This book was released on 1984 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference grammar provides a description of Mandarin Chinese in familiar terms and enables the English-speaking reader to transfer his/her knowledge of English to the study of Chinese. Many of the unique features of the language are treated through a comparison with semantically corresponding, though syntactically different, features in English. Aside from the conventional types of sentences, special constructions are amply explained and illustrated for the reader. Understanding the specific meaning of each of these constructions is one of the central themes of the grammar. This book contains a number of original analyses, such as that of the -shi---de- construction and the notion of continuum for the indiscrete nature of linguistic structure, which should serve as a valuable reference source for both the language teacher and the profession of Chinese linguistics."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates historical motivations for the emergence of the resultative construction in Chinese from the following four aspects: (a) disyllabification, (b)adjacent context, (c) semantic integrity, and (d) frequency of co-occurence of a pair of verb and resultative. The author also addresses a series of grammatical changes and innovations caused by the formation of this resultative construction, such as the development of aspect, mood, verb reduplication, the new predicate structure, the disposal construction, the passive construction, the verb copying construction, and the new topicalization construction, all of which together shape the grammatical system of Modern Chinese. The present analysis raises and discusses a number of theoretical issues that are meaningful to various linguistic disciplines like pragmatics, discourse analysis, grammaticalization, and general historical linguistics.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Syntactic Grammar: Functional and Conceptual Principles is unique in that it discusses the organizational principles of Chinese syntactic structures in terms of conceptual and functional principles, which are iconic and hence are easy to understand and apply. The organizational principles mainly comprise the three Chinese conceptual principles of Temporal Sequence, Temporal Scope, and Whole-Before-Part (Tai, 1985) and the two functional principles of Communicative Dynamism and the Principle of Topic-End Focus. By analyzing the semantic roles of each clause element, Chinese Syntactic Grammar reveals that the conceptual principles play a crucial role in organizing ideas and bringing units (such as subject, verb, and object) together to form grammatical sequences, which manifest S (A) V O (C), which is the basic Chinese word order. The functional principles control and govern variations of the basic sentence structure, which are motivated to facilitate effective communication and achieve specific communicative goals, thus generating several special structures, including the Bá/Bèi/null Bèi sentences, etc. The variant forms are motivated to achieve special communicative goals, and to facilitate effective communication. Another feature of the book is that it focuses on reasons, rather than merely on a description of rules. The language is lucid, and the arguments are cogent. The scope and depth of the investigation make the volume one of the most thorough and relatively complete pedagogical reference books. Chinese Syntactic Grammar can serve as a textbook for training professional CFL teachers. It is a must-read book for Mandarin Chinese teachers as a handy manual, also for intermediate and advanced Chinese learners if they want to have deeper insight into the nature of the Chinese language. Linguists who are interested in cognitive grammar and specialists across many fields including education, psychology, communication, and information science will find the book enlightening and interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study on the phenomenon of 'grammaticalization' and its manifestation in Chinese provides new insights into language change in Chinese and a large number of grammatical topics. Grammaticalization occurs in all of the world's languages. Xiu-Zhi Zoe Wu demonstrates general linguistic principles present and active in the phenomenon of grammaticalization whilst also describing the modelling of language in formal theoretical approaches to syntax; so this book fills two major gaps in the current study of linguistics. Grammaticalization and Language Change in Chinese illuminates how studies of language development and change provide special insights into the understanding of current, synchronic systems of language. Using patters from Chinese, the author establishes cross-linguistic generalizations about language change and grammaticalization. This book should be of great interest to Chinese linguists and readers interested in language change in different languages.

Book excerpt: Mandarin Chinese has become the official Chinese language after the 1911 revolution, it has been taught in schools for many decades and now virtually every educated Chinese can speak the language. Today, Mandarin Chinese is spoken throughout the country in China, a Western tourist in China will have no trouble communicating with the Chinese in Mandarin Chinese. Some distinctive features of mandarin Chinese: 1. Nouns Quantifiers. Unlike the English language, nouns in Mandarin Chinese need quantifiers, just like articles in English. This often becomes hurdles to be got over in learning Mandarin Chinese. In English, the words 'a, an' can be used to refer to almost any countable nouns, such as a student, a horse. a cow, a camel, a ring, a clock, a tree, and a hair. A is used to refer to the above nouns. On the other hand, however, in Mandarin Chinese the above nouns have their respective quantifiers. 2. Verbs In Verbal Tenses And Voices Remain Unchanged. Other Words, mostly adverbs, are used to indicate different tenses and voices. As an example, if you want to indicate past tense, you may use such words as in the past, yesterday, last year. If you want to indicate future tense, you may use such words as next year, tomorrow, one day, etc. In nouns, no distinction between singuar and plural nouns. The same character stands for both forms. In pronouns, no distinction between subject pronouns (1, he, it, she, we, you) and object pronouns (her, him, it, me, them, us, you). No distinction between singular and plural pronouns (this, these, that, those). 3. There Are Four Common Ways Of Asking Questions. First, use a negative word. This is like the short form of a tag question in English. Second, use interrogative pronouns: Who, Whom, Where, What . Unlike English, nouns in Mandarin Chinese need quantifiers, not unlike articles in English. This often becomes hurdles to be got over in learning Mandarin Chinese. A standard Noun quantifier contains three characters, including one number, one quantifier and one noun. When translated into English, there are three forms: (1) it contains only two words, namely, a number and a noun, but no quantifier, such as a dog; (2) it contains three words, namely, a number, a partitive as quantifier, and a noun, such as a dose of medicine or a packet of cigarettes.

With the increased popularity of learning Chinese as a second language, there is a demand for a guide to Chinese grammar that's targeted at second language learners. This four-volume set is one of the earliest and most influential works of Chinese grammar, with a special focus on teaching and learning Chinese as a second language. Drawing on rich teaching experience, the authors analyze a myriad of real-world examples to describe Chinese grammatical phenomena and rules while introducing the general grammar system of Chinese. In addition, the use of notional words in modern Chinese grammar is demonstrated, including nouns, pronouns, numerals, quantifiers, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Since the first edition came out in 1983, this set has been revised twice and has remained one of the best sellers in the field. Practitioners and scholars of teaching Chinese as a second language, as well as students with a basic knowledge of Chinese, will find it to be a handy reference.
