Book Synopsis Random Polynomials by : A. T. Bharucha-Reid
Download or read book Random Polynomials written by A. T. Bharucha-Reid and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Mathematical Statistics: A Series of Monographs and Textbooks: Random Polynomials focuses on a comprehensive treatment of random algebraic, orthogonal, and trigonometric polynomials. The publication first offers information on the basic definitions and properties of random algebraic polynomials and random matrices. Discussions focus on Newton's formula for random algebraic polynomials, random characteristic polynomials, measurability of the zeros of a random algebraic polynomial, and random power series and random algebraic polynomials. The text then elaborates on the number and expected number of real zeros of random algebraic polynomials; number and expected number of real zeros of other random polynomials; and variance of the number of real zeros of random algebraic polynomials. Topics include the expected number of real zeros of random orthogonal polynomials and the number and expected number of real zeros of trigonometric polynomials. The book takes a look at convergence and limit theorems for random polynomials and distribution of the zeros of random algebraic polynomials, including limit theorems for random algebraic polynomials and random companion matrices and distribution of the zeros of random algebraic polynomials. The publication is a dependable reference for probabilists, statisticians, physicists, engineers, and economists.

Book Synopsis Large Deviations Techniques and Applications by : Amir Dembo
Download or read book Large Deviations Techniques and Applications written by Amir Dembo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large deviation estimates have proved to be the crucial tool required to handle many questions in statistics, engineering, statistial mechanics, and applied probability. Amir Dembo and Ofer Zeitouni, two of the leading researchers in the field, provide an introduction to the theory of large deviations and applications at a level suitable for graduate students. The mathematics is rigorous and the applications come from a wide range of areas, including electrical engineering and DNA sequences. The second edition, printed in 1998, included new material on concentration inequalities and the metric and weak convergence approaches to large deviations. General statements and applications were sharpened, new exercises added, and the bibliography updated. The present soft cover edition is a corrected printing of the 1998 edition.

Book Synopsis Entropy, Large Deviations, and Statistical Mechanics by : Richard.S. Ellis

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has two main topics: large deviations and equilibrium statistical mechanics. I hope to convince the reader that these topics have many points of contact and that in being treated together, they enrich each other. Entropy, in its various guises, is their common core. The large deviation theory which is developed in this book focuses upon convergence properties of certain stochastic systems. An elementary example is the weak law of large numbers. For each positive e, P{ISn/nl 2: e} con verges to zero as n --+ 00, where Sn is the nth partial sum of indepen dent identically distributed random variables with zero mean. Large deviation theory shows that if the random variables are exponentially bounded, then the probabilities converge to zero exponentially fast as n --+ 00. The exponen tial decay allows one to prove the stronger property of almost sure conver gence (Sn/n --+ 0 a.s.). This example will be generalized extensively in the book. We will treat a large class of stochastic systems which involve both indepen dent and dependent random variables and which have the following features: probabilities converge to zero exponentially fast as the size of the system increases; the exponential decay leads to strong convergence properties of the system. The most fascinating aspect of the theory is that the exponential decay rates are computable in terms of entropy functions. This identification between entropy and decay rates of large deviation probabilities enhances the theory significantly.

Book Synopsis Inland & Maritime Waterways & Ports by : G. Willems
Download or read book Inland & Maritime Waterways & Ports written by G. Willems and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland & Maritime Waterways & Ports: Design, Construction, and Operation covers the proceedings of the technical sessions in the 25th Permanent International Association of Navigation Congress, held in Scotland. This book is organized into two sections encompassing 10 chapters. The first section deals first with means for the protection of banks and bottom waterways against the attack by currents and waves, including those generated by ships. These topics are followed by discussions on methods of increasing waterways capacity and safety; sedimentation reduction and improving and maintaining navigable depths in alluvial channels; integration of ocean-coastal-inland navigation; and improvements of maritime ports and inland terminals. The second section starts with discussions of the developments in the construction of ships, navigational aids, waterways and harbors, traffic management and installations, with particular emphasis on risk analysis and safety criteria regarding transportation, unloading, and storage of liquefied natural and petroleum gases. Other topics covered in this section include economic optimization of the whole dredging cycle; cargo handling systems and equipment; design and construction of port facilities and arrangement of quay platforms; and coastal erosion caused by harbor works and corrective measures. This book will prove useful to design and navigation engineers and researchers.
