elusive predator, a flesh-and-blood killer with silver-plated weapons and a grudge. With the funeral of the century days away and several dozen agitated out-of-town shifters breathing down their necks, there’s no margin for error. Can Seattle’s young Alphas track down the bloodthirsty butcher before he slaughters them all? Grave Legacy is the staggering fourth book in the Grant Wolves series. If you like defiant heroes, high stakes, and jaw-dropping twists, you’ll love Lori Drake’s page-turning urban fantasy. Buy Grave Legacy and join the hunt today!

Book excerpt: Ain't No Grave: The Life and Legacy of Brother Claude Ely is written as an oral, biographical history taken from the recorded interviews of over 1,000 people in the Appalachian Mountains who personally knew Brother Claude Ely in various phases of his life. Brother Claude Ely, coined as the King Recording Label's "Gospel Ranger" of the Appalachian Mountains, was well-known and loved by many in the earlier part of the twentieth century as both a religious singer/songwriter and a Pentecostal-Holiness preacher. Few people, however, knew the personal details of his childhood, military service, and years of hard work in the coal fields of Southwestern Virginia. Now, decades after his legendary death, many fans still seem mesmerized and touched by this humble man's quick wit and sincere desire to share the Gospel's "Good News" with everyone who would listen to his message of hope and love. - Jacket flap.

Book excerpt: Generational dialogues between 40 world-renowned creatives exploring how the creative legacy of previous generations is being reinterpreted over time. Description What is this phenomenon we call ‘legacy’? This intangible inheritance that we eventually leave for our posterity? Is it the creative and intellectual heritage that one generation passes on to the next? Conceived by Lukas Feireiss, the book at hand tries to probe this open question by engaging in critical dialogue different generations of creatives, connectors and thinkers alike. In some cases, between inherent legacy of parent and child, in many cases between mentor and students, or simply between friends. The more than 40 illustrious contributors to this dialogue derive from an array of fields of knowledge and experience. Their stories often provide very personal insights into their work and life. They also reveal a broader perspective on the overall realms of art, design, architecture, music, literature, photography and curation in the 20th and 21st century. With contributions by Olafur Eliasson and Einar Thorsteinn, Lukas Feireiss and Ai Weiwei, Charlie and Rem Koolhaas, Francesca Gavin and Kerry James Marshall, Sophie Lovell and Dieter Rams, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Yona Friedman, Shumon Basar and Ken Adam, Carson Chan and Phyllis Lambert, Rachel and Daniel Libeskind, Andres Ramirez and Denise Scott Brown, Aric Chen and Arata Isozaki, Ahmir Questlove Thompson and George Clinton and many more.

Book excerpt: The Roman army represented an important social and organizational reference model for the Romano-Barbarian societies, which progressively replaced the Western Empire in the transition from Late Antiquity to Early Middle Ages. The great flexibility of the decision-making and organizational solutions used by the Roman army allowed the ‘new lords’ to readapt them and thus maintain power in early medieval Europe for a long time. From a perspective ranging from political, social and economic history to law, anthropology, and linguistic, this book demonstrates how interesting and fruitful the investigation of this specific cultural imprint can be in order to gain a better understanding of the origins of the civilization that arouse after the fall of the Roman world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neanderthals populated western Europe from nearly 250,000 to 30,000 years ago when they disappeared from the archaeological record. In turn, populations of anatomically modern humans, Homo sapiens, came to dominate the area. Seeking to understand the nature of this replacement, which has become a hotly debated issue, Paul Mellars brings together an unprecedented amount of information on the behavior of Neanderthals. His comprehensive overview ranges from the evidence of tool manufacture and related patterns of lithic technology, through the issues of subsistence and settlement patterns, to the more controversial evidence for social organization, cognition, and intelligence. Mellars argues that previous attempts to characterize Neanderthal behavior as either "modern" or "ape-like" are both overstatements. We can better comprehend the replacement of Neanderthals, he maintains, by concentrating on the social and demographic structure of Neanderthal populations and on their specific adaptations to the harsh ecological conditions of the last glaciation. Mellars's approach to these issues is grounded firmly in his archaeological evidence. He illustrates the implications of these findings by drawing from the methods of comparative socioecology, primate studies, and Pleistocene paleoecology. The book provides a detailed review of the climatic and environmental background to Neanderthal occupation in Europe, and of the currently topical issues of the behavioral and biological transition from Neanderthal to fully "modern" populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Reason of Church Government, a thirty-three-year-old John Milton writes of his hope that by labour and intent study... joyn'd with the strong propensity of nature, I might perhaps leave something so written to aftertimes, as they should not willingly let it die. Even the young Milton, committed as he was to achieving a place in the annals of poetic history, might have been surprised by the strenuous efforts in aftertimes to keep his legacy alive. The fifteen essays that comprise this collection focus, from varied perspectives, on Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and A Mask, poems that have attracted sustained critical attention. Several consider shorter poems, such as the Nativity Ode, The Passion, Upon the Circumcision, and Sonnet 14. Some pursue issues of sources, authorship, and audience, while still others probe extant biographical records or reflect on the author as biographical subject. Diverse though they are in subject matter, approaches, and emphases, all demonstrate how Milton scholarship in the twenty-first century continues to be committed to not willingly let ting] Milton's literary legacy die. Book excerpt: It is 1802. The struggling seafaring town of Concarneau clings to the perilous Breton Coast of France and endures Napoleon's increasing taxes and tariffs. After a cholera epidemic devastates Concarneau's population and leaves the town without a healer, Captain Louis Bedard, master mariner and bereaved patriarch, decides to seek a medisin - a doctor - but how can he amass the year's advance salary necessary to pay such a man? Bedard resorts to smuggling and finds himself, for the first time, at odds with the local law. Each month on the dark of the new moon, he slips the wharf and sails under an alias. The work is dangerous; most times he and his crew barely avoid capture by Concarneau's ambitious Captain Peder LaMotte. Bedard's plan works until one stormy night when he is betrayed by a vengeful crewmember and arrested by LaMotte. While Bedard awaits trial in the town jail he thinks his life can get no worse, until his beloved only daughter visits and tells him that she has finally met the man she wants to marry.
