Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Romantic period, Hannah Cowley (1743–1809) achieved fame both as a playwright and a poet, composing popular comedies and, as Anna Matilda, amorous Della Cruscan verse. But despite a recent surge of scholarly interest in her works, her controversial comedy The World as It Goes; or A Party at Montpelier (performed 1781) has never been published. During its premiere, audience members loudly objected to the play’s bawdy content, and it closed after a single performance. The comedy’s catastrophic failure provides insights into the theatrical tastes, anxieties and mores of late eighteenth-century audiences and influenced the manner in which Cowley handled controversial issues in her subsequent plays. This edition of The World as It Goes is based on the Larpent licensing holograph manuscript held by the Huntington Library (LA 548). The transcription of the play is supplemented with an introduction providing cultural, theatrical, historical and biographical contexts; contemporaneous reviews; and a note on the text.

Book excerpt: “Some memories live in hearts and minds even though miles and years come between”—and for the author, she not only has memories to share, but a history to tell. Born and raised in the island of Saipan in Northern Marianas, Marie S. C. Castro (Miss Soledad) witnessed the transition of an idyllic community into a land of terror and poverty as the Japanese soldiers invaded her homeland. But rather than just tales of adversity in the hands of the Japanese invaders and the horrors of war, she showcases stories of bravery, faith, and hope as she, her people, and the American soldiers battle for survival, freedom, and restoration of not only their beloved community, but also of their own lives and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cage's disdain for records was legendary. He repeatedly spoke of the ways in which recorded music was antithetical to his work. In Records Ruin the Landscape, David Grubbs argues that, following Cage, new genres in experimental and avant-garde music in the 1960s were particularly ill suited to be represented in the form of a recording. These activities include indeterminate music, long-duration minimalism, text scores, happenings, live electronic music, free jazz, and free improvisation. How could these proudly evanescent performance practices have been adequately represented on an LP? In their day, few of these works circulated in recorded form. By contrast, contemporary listeners can encounter this music not only through a flood of LP and CD releases of archival recordings but also in even greater volume through Internet file sharing and online resources. Present-day listeners are coming to know that era's experimental music through the recorded artifacts of composers and musicians who largely disavowed recordings. In Records Ruin the Landscape, Grubbs surveys a musical landscape marked by altered listening practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The friendship between Young Brydell and Grubb the marine came about in this way. One morning in May, just after Admiral Beaumont had finished the beautiful toilet he made at precisely eight o'clock every morning, he threw wide his bedroom shutters to see if the toilet of the navy yard grounds had been made too. The admiral was the tenderest-hearted old fellow in the world, but the strictest sort of martial law prevailed in the matter of tidiness in every part of the navy yard over which he exercised or could claim jurisdiction. As for the small boys at the yard, they harrowed the admiral's kind soul to that degree that he gloomily declared he would have the flag half-masted and make the band play a dirge before the very next house in which a boy baby was born. Nevertheless, he had been known more than once to have begged small boys off from the avenging birch switch. To this general antagonism to small boys one exception was made—Young Brydell. He was called Young Brydell because, young as his father, the ensign, was, the boy was actually twenty years younger—being nine, and a beautiful, terrible, lovable imp. Perhaps it was because Young Brydell had no mother that the admiral and everybody else, except Aunt Emeline, winked at the mischief in which he reveled. When Young Brydell drew his first breath his mother had drawn her last—and so from the beginning a tender atmosphere of love and pity seemed to surround him.

Book excerpt: In this savage tale of love, greed, and redemption in America's early frontier famed lawman, Jon Stoudenmire, is on a quest to find peace at his vineyard paradise. Near his journey's end and anxious to settle down with his true love Elizabeth Thompson, Jon meets up with his long-lost cousin Cliff Stone. Stone asks Jon to stay and join his fight against greedy gold mining magnate George Stanton. Reluctant at first, after a shootout with one of Stanton's hired guns, Jon joins the fight. Stanton's senseless beating of lovely hotel owner Maggie Callahan only intensifies Jon's resolve. Faced with an angry Jon Stoudenmire, a desperate Stanton brings in a small army of hired guns to try and take him out. The resulting war shatters the myth of invincibility that had grown around Stanton and exposes the inner demons that drive the charming, yet conflicted gunman Jon Stoudenmire. About the Author An avid student of America's early frontier, R B Conroy has turned his passion into another compelling novel, Return of the Gun. Return is his second novel and a stand alone sequel to his popular first novel Devil Rising. In addition to the books mentioned above, Conroy has also written short stories about America's west. He resides in Leesburg, Indiana with his wife Cheryl, where he's hard at work on his next project.
