Book excerpt: “Tender and artful . . . a gently spiritual celebration of life.” —New York Times Book Review Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Francine Prose weaves an ingenious, darkly humorous, and brilliantly observant story that follows the exploits and intrigue of a constellation of characters affiliated with an off-off-off-off Broadway children’s musical Mister Monkey—a screwball children’s musical about a playfully larcenous pet chimpanzee—is the kind of family favorite that survives far past its prime. Margot, who plays the chimp’s lawyer, knows the production is dreadful and bemoans the failure of her acting career. She’s settled into the drudgery of playing a humiliating part—until the day she receives a mysterious letter from an anonymous admirer . . . and later, in the middle of a performance, has a shocking encounter with Adam, the twelve-year-old who plays the title role. Francine Prose’s effervescent comedy is told from the viewpoints of wildly unreliable, seemingly disparate characters whose lives become deeply connected as the madcap narrative unfolds. There is Adam, whose looming adolescence informs his interpretation of his role; Edward, a young audience member who is candidly unimpressed with the play; Ray, the author of the novel on which the musical is based, who witnesses one of the most awkward first dates in literature; and even the eponymous Mister Monkey, the Monkey God himself. With her trademark wit and verve, Prose delves into humanity’s most profound mysteries: art, ambition, childhood, aging, and love. Startling and captivating, Mister Monkey is a breathtaking novel from a writer at the height of her craft.

Book excerpt: Can a chimp-breeding farmer and a chimp with human intelligence take over the planet? Not a Planet of the Apes knockoff. Very realistic. First person, near future, heroic fantasy, light sci-fi, plenty of action. Unique. Very clean language. I will never waste your time with thinly disguised soft porn. Not politically incorrect. But some of it is well into the shades of grey. For that, parental discretion is advised. A few pages are must read for real space colonization info (I am a moon nationalist). A lot of ideas for deep thinking. Some weird humor. Neopup fiction at its finest! More novels to come as soon as sales pay for it. I wrote this novel for it to be the best fiction book I ever read (my opinion). Most successful authors would make a trilogy plus out of this story. I will never publish anything I do not think is, at least, half as good. I do not do bland; I do different. Expect it from me.

Book excerpt: The remarkable story of a "talking" chimp, a leading scientist, and the profound insights they have uncovered about our species He has been featured in cover stories in Time, Newsweek, and National Geographic, and has been the subject of a "NOVA" documentary. He is directly responsible for discoveries that have forced the scientific community to recast its thinking about the nature of the mind and the origins of language. He is Kanzi, an extraordinary bonobo chimpanzee who has overturned the idea that symbolic language is unique to our species. This is the moving story of how Kanzi learned to converse with humans and the profound lessons he has taught us about our animal cousins, and ourselves. " . . . The underlying thesis is informative and well argued . . . Savage-Rumbaugh's results are impressive." — The Washington Post "This popular, absorbing, and controversial account is recommended." — Library Journal
