Book excerpt: Eurographics, the European Association for Computer Graphics, has always been an important forum for discussions and presentation of results concerning the first ISO Graphical Standard, GKS (the Graphical Kernel System) and later of its three-dimensional extension, GKS-3D. This book is a collection of those articles which have appeared within the framework of Eurographics in the past 5 years, and which still contain, even after several years, valid and interesting results concerning the problems arising in connection with GKS. Some of these papers help the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the standard; others deal with general implementation problems, and finally there are some presentations of specific algorithms usable also for a GKS or GKS-3D implementation. The book may be of a particular interest to those specialists who intend to implement a GKS package or some similar graphics subsystem and who can therefore make direct use of the experiences reflected in this collection. The book should also be a valuable supplement in university courses concerned with teaching the principles of implementing device-independent computer graphics.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Graphical Kernal System (GKS) by : Frank Robert Albert Hopgood
Download or read book Introduction to the Graphical Kernal System (GKS) written by Frank Robert Albert Hopgood and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1986-01-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly acclaimed introduction to the Graphical Kernel System GKS has now been revised and updated following the publication of the International Standard (ISO 7942) in August 1985 and the draft international standard (ISO 8651) for the FORTRAN, Pascal, and Ada GKS language bindings. The main aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the concepts of GKS and the FORTRAN language binding. A basic knowledge of computer graphics is assumed. The first part of the text covers the background and major ideas of the system, and the second covers those features more likely to be required by the specialist graphics programmer. Appendices and an index allow the work to be used as a reference manual. All application programmers with an interest in computer graphics will find this book an invaluable aid.
Book Synopsis Object-Oriented Graphics by : Peter Wisskirchen
Download or read book Object-Oriented Graphics written by Peter Wisskirchen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, object-oriented programming is emerging from the research labora tories and invading into the field of industrial applications. More and more products have been implemented with the aid of object-oriented programming techniques and tools, usually as extensions of traditional languages in hybrid development systems. Some of the better known examples are OSF-Motif, News, Objective-C on the NeXT computer, the C extension C++, and CLOS an object oriented extension of LISP. All of these developments incorporate interactive graphics. Effective object-oriented systems in combination with a graphics kernel does it mean that the field of computer graphics has now become merely an aspect of the object-oriented world? We do not think so. In spite of interesting individual developments, there are still no sound object-oriented graphics sys tems available. If it is desired to develop a complex graphics application embed ded in a window-oriented system then it is still necessary to work with elemen tary tools. What is to be displayed and interactively modified inside a window must be specified with a set of graphics primitives at a low level, or has to be written with a standardized graphics kernel system such as GKS or PHIGS, i. e. , by kernels specified and implemented in a non-object-oriented style. With the terms GKS and PHIGS we enter the world of international graphics standards. GKS and PHIGS constitute systems, not mere collections of graphics primitives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text not only covers all topics required for a fundamental course in computer graphics but also emphasizes a programming-oriented approach to computer graphics. The book helps the students in understanding the basic principles for design of graphics and in developing skills in both two- and three-dimensional computer graphics systems. Written in an accessible style, the presentation of the text is methodical, systematic and gently paced, covering a range of essential and conceivable aspects of computer graphics, which will give students a solid background to generate applications for their future work. The book, divided into 11 chapters, begins with a general introduction to the subject and ends with explaining some of the exciting graphics techniques such as animation, morphing, digital image processing, fractals and ray tracing. Along the way, all the concepts up to two-dimensional graphics are explained through programs developed in C. This book is intended to be a course text for the B.Tech/M.Tech students of Computer Science and Engineering, the B.Tech students of Information Technology and the M.Sc. students pursuing courses in Computer Science, Information Science and Information Technology, as well as the students of BCA and MCA courses. Key Features : Fundamentals are discussed in detail to help the students understand all the needed theory and the principles of computer graphics. Extensive use of figures to convey even the simplest concepts. Chapter-end exercises include conceptual questions and programming problems.

Book Synopsis Advances in Computer Graphics IV by : W.T. Hewitt
Download or read book Advances in Computer Graphics IV written by W.T. Hewitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume of Advances in Computer Graphics gathers together a selection of the tutorials presented at the EUROGRAPHICS annual conference in Nice, France, Septem ber 1988. The six contributions cover various disciplines in Computer Graphics, giving either an in-depth view of a specific topic or an updated overview of a large area. Chapter 1, Object-oriented Computer Graphics, introduces the concepts of object ori ented programming and shows how they can be applied in different fields of Computer Graphics, such as modelling, animation and user interface design. Finally, it provides an extensive bibliography for those who want to know more about this fast growing subject. Chapter 2, Projective Geometry and Computer Graphics, is a detailed presentation of the mathematics of projective geometry, which serves as the mathematical background for all graphic packages, including GKS, GKS-3D and PRIGS. This useful paper gives in a single document information formerly scattered throughout the literature and can be used as a reference for those who have to implement graphics and CAD systems. Chapter 3, GKS-3D and PHIGS: Theory and Practice, describes both standards for 3D graphics, and shows how each of them is better adapted in different typical applications. It provides answers to those who have to choose a basic 3D graphics library for their developments, or to people who have to define their future policy for graphics.

Book Synopsis Product Data Interfaces in CAD/CAM Applications by : J. Encarnacao
Download or read book Product Data Interfaces in CAD/CAM Applications written by J. Encarnacao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in product data exchange and interfaces in the CAD/CAM area is steadi ly growing. The rapidly increasing graphics applications in engineering and sci ence has led to a great variety of heterogeneous hardware and software products. This has become a major obstacle in the progress of systems integration. To improve this situation CAD/CAM users have called for specification and imple mentation of standardized product data interfaces. These needs resulted in the definition of preliminary standards in this area. Since 1975 activities have been concentrated on developing standards for three major areas: - computer graphics, - sculptured surfaces, and - data exchange for engineering drawings. The Graphical Kernel System (GKS) has been accepted as an international standard for graphics programming in 1984, Y14.26M (IGES) was adopted as an American Standard in 1981 and the VDA Surface Interface (VDAFS) has been accepted by the German National Standardization Institute (DIN NAM 96.4). Although considerable progress has been achieved, the complexity of the subject and the dynamics of the CAD/CAM-development still calls for more generality and compatibility of the interfaces. This has resulted in an inter national discussion on further improvements of the standards. The major goal of this book is to bring together the different views and experiences in industry and university in the area of Product Data Interfaces, thereby contributing to the ongoing work in improving the state of the art.
