Book excerpt: My name is John Peter Blaul. I was born on August 26, 1949, around 10:00 AM. My buddies call me John or Johnny, my kids and grandkids call me Dad or Boompa. My eldest (Peter) when he was going on two years of age couldn’t say grandpa—it came out Boompa. The story was passed on and the name stuck. My story doesn’t start on August 26, 1949, it dates back as far back as my elders could remember. All of them liked to tell their family history and wanted to pass them on to the next generation. Henry John Blaul, my grandfather, was particularly instrumental in keeping a family tree and history. When I was 24-years-old he sent me a family tree of the Blaul and Farley families. He was 81-years-old at the time.

Book Synopsis Funerals and Fly Fishing by : Mary Bartek
Download or read book Funerals and Fly Fishing written by Mary Bartek and published by Henry Holt and Company (BYR). This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I start up the street toward my grandfather's house. Just how weird is it that I, Brad Stanislawski, am walking toward a funeral home of my own free will? Where do you fit in when you're oversized, underappreciated, and faced with a name like Stanislawski? Brad Stanislawski is looking forward to summer vacation, if only to get away from the classmates who make fun of his size (it's not his fault he's so tall) and his last name (Stan-is-lousy being their moniker of choice). So when Brad's mother announces that she's taking a summer vacation by herself and sending Brad across the country to stay with his estranged grandfather-who happens to be an undertaker-Brad thinks life couldn't possibly get any worse. Still, as Brad ought to know, first impressions can be deceiving, and a name can hold a lot more than embarrassment. What exactly does it mean to be Brad Stanislawski? In this thoughtful, funny first novel, Brad (with a little help from his grandfather) is about to find out for himself. Funerals and Fly Fishing is a 2005 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Book Synopsis Survival Food by : Thomas Pecore Weso
Download or read book Survival Food written by Thomas Pecore Weso and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate and engaging Native food memoir In these coming-of-age tales set on the Menominee Indian Reservation of the 1980s and 1990s, Thomas Pecore Weso explores the interrelated nature of meals and memories. As he puts it, “I cannot separate foods from the moments in my life when I first tasted them.” Weso’s stories recall the foods that influenced his youth in northern Wisconsin: subsistence meals from hunted, fished, and gathered sources; the culinary traditions of the German, Polish, and Swedish settler descendants in the area; and the commodity foods distributed by the government—like canned pork, dried beans, and powdered eggs—that made up the bulk of his family’s pantry. His mom called this “survival food.” These stories from the author’s teen and tween years—some serious, some laugh-out-loud funny—will take readers from Catholic schoolyards to Native foot trails to North Woods bowling alleys, while providing Weso’s perspective on the political currents of the era. The book also contains dozens of recipes, from turtle soup and gray squirrel stew to twice-baked cheesy potatoes. This follow-up to Weso’s Good Seeds: A Menominee Indian Food Memoir is a hybrid of modern foodways, Indigenous history, and creative nonfiction from a singular storyteller.
