Book excerpt: This book was begun after three of the present authors gave a series of in vited talks on the subject of the structure and properties of carbon filaments. This was at a conference on the subject of optical obscuration, for which submicrometer diameter filaments with high length-to-diameter ratios have potential applications. The audience response to these talks illustrated the need of just one scientific community for a broader knowledge of the struc ture and properties of these interesting materials. Following the conference it was decided to expand the material presented in the conference proceedings. The aim was to include in a single volume a description of the physical properties of carbon fibers and filaments. The research papers on this topic are spread widely in the literature and are found in a broad assortment of physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering and polymer science journals and conference proceedings (some of which are obscure). Accordingly, our goal was to produce a book on the subject which would enable students and other researchers working in the field to gain an overview of the subject up to about 1987.

Book excerpt: Conventional synthetic materials, like metals, ceramics or glass, are usually isotropic substances, and their suitability for structural applications is achieved by morphological design and combination in the macroscopic scale. However, in modem engineering this is often not acceptable. As an alternative, the use of non-homogeneous, anisotropic materials, with significant stiffness and strength only in the directions these mechanical properties are really needed, can lead to enormous material (and weight) savings. This is the case of multiphase systems called composite materials. In these composites, different material parts are added and arranged geometrically, under clearly designed and controlled conditions. Usually, a structure of fibers provides strength and stiffness and a matrix helds them together, whilst providing the geometric form. Carbon fibers are among the high-performance fibers employed in these advanced structural composites, which are profoundly changing many of today's high technology industries. New research and development challenges in this area include upgrading the manufacturing process of fibers and composites, in order to improve characteristics and reduce costs, and modifying the interfacial properties between fibers and matrix, to guarantee better mechanical properties. The interdisciplinary nature of this "new frontier" is obvious, involving chemistry, materials science, chemical and mechanical engineering. Other topics, which more often are treated separately, are also important for the understanding of the processes of fiber production. Carbon filaments is one such topic, as the study of their mechanisms of nucleation and growth is clearly quite relevant to the production of vapour-grown carbon fibers.

Book excerpt: The laser diffraction technique for measuring the diameter of fine filaments has been adapted for measuring the transverse coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of individual carbon and graphite filaments. CTE was measured on three types of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-derived filaments and one type of pitch-derived filament that had already been heat-treated to 2600 C. The measurements are unique because the filaments were in a surface-traction-free environment; the data are therefore inherently more accurate than those obtained by conventional methods. Significant variations in the transverse CTE of pitch-based filaments were observed; they have been attributed to local differences in the (transverse) preferred orientation of the graphite layer planes in those filaments. Individual pitch-based filaments were found to twist about their axis when constrained at both ends and heated; the center of the filament presumably undergoes maximum deflection. Keywords: Thermal expansion, Thermal strain, Carbon filaments, Carbon fibers, Composites, Graphite Fibers.

Book excerpt: Composites containing carbon and graphite fibers can release fibers into the atmosphere during a fire. This release can potentially cause failure in some types of electrical equipment. Reduced fiber dispersion during and after combustion will reduce risks. Epoxidized char forming systems were synthesized which will react with commercially available surface treated carbon fiber. Fibers modified with these char formers retained adhesion in a specific epoxy matrix resin. Small scale combustion testing indicates that using these char former modified fibers in laminates will help to reduce the dispersement of fibers resulting from exposure to fire without sacrificing resin to fiber adhesion. Book excerpt: Type P fibers are capable of achieving a tensile strength of 4.0 GPa (approximately 600 Kpsi) with an elongation to break approacing 2.0 percent. However, such properties have been measured only on monofilaments with equal to or less than 7.5 micro meter diameter, carbonized at 1700 C and prepared from a mesophase pitch derived from a carefully filtered precursor. The modulus of the fibers is easily increased by heating to higher temperatures, but the tensile strength is usually reduced by such treatment. The tensile strength of the fiber shows a strong dependence on the gauge length, down to about .3 mm. Frequency-of-break analysis revealed a bimodal distribution. Fiber failure below 2.0 GPa (300 Kpsi) is induced by macro-flaws such as foreign particles, voids and surface cracks, all of which were identified by optical and electron microscopy. The wedge-like crack, very common in yarn filaments may cause early fiber failure, particularly when the crack follows a tight spiral along the fiber axis, as it was observed in isolated cases. The ultimate tensile strength appears to be determined by crystallographic features, such as crystallite size, number of defects, extend of misorientation, as well as by the symmetry of fiber cross section. A cylindrical 'tree-trunk' symmetry always results in higher strength than the radial, 'wheel-spoke' symmetry.

Book excerpt: Carbon Fibers presents an up-to-date review of the progress pertaining to the formation of carbon fibers from rayon, acrylic, and pitch precursors. The book emphasizes the preparation, characterization, and properties of commercial materials. It also considers the compressive properties of carbon fibers, the lack of correlation between surface characterization and fiber-matrix interactions, and the discrepancy between surface composition as determined by XPS and the reaction of surface groups with chemical reagents. Other topics discussed include:
