Book excerpt: The Forest Lake Dam is located on Big Creek which is a tributary of the Chariton River, Adair County, Missouri. The main purpose of the dam is to impound water for use in a water supply system operated by the City of Kirksville, Missouri. The impounded water is released by means of the bottom outlet. The lake is also for recreational use. The following problems were observed which could affect the safety of the dam, or which will require maintenance within a reasonable period of time. Heavy brush and trees on the upstream and downstream embankment slope; Rodent activity on the downstream embankment slope; The seepage occurring at the right abutment contact and downstream of the toe of the embankment 500 feet north of the left abutment: Concrete erosion on the ogee spillway crest; A 3-foot by 3-foot hole on the right wall of the spillway channel 30 feet upstream of the spillway chute; Vegetation in the spillway channel between the ogee and the spillway chute, and Inability to operate the two 16-inch gate valves in the valve vault.

Shifrin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall structural safety of the dam is not up to acceptable standards in view of needed repairs to the downstream slope. While the condition does not appear to jeopardize the safety of the dam under normal operating conditions, particularly in view of its performance since the 1967 overtopping incident, it does pose a relatively high hazard. While the dam does not exhibit signs of structural instability, prompt action should, nevertheless, be taken to repair the damage. Based on the criteria in the guidelines, the dam is in the high hazard potential classification, which means that loss of life and appreciable property loss could occur in the event of failure of the dam. Our inspection and evaluation indicates that the spillway of Rothwell Lake Dam does not meet the criteria set forth in the guidelines for a dam having the above size and hazard potential. Since there is high hazard potential downstream of the dam, the appropriate spillway design flood for this dam is the Probable Maximum Flood. It was determined that the reservoir/spillway system can accommodate 20 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam. Our evaluation indicates that he reservoir/spillway system will accommodate the 100-year flood without overtopping.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the inspection was to make an assessment of the general conditions of the dam with respect to safety, based upon available data and visual inspection, in order to determine if the dam poses hazards to human life or property. The inspection and evaluation indicate that the spillway does not meet the minimum criteria set forth in the recommended guidelines for an intermediate dam having a high hazard potential. The Probable Maximum Flood is the appropriate spillway design flood. The spillway will pass the 100-year flood (a flood having a 1 percent probability of being exceeded in any year) without overtopping the dam. The spillway will pass 55 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam. The Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) is defined as the flood that may be expected from the most severe combination of critical meteorologic and hydrologic conditions that are reasonably possible in the region. The height of the dam should be increased and/or the spillway size or shape should be changed to pass the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam.

Hoskins and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the inspection was to make an assessment of the general condition of the dam with respect to safety, based upon available data and visual inspection, in order to determine if the dam poses hazards to human life or property. The inspection and evaluation indicates that the spillway does not meet the criteria set forth in the guidelines for a dam having the above size and hazard potential. The spillway will pass 46% of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam. The Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) is defined as the flood that may be expected from the most severe combination of critical meteorologic and hydrologic conditions that are reasonably possible in the region. An additional deficiency, in accordance with the guidelines, is the lack of seepage analysis. These analyses should be obtained in the future. Other deficiencies visually observed by the inspection team were spalling of spillway concrete, open joints in the spillway, some deterioration of riprap, bank erosion at the end of the spillway stilling basin and erosion in a few small areas on the upstream slope.
