Book excerpt: FAMILIAR STRANGERS… Amanda Smith’s worst fear had been confirmed: the man she’d sent to prison was getting released. After surviving a brutal attack that had stolen her memories, she’d spent the past six years looking over her shoulder. And she was getting ready to run again, when she suddenly found herself in the protection of Evan Quade—the husband she couldn’t remember. But proof of Evan’s claim was stamped on the face of her five-year-old son. Though she knew she should keep her distance, Amanda was drawn to the larger-than-life man who swore to defend her—and their son—from a madman bent on revenge. Now, with only each other to trust, could they overcome danger—and desire?

Book excerpt: More than a collection of fishing stories, A Place on the Water is a passionate and eloquent exploration of subjects with broad appeal: love of land and water, informed and unsentimental appreciation of nature, and outrage at changes that threaten to obliterate places we can no longer afford to take for granted. Jerry Dennis’s sparkling prose and Glenn Wolff’s captivating illustrations transport us to a world we recognize from childhood: a place of limitless range and possibility, shimmering with life, where the very next cast will be the one that hooks something enormous and wonderful. PRAISE: “A Place on the Water is a collection of lyrical, haunting essays, set in northern Michigan. Many are about fishing, but that does not necessarily mean they are to be enjoyed strictly by anglers. Hemingway’s Big Two-Hearted River was about fishing, too, but can be read for pleasure if you have never wet a line…Dennis covers a lot of ground, then; but there is throughout the book a kind of constant tone, as sharp and precise as the scent of cedar. And it stays with the reader long after he has put down the book.” —Geoffrey Norman, author of American Way “Eloquent essays about the author’s adventures exploring his love of land, water and nature in his beloved Michigan…Enjoyable reading with beautiful, evocative illustrations.” —Sports Afield "Jerry Dennis is one of a handful of superb writer who love angling deeply and write memoirs full of warmth, eloquence, and wit. A Place on the Water is a book of many robust—and fragile—miracles." —Nick Lyons, author of Spring Creek

Harbor Island, Hog Island, Eagle Island, Marion, Ford, Rennie or Power Island... And sometimes part of this 198-acre land mass in Grand Traverse Bay is connected by a tiny islet to a smaller, approximately two-acre island, which has been called Squaw Island, The Haunted Island, Fisherman's Island, "but most of all, Bassett Island. When Orange Risdon made the land survey in 1852, he included them in one report, simply titled "An Island in Grand Traverse Bay"--Intro.

Book excerpt: As much as the Civil War was a battle over the survival of the United States, for the men of Company K of the First Michigan Sharpshooters, it was also one battle in a longer struggle for the survival of Anishinaabewaki, the homelands of the Anishinaabeg—Ojibwe, Odawa, and Boodewaadamii peoples . The men who served in what was often called ‘the Indian Company’ chose to enlist in the Union army to contribute to their peoples’ ongoing struggle with the state and federal governments over status, rights, resources, and land in the Great Lakes. This meticulously researched history begins in 1763 with Pontiac’s War, a key moment in Anishinaabe history. It then explores the multiple strategies the Anishinaabeg deployed to remain in Michigan despite federal pressure to leave. Anishinaabe men claimed the rights and responsibilities associated with male citizenship—voting, owning land, and serving in the army—while actively preserving their status as ‘Indians’ and Anishinaabe peoples. Indigenous expectations of the federal government, as well as religious and social networks, shaped individuals’ decisions to join the U.S. military. The stories of Company K men also broaden our understanding of the complex experiences of Civil War soldiers. In their fight against removal, dispossession, political marginalization, and loss of resources in the Great Lakes, the Anishinaabeg participated in state and national debates over citizenship, allegiance, military service, and the government’s responsibilities to veterans and their families.
