Book excerpt: Many churches are switching to the multisite or multiservice models to manage crowded sanctuaries due to growing attendance. This solution seems sensible in the short term, but too often churches adopt this model without taking into consideration what the Bible says about it. Illuminating the importance of physical togetherness as a way to protect the gospel, this book argues that maintaining a single assembly best embodies the unity the church possesses in Jesus Christ. Jonathan Leeman considers a series of biblical, theological, and pastoral arguments that ask us to stop and examine intuitions or assumptions about what a church is. He reorients our minds to a biblical definition of church, offering examples of churches that have thrived with a single service at a single site and compelling alternatives for those looking to solve the complications that come with a growing church.

Book excerpt: The 1906 earthquake of Pentecostalism at the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles, California, sent a jolt to Washington, DC, during 1906–1907. This Washington, DC, shock wave began when a group of women read and acted upon reports in the Azusa Street Mission’s Apostolic Faith newspaper. This event resulted in the creation and development of an influential church in the District of Columbia, Full Gospel Assembly. In a well-researched examination of a little-recognized and nearly forgotten religious community in Washington, DC, retired United States Army chaplain Don Kammer explores the church’s beginnings as part of the early twentieth-century Pentecostal and Charismatic revival. Full Gospel Assembly was an example of an early Pentecostal-evangelistic fusion, a common element in today’s American evangelical religion. Kammer identifies the challenges, successes, and the impact on the surrounding DC community. As he leads others through FGA’s fascinating history, Kammer explains why the story of FGA is important, reflects upon the conflicted definitions of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity, describes popular malign portraits of holy rollers and tongue talkers, tells the tales of meetings on the Electric Street Railway Line, in theaters, in Parlor Houses, identifies denominational influence, and much more. The Full Gospel Assembly (FGA) of Washington, DC, 1907–1934 is a fascinating and comprehensive examination of the neglected history of an early twentieth-century revival with ties to the 1906 Azusa Street Mission and revival.

The Prophet Daniel was told, ..".when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people" (Daniel 8:23-24 KJV). Is it possible that a radical terrorist leader, riding the wind of extreme religious fervor, would be this king of fierce countenance and stir up the storm of Armageddon? Will there ever be peace in the Middle East? Are there radical elements within the Islamic people who figure into Christian prophecies of end-time events? It is hard to conceive of an Israel-centered Battle of Armageddon without including radical Muslim forces in the scenario. But what does the Bible say, and are these days upon us? Is it possible that so great a religion, so moved with passion against Judaism and Christianity, so outspoken on the issue of peace in the Middle East, so dominant in the lands of the Bible, could have arisen without the prophecies of the Bible even taking note of it? This book answers those questions-biblically and historically. This is a book for Christians; it is not against Islam or any other religion. It certainly isn't intended as an attack on any ideology, nor is it designed to insult anyone's faith. Rather, it is a statement of Christian faith. It attempts to explain the Islamic religion as it relates to the Christian Bible. But it does proceed from the presupposition that the Bible is true, and that Christianity is the way to eternal life. It is not designed to be mere hateful ranting against Islam, so much as it is meekly relating what the Bible says. True Christianity has no room for hate, bigotry, or prejudice. But our Bible does have a message for Christians and tells us about the role of extremist followers of radical Islam in future events and how we should prepare for events to come. Dr. Glenn Goodwin is the pastor of the Gospel Assembly Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Formerly a trial attorney, he earned his Juris Doctorate degree with honors from Drake University in Des Moines and his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Theology from the International Seminary in Plymouth, Florida. He is blessed with a wonderful family, including his wife, three married children, and five granddaughters.

Book excerpt: "A Christian without a church is a Christian in trouble." Since a global pandemic abruptly closed places of worship, many Christians have skipped church life, even neglecting virtual services. But this was a trend even before COVID-19. Polarizing issues, including political and racial strife, convinced some people to pull away from the church and one another. Now it's time to recommit to gathering as brothers and sisters in Christ. In Rediscover Church, Collin Hansen and Jonathan Leeman discuss why church is essential for believers and God's mission. Through biblical references and personal stories, they show readers God's true intention for corporate gathering: to spiritually strengthen members as individuals and the body of Christ. In an age of church-shopping and livestreamed services, rediscover why the future of the church relies on believers gathering regularly as the family of God. Published in partnership with the Gospel Coalition and 9Marks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of God is to establish Christ—and not just the personal Christ but also the corporate Christ, which is the Church: “as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is the Christ” (1 Cor. 12.12 Darby). The work of the Holy Spirit in these past two thousand years has been centered on building this body of Christ. We will fail God in seeing His purpose and fail the Holy Spirit in cooperating with His work if we are not “holding fast the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and bands, increaseth with the increase of God” (Col. 2.19). The body of Christ is not only most spiritual but also most practical. It is an earthly testimony as well as a heavenly body. All its spiritual principles must be and can be practiced in a local assembly. Here in these pages, therefore, we shall find that Watchman Nee shares with us the practical aspects of the assembly life. He touches on such practical matters as authority in the church, ministry in the church, church fellowship, church meetings, and the boundary of a local assembly. It is important for the reader to remember that this volume emphasizes only the practical side of the Church, and hence concentrates on the life of the local assembly. There is another side of the Church—that of the spiritual principles inherent in the Church universal—which is not the subject of this book. To maintain the right balance and to obtain the whole concept of the Church, both the principle and the practice, both the universal and the local, must be received and kept. For it must never be forgotten that a new wine-skin is for containing the new wine; and therefore the first without the second is meaningless. May the Head of the Church find himself expressed corporately among His people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churches over the past generations have been weakened by a failure to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of their communities. Many have adopted a narrow vision, focusing on only one aspect of ministry. But in today's environment of faith-based opportunities many Christians are eager to start reaching out to their world with both Good News and good works, and therefore they are searching for appropriate ways to integrate both into their ministry. In Churches That Make a Difference, best-selling author Ron Sider and his coauthors give those involved in community outreach a comprehensive resource for developing holistic ministry--a balance of evangelism and social outreach. Illustrations and helpful organizational tips detail the how-to's of an effective holistic ministry. Case studies that show how different churches across the United States reach out to their communities provide a variety of ideas and practical applications. User-friendly tools are included as well for congregational studies, surveys, evaluations, and community assessments. The authors draw on extensive experience with church ministries and faith-based organizations as they share the life-changing vision and biblical mandate for living the whole gospel. Church leaders will be encouraged in their process of developing and maintaining a holistic ministry, and local churches will rediscover a passion for loving the whole person the way Jesus did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the church? What does it look like? What should it look like? For answers to these questions David Alan Black looks to the first century church and our founding documents in the New Testament. What were the characteristics of a Christian assembly in the first century? In his study he finds seven things that defined the church then: Evangelistic Preaching, Christian Baptism, Apostolic Teaching, Genuine Relationships, Christ-Centered Gatherings, Fervent Prayer, and Sacrificial Living. Dr. Black believes each of these things should characterize our twenty-first century churches as well. And that is the challenge. How can we apply these principles in our own lives and church congregations? This brief book won't answer all your questions. What it will do is point you toward the right way to find the answers. Ultimately, Dave Black believes that “the more we understand the Scriptures, the more we understand our responsibility to submit our lives and our futures to its radical teachings.” This is the challenge. Will you answer it?

Book excerpt: Realizing that God must gain the church as a corporate expression of Christ and not just individual, overcoming Christians, Watchman Nee presents practical fellowship in The Assembly Life that is directed toward fitly framing the believers who live within a particular locality into a living, spiritual, and practical dwelling place of God. In a world that is desperately in need of Him, God often seems limited in His operation and frustrated in His purpose. Despite the ever-present needs, there is no limitation in His ability. There is, however, a limitation in His willingness to work without the full cooperation of the church through prayer. The prayer of the church lays the tracks upon which God moves to fulfill His eternal purpose. In The Prayer Ministry of the Church, Watchman Nee presents the biblical principles involved in the type of prayer that can bind on earth what has been bound in Heaven and loose on earth what has been loosed in Heaven. Through the prayer of the church every limitation and frustration to the fulfillment of God's will can be effectively overcome.
