Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture in Steuben County Knowing that any particular locality has long been devoted to this culture we are able to fix the mean temperature thereof, and by studying the circumstances prejudicial to the development of the vine, avoid the failures so often experienced by those who undertake this culture where it is impossible." "The grape requires four months, or one hundred and twenty days, to come to maturity; we can calculate the aggregate of temperature required to perfect its growth. Bordeaux, in France, being in latitude 44 50', has a mean temperature in spring of 56, in summer of 71, in autumn of 58; mean for spring, summer and autumn of 62 40'. And, as Bordeaux is near the centre of the wine districts of France, a data is furnished, other things being equal, of the climate required for the cultivation of the vine." It is an interesting study to investigate the particular features of the various vine-growing districts in Europe and the United States, and to notice that neither latitude, nor elevation, nor the amount of rain falling governs, but that other causes combine to render the cultivation certain and profitable. Also, to notice that the range of temperature is not so much controlling as we are inclined to believe. The grapes of Astrachan are said to be equal to the best of Italy, and the range of temperature there is more extreme than in many places of our own country. Astrachan is in latitude 46 21', on a level with the sea; has a mean temperature in spring of 52 6', in summer of 75 9', in autumn of 52 4', in winter 19 2'; making a mean for the year 50. California is undoubtedly the most favorable for grape culture of any part of the United States. The vineyards there produce, ordinarily, twice as much as the vineyards of any other grape district. The crop never fails, as it does in every other country. The soil is a deep, sandy loam, and in some places a rich, black loam and a gravelly clay. The climate is dry and uniform, which insures the grape from rt)t or mildew. The mean temperature of California for January is 44.2, for February 45.4, for March 53.4, for April 54.8, for May 62.7, for June 69.1, for July 69.4, for August 71.3, for September 71.1, for October 65.4, for November 54.9, for December 46.2; the spring average being 56.9, the summer 69.9, autumn, 63.8. A writer on the meteorological conditions necessary to the production of grape wine of the best quality, says, "In addition to a summer and an autumn sufficiently hot, it is indispensable that at a given period - that which follows the appearance of the seeds - there should be a month, the mean temperature of which does not fall below 66.2, Fahrenheit." September and October in California has a mean temperature of 68.2, maturing the grape with sufficient sugar to make the fruit luscious and the wine rich and of the very best quality; consequently, the wines of that state come nearer to the wines of Italy than any produced upon the American continent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of American Grape Culture In the fall of 1873, the writer visited the vineyards of Dr. Robert Peter, residing near Lexington, Kentucky. In these vineyards were all the leading and nearly all the then introduced varieties of American grapes. The vines were bearing generally, and the fruit on nearly all was ripe or ripening. The Doctor, having been my instructor in Chemistry in Kentucky State Agricultural College, in which I had completed the scientific course in 1870, discoursed freely upon the character of vine and fruit of the varieties. It seemed to me that there might be numerous combinations, which would naturally occur in such a vineyard, and that one could expect some of the seedlings grown from such crossed seeds to turn out better than any in the vineyard, by combination of excellencies of both parents in the crossed. This re ection aroused within me a strong desire to test the matter. The Doctor gave me clusters of all wished, some thirty or forty kinds. The seeds of these were carefully saved, separately labeled, and noted as to varieties standing near the vine which bore the seeds. These seeds were planted at my new home in Nebraska, but the season and other conditions being adverse, all were lost, yet the kindled ame of passion for experimentation continued to burn. The timbered belts along the streams of that bleak country were ransacked for the few wild grapes growing there, and the vines bearing the best fruit were marked to be removed to vineyard and later hybridized with larger berried kinds, as the only species there (v. 'vulpina) has small berries, although often quite sweet, and pure-in quality. However, a series of years of adversity - with drouth, intensely hard winters, and grasshoppers, - coming on, further experimentation there in that line was dropped. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of the Grape, and Wine-Making Three editions of this little treatise, within a year, being required to supply the demand for it, would seem to indicate that the public interest in Grape Culture is on the increase. The author therefore deems it his duty to give the result of his own experience, and that of his fellow-members of the "Wine-growers' Association," in vineyard culture during the past year. It was found that the severe frosts of January and February, 1852 - 8 to 12 below zero - killed many of the grape buds in warm exposed situations, and several vineyards in Kentucky, a few miles south of this city, scarcely produced any fruit. The hard frosts of the 18th and 19th of March did not injure the grape buds, although many apples, such as the yellow Belleflower, were killed in the opening bud; all the peaches, many of the pears, and most of the cherries were destroyed. The frosts of the middle of April and second week in May injured the young shoots of the vine, especially in low situations or near moisture, and in the rows near grass but with all these visitations from frosts, the grape crop was a very promising one until attacked by the rot, the second week in July, and subsequently the first week in August - the latter but slight. This disease appeared to affect those vineyards most, that were in low situations, or not fully exposed to a free circulation of air, either from close planting or otherwise. High manuring, deep hoeing or plowing, and a want of summer pruning at the right time, it was thought, increased the liability to rot. This disease, or something like it, prevailed in many parts of Europe, last year, where it had scarcely been known before, and in the island of Madeira caused an almost entire failure of the grape crop. In this vicinity it cut off about half of the average crop, reducing the product of the whole county to about one hundred gallons per acre. Some made more, but many less than that average. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture, Wines, and Wine-Making: With Notes Upon Agriculture and Horticulture I submit this work to the kind indulgence of the people of California. The short time allowed me to complete a work of such magnitude and importance will, I hope, serve as a partial excuse for its defects. To make a tour through a large portion of Europe - examine and collect information - select vines and trees - write the following work, with many of the extracts translated from eminent foreign authors and reports of scientific committees, I was allowed, including my journey to Europe and my return, but seven months and twenty-five days. The task was augmented by extensive and necessary correspondence with government officials, scientific societies, and eminent writers. During this time I have allowed myself little time for rest or recreation; and if I have succeeded in fulfilling my duty to my State and to her people, I shall feel myself amply rewarded. I plead for a lenient judgment on the work on account of my defective English, being a native of Hungary, although a naturalized American citizen, which will, I hope, fully explain this unavoidable defect. That my readers will understand my meaning without difficulty is all that I dare hope. The translations contained in the work were, in most cases, necessarily literal, and therefore presented difficulties not easily overcome. With these explanations, the author presents his work to the agricultural public, sincerely hoping that future experience may not belie present promises, but that the matter upon which it treats may prove a valuable and an enduring source of wealth to the American horticulturist and farmer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture of the Grape The general principles of grape-culture are well understood; and yet there are differences of opin ion, diflerent modes of pruning and training, which, however slight they may seem to be in themselves, become of great importance when applied to so vast an interest. It is with a desire to contribute my mite from my own experience that I have prepared this treatise. In order that the work may embrace the combined experience of practical and scientific minds, I have availed myself of such helps as were at hand, especially relying upon Prof. Harris for de scriptions of injurious insects, and upon numerous writers in our horticultural Monthlies for practical suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hyatt's Hand-Book of Grape Culture There is, perhaps, no employment more agreeable, or more remunerative, than the culture Of the vine. Its origin dates far back into the remote ages of antiquity; and it must have flour iehed in the garden Of Eden; and it seems not to have been a forbidden fruit, like the apple. And to Adam, God said: Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face Of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit Of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold it was very good. Gen. I.: 29, 31. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grape Culture The grape is one of the most satisfactory fruits to be grown upon the home plot of uhatever dimensions, and the fruit grower in Penn sylvania will find a vineyard an excellent producer of income. A single vine near a house is a horticultural ornament and a source of much pleasure when the fruit is ripe. A grape arbor multiplies the advantages, and will yield fruit for jellies. Jams and the table for a family. More to be desired is the small vineyard of 50 to 100 vines with varieties that ripen early and late, furnishing ripe, fruit from the first of August to the first of December, of the several colors and flavors of our modern varieties. The grape thrives in a variety of soils, so that no farm home and few others need to be deprived of this wholesome fruit. The notion that onlv experts can grow grapes is erroneous. Most of the grape growers began without experience or knowledge of grape culture and have found the work easy and the returns encouraging. This bulletin is prepared with a view to the needs and instruction of the beginner and amateur in grape culture as well as for the guidance of the commercial grower, who mav find here some suggestions that will be helpful in the midst of the grape troubles that arise. The expert needs no assistance and the writer will be pleased to have his criticism of this publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of American Grape-Growing Seventy-nine books on grapes enrich the pomology of North America, not counting numerous state and national publications. Pomological writers in America have been partial to the grape, for other fruits do not fare nearly so well. Twenty - two books are devoted to the strawberry, fourteen to the apple, to the peach nine, cranberry eight, plum five, pear nine, quince two, logan'berry one, while the cherry, raspberry, and blackberry are not once separated from other fruits in special books. Thus, though a comparative newcomer among the fruits of the country, the grape has been singled out for a treatise more times than all other fruits of temperate climates combined seventy-nine books on the grape, seventy on all other fruits. This statement of partiality does not lead to an apology for a new book on the grape. There is urgent need for a new book. But three of the seventy-nine treatises on this fruit are con temporary, and all but one, a handbook on training, are records from vanished minds. Methods change so rapidly and varieties multiply so fast, that to keep pace there must be new books on fruits every few years. Besides, the types of grapes are so diverse, and different soils, climates, and treatments produce such widely dissimilar results, that many books are required to do justice to this fruit the vineyard should be seen through many eyes.
