With only one atomic layer thick and all its atoms are on the surface, graphene's properties could be altered by being brought into contact with any arbitrary surfaces, and similarly the close presence of graphene contact could change the properties of that surface as well. This thesis aims to provide insights into graphene-metal interactions by analyze novel phenomena and develop practical applications. First, we modified the graphene-copper interface to prevent the growths of thicker graphene islands in order to grow a uniform bilayer graphene (2LG), by introducing the concept of interface adhesive energy. To characterize the different types of 2LG better, we developed a machine-learning-assisted Raman analysis tool and confirmed that our FM-mode-grown 2LG is of quasi-AB-stacking. Taking advantage of the better mechanical properties of 2LG, a support-free, Marangoni-driven graphene transfer technique was developed. Next, we utilize the stability of Sn-graphene-Cu interfaces to develop an approach that allows for more reliable low-temperature bonding technology. The proposed bonding scheme inherently solves both high bonding temperature and interfacial diffusion issues. Specifically, the lowering of bonding temperature is achieved by introducing nano-cone features in the surface of the Cu side. A one-atomic-thick graphene interlayer on the Cu does not prevent the bonding between Cu and Sn, while preventing the atom diffusion to form the intermetallic compounds that are harmful for the reliability of the bonding. Finally, we examined graphene-metal interactions for the modification of optical properties in the graphene-aluminum and graphene-tin systems. The Sn nanodot arrays have a light-trapping effect on graphene, therefore, increases graphene absorption from 2% to 15% in spectral regime of [lambda] = 900-2000 nm. On the contrary, a counter-intuitive transmittance enhancement is observed in graphene-Al hetero-films. We find that the relative transmittance enhancement reaches up to 27% for 370nm incident light on an interface of graphene and 10nm-thick aluminum. These two examples reveal the fascinating aspect of how the interface between graphene and metal could bring about unexpected property alterations in either of the layer or the whole system together.

They are layered structures with strong chemical bonding within layers and relatively weak van der Waals force to combine layers together. This unique layer-bylayer nature makes it easy to exfoliate layers out and at the same time to re-assemble in arbitrary sequences with different combinations. The versatility, flexibility, and relatively low cost of production make the scientific community enthusiastic about their future. In this thesis, I investigate the fundamental physical processes of light-matter interactions in these layered structures, including graphene, boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides and heterostructures formed from these materials. My research involves state-of-the-art nanoscale fabrication and microscale photocurrent spectroscopy and imaging. In Chapter 1, 1 will briefly discuss basic physical properties of the vdW materials involved in this thesis and introduce the main nanofabrication and measurement techniques. Chapter 2-4 are about hot electron dynamics and electron-phonon coupling in intrinsic graphene systems, among which Chapter 2 is focusing on the generation mechanism of the photocurrent at the p-n interface, which is demonstrated to have a photothermoelectric origin. This indicates a weak electron-phonon coupling strength in graphene. Chapter 3 is a direct experimental follow-up of the work in Chapter 2 and reveals the dominant electron-phonon coupling mechanism at different temperature and doping regimes. In Chapter 4, I present the observation of anomalous geometric photocurrent patterns in various devices at the charge neutral point. The spatial pattern can be understood as a local photo-generated current near edges being collected by remote electrodes. The anomalous behavior as functions of change density and temperature indicates an interesting regime of energy and charge dynamics. In Chapter 5 and 6, 1 will show the photoresponse of graphene-BN heterostuctures. In graphene-BN stack directly on SiO2, we observed strong photo-induced doping phenomenon, which can be understood as charge transfer from graphene across BN and eventually trapped at the interface between BN and SiO2. By inserting another layer of graphene between BN and SiO2 , we can measure an electrical current after photoexcitation due to such charge transfer. We further studied the competition between this vertical charge transfer and in-plane carrier-carrier scattering in different regimes. In Chapter 7, I will briefly summarize collaborated work with Prof. Dimitri Basov's group on near-field imaging of surface polariton in two-dimensional materials. This technique provides a complementary tool to examine the intriguing light-matter interaction (for large momentum excitations) in low-dimensional materials. Chapter 8 is the outlook, from my own point of view, what more can be done following this thesis.

However, the lack of a band gap hinders the implementation of graphene in electronics; tuning the band gap of graphene would enable a precise control of the charge carriers. One of the promising solutions is to modify graphene with organic molecular building blocks. Organic molecules with a metal ion (metal- porphyrin, metal- phthalocyanine) are potential candidates, because of their robust structure and the fact that their charge and spin properties can be tuned. In this thesis, graphene was prepared by sublimating Si atoms from both Si and C- terminated SiC substrates. Three molecules which carry different spin information were studied by STM experiments. Through collaborations, DFT calculations were used to improve our understanding of the molecule- graphene interaction.The first molecule used in our experiment is Ni- phthalocyanine (NiPc). The Ni2+ ion has a 3d8 electron configuration, giving a spin- state of 0. The second molecule is Pt- tetraphenylporphyrin (PtTPP(CO2Me)4). The Pt2+ ion also shows a d8 electron configuration with a spin state of zero. However, the Pt atom is heavier than Ni, which should increase the spin- orbit effects. The third molecule is tetraphenylporphyrin iron(III) chloride (Fe(TPP)Cl). The Fe3+ in Fe(TPP)Cl is stable in the high spin state (S=5/2). These three molecules each form well- ordered nearly square lattice molecular networks on graphene. The molecular lattice directions are dominated by the graphene symmetry, while the molecular orientations depend on the molecule- molecule interactions. The electronic couplings between each of three molecules and graphene are via the Van der Waals forces, which gives rise to the capacitive molecular- layer/ graphene interfaces. The electronic interactions between FeTPP molecules and graphene are stronger than those between NiPc or PtTPP molecules and graphene. The studies of the organic molecules with different spin information on the graphene has the potential to pave the way for the application of organometallic molecules/graphene interface in spintronic devices.
