Book Synopsis Providence Perceived by : Mark W. Elliott
Download or read book Providence Perceived written by Mark W. Elliott and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will offer an account not so much of God’s Providence an sich, but rather of divine providence as experienced by believers and unbelievers. It will not ask questions about whether and how God knows the future, or how suffering can be accounted for (as is the case in the treatments by William Lane Craig, Richard Swinburne, or J. Sanders), but will focus on prayer and decision-making as a faithful and/or desperate response to the perception of God as having some controlling influence. The following gives an idea of the ground to be covered: The patristic foundations of the Christian view of Providence; The medieval synthesis of ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ views; Reformational and Early Modern: the shift towards piety; Modern Enlightenment: Providence and Ethics; Barth and the Sceptics; The sense of Providence in the Modern Novel and World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of Victorian Britain’s pre-eminent social reformers, Lord Shaftesbury (1801–85) exerted a lasting impact surpassing all of his parliamentary contemporaries. Despite being born into one of England’s aristocratic families, a combination of early childhood deprivation, an earnest Evangelical faith, and an abiding sense of noblesse oblige made him a champion of the poor. His seminal contribution to the Victorian factory reform movement represented just one of his manifold legacies. This contextual study of the Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury probes the mind behind the man to evaluate the religious and philosophical ideas, and their leading figures, that ignited his lifelong activism in the public sphere. This book reveals that far from representing a relic of the Victorian age, the Earl of Shaftesbury, whilst a conservative by predilection, was essentially a forward-looking and farsighted reformer. The principles that Shaftesbury espoused of industrial justice, class harmony, subsidiarity, volunteerism, selfless individualism, religious observance, strong families and private enterprise tempered by moderate state intervention are essentially those prized by liberal democracies today as the foundation for social cohesion, prosperity, and human flourishing.

Book Synopsis Migration and the Origins of the English Atlantic World by : Alison Games
Download or read book Migration and the Origins of the English Atlantic World written by Alison Games and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England's seventeenth-century colonial empire in North America and the Caribbean was created by migration. The quickening pace of this essential migration is captured in the London port register of 1635, the largest extant port register for any single year in the colonial period and unique in its record of migration to America and to the European continent. Alison Games analyzes the 7,500 people who traveled from London in that year, recreating individual careers, exploring colonial societies at a time of emerging viability, and delineating a world sustained and defined by migration. The colonial travelers were bound for the major regions of English settlement -- New England, the Chesapeake, the West Indies, and Bermuda -- and included ministers, governors, soldiers, planters, merchants, and members of some major colonial dynasties -- Winthrops, Saltonstalls, and Eliots. Many of these passengers were indentured servants. Games shows that however much they tried, the travelers from London were unable to recreate England in their overseas outposts. They dwelled in chaotic, precarious, and hybrid societies where New World exigencies overpowered the force of custom. Patterns of repeat and return migration cemented these inchoate colonial outposts into a larger Atlantic community. Together, the migrants' stories offer a new social history of the seventeenth century. For the origins and integration of the English Atlantic world, Games illustrates the primary importance of the first half of the seventeenth century.

Book Synopsis Marsilio Ficino as Reader of Plotinus: The ‘Enneads’ Commentary by : Stephen Gersh
Download or read book Marsilio Ficino as Reader of Plotinus: The ‘Enneads’ Commentary written by Stephen Gersh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first ever systematic philosophical study of Marsilio Ficino’s Commentary on Plotinus’ ‘Enneads’ (first published in Florence, 1492), this work of Ficino being arguably as definitive for the Florentine thinker’s later work as the Platonic Theology was for his earlier. Publication of the present study uniquely illuminates the extent to which Plotinus had always been the crucial influence over Ficino’s revolutionary projects of introducing Platonic thought based on original Greek sources to western Europe, correcting certain features of late medieval and Renaissance Aristotelianism, and laying the foundations of a new Christian Platonism. The study can be read both as an independent introduction to Ficino’s later philosophy and as the complement to the first modern edition and translation of the Commentary on the 'Enneads' itself also by Stephen Gersh (I Tatti Renaissance Library, 2017-).

Flames are climbing the walls of a manor near Chesapeake Bay, where eleven-year-old Emily Spencer lives with her doting parents. Emilys parents are injured in their attempt to rescue her from the fire. Unable to care for their daughter, the Spencers set in motion the events that will change Emilys life forever. They ask friends to find their estranged son, Edward, so that he may take care of Emily. Just before the fire, Edward had asked the lovely Providence Montgomery to join and marry him in the Northwest Territory. The young woman decides to take Emily with her on an arduous journey into the unknown. Emilys nanny urges her son, Andy, who was born into slavery, to accompany them. As oxen-drawn wagons pull them away from everything they hold dear, the three discover a land where danger lurks and where plans take on a life of their own. Torn between poignant memories and the terror of an unexpected encounter, Emily strikes a bargain with Goda bargain that later haunts her. Who can help her find the direction she so desperately seeks? In this frontier of melting snow and mysterious forests, author Shirley Emmett weaves a lively tale of hope, dreams, and a literal and figurative journey of faith.
