Book excerpt: Sarah is growing up fast. She swings on swings, slides down slides, and climbs trees. Whenever she falls, her mother sweeps her up in her arms and soothes away the hurt. Her mother is always there for her-on her first day of school, when she falls in love for the first time, and finally when she leaves home and starts a family of her own. It is then that Sarah realizes what a wonderful gift her mother has given her. As she watches over a daughter of her own, Sarah passes on that gift, helping her child through the trials of growing up with a gentle strength and enduring love. This beautiful testament to the powerful bond between mothers and daughters will move and inspire mothers while reassuring their daughters that they have a special safety net that will never let them down. Anna Strauss was only sixteen-years-old when she was inspired to write this story as a gift for her mother. Now her enchanting story makes a perfect gift to celebrate the special mother/daughter bond on Mother's Day, Graduation Day, and all year round.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada and the Middle East: In Theory and Practice provides a unique perspective on one of the world’s most geopolitically important regions. From the perspective of Canada’s diplomats, academics, and former policy practitioners involved in the region, the book offers an overview of Canada’s relationship with the Middle East and the challenges Canada faces there. The contributors examine Canada’s efforts to promote its interests and values—peace building, peacekeeping, multiculturalism, and multilateralism, for example—and investigate the views of interested communities on Canada’s relations with countries of the Middle East. Canada and the Middle East will be useful to academics and students studying the Middle East, Canadian foreign policy, and international relations. It will also serve as a primer for Canadian companies investing in the Middle East and a helpful reference for Canada’s foreign service and journalists stationed abroad by providing a background to Canadas interestsand role in the region. His treatment is not restricted to the familiar totalitarian ideologies of communism and nazism, but also includes conservatism, liberalism and nationalism. The focus and emphasis given to ideology in an historical survey of such broad scope make this book unusual, and even controversial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malnutrition caused by deficiencies of vitamins and minerals - also called hidden hunger - impairs both the intellectual and physical development of a child. Due to the absence of clinical symptoms and assessments, no intervention can be staged. The tragedy is that this, in turn, decreases the child’s chance to escape from poverty. This book looks at malnutrition in high-income countries, the nutrition transition and nutritional deficiencies in low-income countries, consequences of hidden hunger, and interventions to improve nutrition security. Written by leading experts in the field, it clearly stresses that national governments and international organizations must make malnutrition one of their top priorities in order to provide children with optimal conditions for a healthy future.

Book excerpt: This book was designed as a collaborative effort to satisfy a long-felt need to pull together many important but separate inquiries into the nature and impact of inequality in colonial and revolutionary America. It also honors the scholarship of Gary Nash, who has contributed much of the leading work in this field. The 15 contributors, who constitute a Who's Who of those who have made important discoveries and reinterpretations of this issue, include Mary Beth Norton on women's legal inequality in early America; Neal Salisbury on Puritan missionaries and Native Americans; Laurel Thatcher Ulrich on elite and poor women's work in early Boston; Peter Wood and Philip Morgan on early American slavery; as well as Gary Nash himself writing on Indian/white history. This book is a vital contribution to American self-understanding and to historical analysis.

Book excerpt: Close your eyes, my baby. This too shall pass. Hush the hurt, my heart. Tears may fall, but I am here, so hush. Hush is the story of a motherâs love, unyielding over the years. Sara is a happy little girl â like most kids she has not a care in the world. But every now and then she finds herself feeling less than happy -sometimes sad, sometimes hurt. Who can she turn to? Mom. A mom is always there with a hug and soothing words to make everything better, really as only a mother can. Now Sara is growing up and will soon leave her mother to start a life of her own. Will teenage Sara still seek the comfort of mom when life takes its turns? And what will grown-up Sara do when her own daughter suffers childhoodâs bumps and bruises? With dynamic colour illustrations, Hush is a wonderfully poetic dedication to that unique everlasting bond between mother and child.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume paints a general picture of the environmental situation in Asia, backing it up with several case studies. Two major points are made in this general picture. The first is that environmental campaigns in Asia tend to have a local focus; they react to very concrete problems in the immediate neighbourhood and as such usually people are engaged in a cause for practical rather than idealistic reasons. Such can be seen in case studies from the volume dealing with campaigns against logging and tree plantations, tourist facilities and factories and in support or defence of nature reserves. This pattern is in marked contrast to the profile of the most successful Western movements (in terms of fund-raising at least) for whom the focus is on perceived problems in distant parts of the world. The second point is evidence in several of the case studies in the volume, namely that environmental campaigns cannot be understood in terms of environmental issues alone. Rather, they should be regarded as a form of cultural critique and frequently are a form of political resistance in situations where open political action is too risky.

Book excerpt: This book focuses at the margins of adult education, work and civil society. Rather than focusing on active participants and active participation, the objective is to scrutinize the whole adult population in terms of participation, and to pay special attention to those who are so easily left out of studies concerning adult education, learning at work or active participation in civil society. The aim of the book is to bring into the discussion the views of those who do not find attending adult education possible and who thus form a challenge for the promotion of active citizenship. In the collection of articles researchers from various disciplines and with cross-disciplinary interests in adult education and marginalisation meet and discuss with each other within and beyond their own disciplines.
