Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, , course: Public Administration, language: English, abstract: There are various aims behind the course of this study. The first objective is to highlight the reasons for government regulation on business management in Nigeria. Then, the study examines the role of government regulation in the development of business management in Nigeria and it analyzes the strategies used by government in regulating business management in Nigeria. The last objective is to examine the effects of government regulation on business management in Nigeria. A government formulates many rules and regulations that guide businesses. Businesses will normally change the way they operate according to the influence these rules and regulations have on the competitiveness and profitability of businesses. Business owners must comply with the regulations established by Federal, State and Local Government. Small business is facing many challenges nowadays, none of which are more forbidding than a burden. Federal government regulations and mandates threaten investment and stifle job growths. When the government imposes regulations on small businesses that drive up the cost of doing business, it’s like imposing a tax. A tax is a compulsory contribution to the state revenue which the government determines according to the workers’ income and business profit and which is also added to the cost of some goods, services and transactions. A government can implement a policy that can change the social behavior in the business environment. For instance, the existence of the Nigeria Breweries Plc operation under the company law regulating the activities of business enterprises is due to the fact that the following itemized law acts have been regulating the activities of this company with the motive of enhancing the social, political and economic growth and development of the country. Some of the agencies responsible for business regulations are the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), the Anti-Counterfeiting Collaboration (ACC), the Music Regulation of Nigeria (MRN) etc. Therefore, it is clear that the role of a government is to protect and represent the interest of the society and the citizenry in which business operates. It can be further said that a government through regulations protects consumers from abuse and ensures efficiency in the use of resources and promotes equitable distribution of income.

What of democratic sovereignty? In which cases has globalization been successfully resisted? These questions are confronted across an amazing sweep of the critical areas of business regulation--from contract, intellectual property and corporations law, to trade, telecommunications, labor standards, drugs, food, transport and environment. This book examines the role played by global institutions such as the World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, the OECD, IMF, Moodys and the World Bank, as well as various NGOs and significant individuals. Incorporating both history and analysis, Global Business Regulation will become the standard reference for readers in business, law, politics, and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. How was public policy and economic development in Nigeria affected under the period of military control between 1966 and 1999? What is the nature and scale of change that Nigeria will have to undergo in order to achieve its current development goals? Initially providing a history of Nigeria along with a framework for understanding the nature, scope and magnitude of the military and public management problems within the country, this timely and rewarding book addresses both of these questions. It analyzes the institutions that make and implement public policy in the Nigerian political arena, and examines the route that Nigeria could take in order to enhance its public management capacities. Although the specific focus is on Nigeria, the mode of analysis used is transferable to a wide variety of developing nations. The book will foster an understanding among scholars, development planners, military officers and policy makers of the tasks and challenges facing Nigeria and many sub-Saharan African nations in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough examination of the recent economic (mis-)fortunes of Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa, would reveal the unrealistic economic practice of depending on one major resource to fund the running of government, economic growth, and infrastructural development. This impractical approach to the management of the economy is magnified by the fact that Nigeria, as a country, is put in a precarious situation whenever there is a temporal or permanent price decline in the global crude oil market as this automatically translates to a reduction of the revenue available to government. This work is an attempt to present discussions into developing a Long-term and Strategic Economic Development Module for all regions and government in Nigeria. It is aimed at exposing Nigeria and Nigerians to the numerous benefits accruable in the development of its indigenous maritime economy. An attempt is made here to empirically rationalize the diversification of the Nigerian economy with its recent cabotage policies forming the foundation of an economy that emphasizes on shipping and associated mining and agricultural industries for the majority of its revenue. In order to justify this position, we undertake a careful analysis of the business histories of credible shipping companies like the precolonial Elder Dempster line and also the fast-growing Chinese auto manufacturing industries with a view to magnify their successes worthy of emulation. We have also compared some aspects of the US internal maritime structure with that of Nigeria and have exposed the practice of Japan in developing regions through the establishment of sea ports. It is intended that this book would serve as a personal and patriotic contribution to the Heads of Government as they strategize the reestablishment of Nigeria as the brightest investment destination in the global economic horizon in a bid to spark the recognition of our great nation as an emerging giant in the World Economic Order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an interdisciplinary exploration of the governance of public procurement reform in Africa. Through a bottom-up approach to case studies and comparative analyses, scholars, practitioners, and social activists write about the organizational mechanisms and implementation gaps in public procurement governance in light of the general premises of national reform. Reforming the ways in which government purchases works, goods, and services from the private sector is one of the most sweeping policy reform undertaken in Africa in the past decade. Despite the transnational scope of policy change, very little is known about the mechanisms of public procurement governance at the subnational level. The argument in this volume is that policy reforms that mitigate contractual hazards along the three-dimensional “law-politics-business matrix” are more likely to bring about meaningful institutional transformation and broader social accountability. Key to substantive transformation of public procurement is the revitalization and professionalization of the public sector to meet the opportunities and challenges of development by contract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteenth in a series of annual reports comparing business regulation in 190 economies, Doing Business 2019 measures aspects of regulation affecting 10 areas of everyday business activity: • Starting a business • Dealing with construction permits • Getting electricity • Registering property • Getting credit • Protecting minority investors • Paying taxes • Trading across borders • Enforcing contracts • Resolving insolvency These areas are included in the distance to frontier score and ease of doing business ranking. Doing Business also measures features of labor market regulation, which is not included in these two measures. This edition also presents the findings of the pilot indicator entitled 'Contracting with the Government,' which aims at benchmarking the efficiency, quality and transparency of public procurement systems worldwide. The report updates all indicators as of May 1, 2018, ranks economies on their overall 'ease of doing business', and analyzes reforms to business regulation -- identifying which economies are strengthening their business environment the most. Doing Business illustrates how reforms in business regulations are being used to analyze economic outcomes for domestic entrepreneurs and for the wider economy. It is a flagship product produced in partnership by the World Bank Group that garners worldwide attention on regulatory barriers to entrepreneurship. Almost 140 economies have used the Doing Business indicators to shape reform agendas and monitor improvements on the ground.

Book excerpt: A large amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) has been poured into Africa in recent decades and these investments can come with adverse effects on the environment, human rights, and development. At the same time, investment treaties, entered into by African states and aimed at promoting and protecting FDI, seriously limit those states' ability to regulate such activities in the interests of affected communities. Whilst these tensions have generated global debate, little attention has been paid to the legal status of many of these investment treaties, and whether - given their constitutional and customary international law obligations to act in the public interest - African states truly have the capacity to conclude treaties which contain standards of investment protection expressly preventing or unduly abridging the exercise of their regulatory authority. Focusing on this question, The Investment Treaty Regime and Public Interest Regulation in Africa presents The Imperatives Theory: a legal, normative, and principled framework for rethinking the legal status, making, and reform of investment treaties and investment dispute settlement in Africa, with relevant and significant implications for the global investment treaty regime.

It presents an agenda of reform as unfinished business.
