Book excerpt: About the Book Just Shelly: A Survivor’s Story is a poignant memoir about abuse, childhood trauma, and the ability to heal. Michelle Smith was born into a life of violence. After her mother endured physical abuse at the hands of Michelle’s father, her mother finally took a stand when Michelle became his next potential victim, saving her from experiencing the abuse herself. This security would not last, however, as Michelle’s mother eventually married another man whose forms of abuse were much more covert and sinister. Thus, began years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of her stepfather, culminating in her mother’s discovery of the abuse when Michelle was a teenager. Relieved her mother knows the truth and is once again saving her from an abuser, Michelle is quickly shocked and confused to find that her mother blames her for the abuse, and a wall has now formed between the once close pair. Just Shelly: A Survivor’s Story provides a candid account of the fear, anger, shame, and confusion that abuse brings, but it also shows that self-love, hope, and inner healing can reign victorious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did the American people suddenly become "independent" on July 4, 1776, or is there something more to our shared history? History books tend to simplify the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence, but not Grandpa! Terrence Hagen wants his grandchildren--and everyone else--to know exactly what happened from the founding of Jamestown in 1607 to the time the Founding Fathers broke free from England. The reality is the real America was developed in that period between the founding of the first settlements to the Declaration of Independence. In this history book, you'll learn why America could be called an accident; self-government was not discovered by America; colonial America was the result of concurrent conflict among many entities; and subsequent immigration of non-English settlers changed the nature of the American colonist and produced ethnic, religious, and cultural conflicts. Laced with chapter summaries, quizzes, and stories of sacrifice, Grandpa's US Colonial History to 1800 tells the forgotten history of how the American Revolution was fought not to attain independence but to retain the level of independence early settlers enjoyed.

Book excerpt: The year 1929 was devastating for America. It was the beginning of the Great Depression, which led to our country’s economic collapse. The author, also born in 1929, lived through those challenging Depression years, experiencing firsthand the many adaptations and sacrifices needed to survive those trying times. Now some eighty-eight years later, the author looks back to review those key principles that helped folks survive those challenging 1930s. Although the times we are living in today are radically different than in those Depression years, the author holds to the belief that if these same key principles are followed by America’s working class today, they will be more successful in meeting the challenge of our ever-changing, complex society. This book offers some suggested guides that should aid today’s workers in achieving increased financial independence by following these same key principles, with grandpa’s retirement rocking chair as the goal!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you like Adventure, your in for a treat. Throw in a Pirate story and you’ll probably like it even more. Top it off with a mansion filled with puzzles, how could you go wrong? Three clever, adventurous siblings are invited to go on a pirate treasure hunt buy their Grandfather’s Last Will And Testament. They must put their lives on hold to fulfill their Grandfather’s last wish and try and find the treasure that he could not. This hunt for riches takes them across the glob to a holiday resort. There they must follow a journal to discover a two hundred year old stash of Pirate booty. However, their quest leads them to a mysterious puzzle mansion, with many rules and a short time limit. Will the treasure be found, or will something unexpected rock their world? This book was inspired by many adventure movies and T.V. shows. The main one being, The Goonies movie. So if that movie puts a smile on your face, then so will this book. A few other things that inspired this book were things like National Treasure and any one of the Treasure Island versions. Look out for references from things like Disney's/Lucas Film's Star Wars, Capcom’s Megaman and a certain potato chip slogan. This book was written for the young and old alike. There is no language and little violence so the younger ordinance will not be mentally scared. However, there are some complicated puzzles and riddles that the more mature people might like trying to solve before the characters do. This book is a good-old, funny, family friendly adventure that has a little for everyone. Action, adventure, comedy, romance and pirates. Can't forget the pirates. This isn't one of those stories that has an unrealistic plot, that makes up crazy things to fill in plot holes. This plot is rational, plausible and not too complicated. But most of all, it is still loads of fun, interesting and funny. In this volume, the main characters inherit a mysterious journal from their Grandfather’s estate. Over a few days, they spend their time reading through the book and discover an amazing pirate story from long ago.

Life brings joy, faith, pain, hope, despair, laughter, suffering, love, and hope. In Time, and Time Again, author Paul Brown shares a collection of stories from his life growing up during the 1950s to the 1970s. Culled from Brown's four earlier books in the Time series, the stories recapture his memories from childhood, through the teen years, to adulthood. The colorful narratives describe everything from his own adventures and emotions coming of age, to traveling to his grandmother's house for family events, to incidents and tragedies that shaped his memories. Time, and Time Again provides personal insights into the life and times of his extended family, including some eccentric relatives. With humor and an eye for details about people, places, and events, Brown writes about a plethora of topics including the daily struggles of the previous generation-from church, school, and social activities to battles with weather, insects, and crops to accidental deaths, disease, debt, alcohol, and cultural identifiers from Model T Fords to Jack Benny to Ozzie and Harriett. Time, and Time Again reminds us that time is a treasure that must be dearly held and cannot be replaced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After facing the realization I was going to become a grandfather to a great little boy, it seemed important to tell him something about his family history that occurred before he was born. With as busy as he is now in college, it may be awhile before he slows down long enough to inquire.I simply started at the beginning with the first memory I ever had, and chronicled many of the meaningful things in my life as I remembered them. I documented grade school, high school, and college experiences. I then moved on to my time in the military and in the working world, all the while starting a family with a special woman, Trudy, my wife of nearly forty-seven years. The highlights in my life get a treatment, including my travels and the events that affected me deeply enough to shape my thinking, because I also share my many opinions. Here then is Grandpa’s Backstory: Because Somebody Might Need to Know!
