Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third, revised edition of Stuart Robson's highly successful guide to the grammar of the Javanese language, which is spoken by around 80,000,000 speakers on the island of Java. The book progresses from simple to more complex topics, facilitating a steady increase in language proficiency. Fresh examples have been added, as well as a section entitled "How Do You Say It In Javanese?" arranged under 120 headwords and taking the viewpoint of speakers of English wanting an equivalent to an English idiom. There is an introduction and a note on the language levels of Javanese, important for social interaction. The book will be of interest to students of Indonesian studies who want a deeper knowledge of communication on the island of Java, researchers considering fieldwork in Java, linguists making comparative studies of Indonesian languages, and outsiders undertaking employment in Java. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes how morphosyntactic structures and information flow characteristics are used by interlocutors in producing and understanding clauses in conversational Javanese, focusing on the Cirebon variety of the language. While some clauses display grammatical mechanisms used to code their structure explicitly and redundantly, many other clauses include few if any of these grammatical resources. These extremes mark a cline between the morphosyntactic and paratactic expression of clauses. The situation is thrown into relief by the frequency of unexpressed referents and conversationalists’ heavy reliance on shared experience and cultural knowledge. In all cases, pragmatic inference grounded in the interactional context is essential for establishing not only the discourse functions, but indeed also the very structure of clauses in conversational Javanese. This study contributes to our understanding of transitivity, emergent constituency, prosodic organization and the co-construction of meaning and structure by conversational interlocutors.

This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest and most extensive written language of Southeast Asia is Old Javanese, or Kawi. It is the oldest language in terms of written records, and the most extensive in the number and variety of its texts. Javanese literature has taken many forms. At various times, prose stories, sung poetry or other metrical types, chronicles, scientific, legal, and philosophical treatises, prayers, chants, songs, and folklore were all written down. Yet relatively few texts are available in English. The unstudied texts remaining are an unexplored record of Javanese culture as well as a language still alive as a literary medium in Bali. Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature represents a first step toward remedying the dearth of Old Javanese texts available to English-speaking students. The ideal teaching companion, this anthology offers transliterated original texts with facing-page English translations. Theanthology focuses on prose selections, since their straightforward style and syntax offer the beginning student the most rewarding experience. Four sections make up the collection. Part I offers several short readings as the most accessible entry point into Old Javanese. Part II contains two moralistic fables from an Old Javanese retelling of the Hindu Pañcatantra cycle. Part III takes up the epic, providing excerpts from one of the books of the Old Javanese retelling of the Mahābhārata. Part IV offers excerpts from two chronicles, the generic conventions of which challenge received notions of history writing because of their supernaturalism and folkloric elements. Includes introduction, glossary, and notes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the interface between syntax and its related components through in-depth investigation of a sizable portion of the grammar of Indonesian and Javanese. It can be read on two levels. Theoretically, it proposes the minimalist interface thesis that syntax-external linguistic interfaces are endowed with domain-specific operations (insertion, deletion, and type shifting) to legitimize an otherwise non-convergent result of the syntactic derivation for phonological and semantic interpretation. Empirically, the monograph substantiates this thesis from detailed analyses of four phenomena (reduplication, active voice morphology, P-stranding under sluicing, and nominal denotation). The study not only contains a wealth of new insights into comparative syntax from the perspective of Indonesian and Javanese, but also necessitates serious reconsideration of the common view of the interfaces as merely ornamental components of natural language grammar. The monograph should appeal to syntacticians, linguists interested in linguistic interfaces and the organization of grammar, and researchers on Austronesian languages.

Book excerpt: With regard to pragmatic structure, the findings seem to be consistent [sic.] the observations of other languages where reduced forms are used to encode given information whereas lexical noun phrases are used to encode new information. Given information tends to appear as the grammatical subject, whereas new information tends to appear as the grammatical object or oblique relations. The fact that new information tends to appear postverbally in different constructions shows that subjects seem to be related to continuity in discourse, whereas object and obliques seem to be related to discontinuity in discourse. Finally, Javanese seem to show a split in the parameter of whether the subject of an intransitive predicate is aligned with the agent or the patient of the transitive predicate.
