Book excerpt: As with most people of his generation, Fred Britt didn't really mention the war unless he was with fellow veterans. But when Colin Simmons found 20 hours of tapes that Fred had recorded of his experiences, after he died, 'I thought it would be nice if people could hear and read about his experiences, the story of the common man. On the tapes my Grandad asks if one of his grandchildren could do something with them. I had no idea what he did during the war. By doing this I am ensuring that his name and what he went through has not been forgotten.' Fred served with them through his training in the UK, over to Africa (at the end of El Alamein), the Invasion of Pantelleria, Sicily, & Italy, including the battles of the River Sangro, and Anzio. When Victory over Europe was declared he was then dispatched to Africa to begin training for the invasion of Japan. When that was averted he was then sent to the Middle East and was involved in the Palestine War. He returned to his family in Portsmouth in 1946.

After her death he embarks upon what his partner Gary describes as “Dave’s Odyssey” – a journey that takes him from the Heartland of America to the South, and back into time. Dave encounters far more than he could have imagined, including the paranormal, extraordinary discoveries about his roots, family secrets, as well as coming to terms with identity and orientation. A Fine Line of Distinction: In Search of Roots is a work of historical fiction base, however, on the historical facts of six of the author’s wife’s ancestors who fought for the Confederacy, and two of his own ancestors who fought for the Union. In the novel and in history seven of the eight men converged at the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) in September, 1862; five would survive, one would never admit it.

This book will awaken the explorer in all of us." ?Chris Anderson, Head of TED National Geographic Explorer and TED Prize-winner Dr. Sarah Parcak gives readers a personal tour of the evolution, major discoveries, and future potential of the young field of satellite archaeology. From surprise advancements after the declassification of spy photography, to a new map of the mythical Egyptian city of Tanis, she shares her field’s biggest discoveries, revealing why space archaeology is not only exciting, but urgently essential to the preservation of the world’s ancient treasures. Parcak has worked in twelve countries and four continents, using multispectral and high-resolution satellite imagery to identify thousands of previously unknown settlements, roads, fortresses, palaces, tombs, and even potential pyramids. From there, her stories take us back in time and across borders, into the day-to-day lives of ancient humans whose traits and genes we share. And she shows us that if we heed the lessons of the past, we can shape a vibrant future. Includes Illustrations

Book excerpt: Solomon Creed, the enigmatic hero introduced in The Searcher, must stop a killer tied to a conspiracy stretching back over generations to the dying days of World War II. Solomon Creed has no recollection of who he is, or where he comes from. The only solid clue to his identity is a label stitched in his jacket that reads: "This suit was made to treasure for Mr. Solomon Creed." The jacket fits perfectly, and so does the name, but there is a second name on the label, the name of the tailor who made the suit and an address in southern France. Solomon heads to France in search of this man, hoping to discover more about who he is. But instead of answers he finds a bloody corpse, the Star of David carved into his chest and the words "Finishing what was begun" daubed in blood on the wall. When the police discover Solomon at the crime scene they suspect he is the murderer and lock him up. Solomon must escape to clear his name and solve the mystery of why the last remaining survivors of a notorious Nazi death camp are being hunted down and murdered. Only by saving these survivors from evil can Solomon hope to piece together the truth about a decades-old conspiracy as well as discover the key to his own identity.

Alice was born during World War II in Gravesend, Kent, England, where she is raised, nurtured, and deeply loved by her maternal grandparents. Brought up in the Salvation Army faith, her dream is to become an officer with her own corps and to do missionary work overseas. After a broken relationship with Carl, who Alice hoped to marry and work side by side as officers, she moves to London and becomes a commissioned officer. There she unexpectedly meets Carl again and they marry. Eventually the couple journey to the Sudan as missionaries. But Carl leaves Alice when he falls for another woman, even though Alice is pregnant with their first child. Alice’s faith has been sorely tested, turning her away from religion. It takes a reunion with James, a young doctor who worked with her at the medical mission in Sudan to bring Christianity back into her life. Although James is an atheist, his love for Alice draws him into missionary work, this time in Zambia, where the now married couple live.

Book excerpt: Animated films often bring to mind images of Saturday morning cartoons on television, but at one time, animated films, both long and short, were found mostly on the silver screen as part of the featured program. In 1977, George Lucas even specially requested a cartoon to open Star Wars-"Duck Dodgers and the 241⁄2 Century," featuring Daffy Duck. In its rich history, cinematic animation has developed from silent monochrome images to sound-filled shorts that ran with newsreels and adventure serials-to animation sequences used to enliven commercials or live-action films-and finally to feature films like Fantasia and Cinderella. This encyclopedia covers all English language animation from the crucial first eighty years of its history. From the popular to the obscure, from Bugs to Mickey, from the short to the feature, nearly 7,000 items are covered. Each entry includes production information, date, running time, and a synopsis. Much of the information compiled here is rare. For example, character voices once considered "anonymous" are here identified, and animated films now lost because they were once considered expendable are here given the attention they deserve. A complete index allows multiple points of access.

Playing marbles with his friends. Fighting with his older brother, Zola. Zola, who must always be first. Who must always be best. But when the Germans invade Greece, the war suddenly comes impossibly close. Overnight, neighbors become enemies. People begin to keep secrets (Petros’s family most of all). And for the first time, Petros has the chance to show Zola that he’s not just a little brother but that he can truly be counted on. Soon what were once just boys’ games become matters of life and death as Petros and Zola each wonder if, like their resistance fighter cousin, they too can make a difference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On 1 September 1939 evacuee children arrived at Cirencester, the first of 'a sorry procession' to leave the cities for the comparative safety of the Cotswolds. By the end of the war the figures had run into thousands and almost every district had been touched by the war." "In this uniquely detailed account of the impact of the Second World War on the Cotswolds, June R. Lewis shows how national policy was interpreted at local level and how it influenced everyday village and rural life. Evacuees' letters describe their terror at seeing cows for the first time and their wonder at finding 'apples grow on trees' as well as the misery of being frightened and away from home. Villagers recount their own local part in the Invasion Plan and the precautions taken against the threat of enemy landings, bomb damage and injury to civilians: in August 1939 3,750 gas masks were issued in Cheltenham alone, and elaborate measures were taken to protect Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral, where over 60 tolls of sand were used to lag the tomb of Edward II and eight panels were removed from the great east window. As the war went on an increasing military presence was felt in the Cotswolds, as the RAF took over airfields in hitherto quiet rural districts, at Aston Down and South Cerney among others, and US forces became integrated into local life." "The book also describes the role of the Home Guard, and there are accounts of the turning over of factories, now camouflaged, such as Lister's at Dursley, to weapon production. Contemporary records show the use of Intelligence, including the role of the National Pigeon Service, the Cotswolds claiming to be the first to use a pigeon with success in secret communication with an agent behind enemy lines. Finally, The Cotswolds at War reveals the changing use of land during the war years, including the 'Dig for Victory' campaign and the role of the Women's Land Army, and describes local efforts at fund-raising and entertainment." "A vivid recreation of the Cotswolds during a time of war, the result of thorough research based on personal reminiscences and contemporary newspaper accounts, this absorbing book is amply illustrated by archive photographs. It will be of interest to all who presently live in or visit the Cotswolds, and will also be welcomed by historians for its closely detailed account of local communities during the Second World War."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: It is 1958 and the Sputnik satellite has taken a god up into space; back on earth, five-year-old Andy has a new sister, Elaine - a baby who, his father insists, is 'not quite all there'. While his parents argue over whether or not to send elaine away, Andy sleeps beside her cot each night, keeping guard and watching as his mother - once an ambitious, energetic nurse - twists away into her private, suffocating sadness. Knots keep treasures safe, Andy's rope-maker grandfather tells him, and, as he listens to stories of the great Harry Houdini, Andy learns the Carrick Bend, the Midshipman's Hitch and the Monkey's Fist. Then a young painter, hired to decorate the family's house, seems to call Andy's mother back from the grief in which she is lost. But one day, at The Siding - the old railway carriage that serves as the family's seaside retreat - Andy is left in charge of his baby sister on a wind-chipped beach, where he discovers that not all treasure can be kept safe for ever. Three decades later, when his father dies and his other sister calls him home, Andrew returns from self-imposed exile to The Siding, the place where his life first unravelled. Looking back on the broken strands of his childhood, he tries, at last, to weave them together, aided by his grandfather's copy of The Ashley Book of Knots and the arrival of a wild-haired, tango-dancing sculptor - a woman with her own ideas about making peace with the past.
