Book excerpt: If most of us want to be good, how is it that many of us can seem so bad? Drawing on the disciplines of brain science, management, moral philosophy, public policy, and psychology—and filled with original research, surveys, and case studies, Good vs Good explains how we each prioritize the 8 Great Goods in completely disparate order. In surveys of over 2000 Americans, 1750 gave a unique sequence for their Goods. Yet, when we encounter people with whom we do not share the same prioritization of Goods, our natural inclination is to resist them and their views; leading to boardroom coups, family spats, and lovers’ quarrels. We may even find those who look at the world in divergent ways as somehow evil. The most important conflicts in human history (Cambodia’s Killing Fields, Islamic Jihads, civil wars and even presidential elections) are all about how we prioritize the Eight Great Goods. The way we rank the 8 Goods—explicit or unspoken—determines who we are and what we will become as individuals, organizations, and nations. So for anyone who is a national leader, an organizational manager or just trying to get along with co-workers or family members, Good vs Good offers insights into what is going on in our minds and in the minds of others. More importantly, this book gives readers a step-by-step game plan for how to bridge the gulf between the Goods and each other. Good vs Good shows us how our differences can actually build understanding and create solutions that may permanently improve our lives and the world around us.

Book excerpt: Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence? Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities. The economic success thus spurred was sustained because the government became accountable and responsive to citizens and the great mass of people. Sadly, the people of the north have endured decades of famine, political repression, and very different economic institutions—with no end in sight. The differences between the Koreas is due to the politics that created these completely different institutional trajectories. Based on fifteen years of original research Acemoglu and Robinson marshall extraordinary historical evidence from the Roman Empire, the Mayan city-states, medieval Venice, the Soviet Union, Latin America, England, Europe, the United States, and Africa to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: - China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? - Are America’s best days behind it? Are we moving from a virtuous circle in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? - What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? More philanthropy from the wealthy nations of the West? Or learning the hard-won lessons of Acemoglu and Robinson’s breakthrough ideas on the interplay between inclusive political and economic institutions? Why Nations Fail will change the way you look at—and understand—the world.

Book excerpt: The Challenge Built to Last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the verybeginning. But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness? The Study For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great? The Standards Using tough benchmarks, Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world's greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck. The Comparisons The research team contrasted the good-to-great companies with a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. What was different? Why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good? Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness -- why some companies make the leap and others don't. The Findings The findings of the Good to Great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. The findings include: Level 5 Leaders: The research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness. The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence. A Culture of Discipline: When you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great results. Technology Accelerators: Good-to-great companies think differently about the role of technology. The Flywheel and the Doom Loop: Those who launch radical change programs and wrenching restructurings will almost certainly fail to make the leap. “Some of the key concepts discerned in the study,” comments Jim Collins, "fly in the face of our modern business culture and will, quite frankly, upset some people.” Perhaps, but who can afford to ignore these findings?

While foster families and teachers dismiss Nova as severely autistic and nonverbal, Bridget understands how intelligent and special Nova is, and all that she can't express. As the liftoff draws closer, Nova's new foster family and teachers begin to see her potential, and for the first time, she is making friends without Bridget. But every day, she's counting down to the launch, and to the moment when she'll see Bridget again. Because Bridget said, "No matter what, I'll be there. I promise."

Book excerpt: God is there to save you from harm. The devil can’t take no more then you can’t ever have in life on what you can have is yours in life who stands by the great waterfalls of life stands for ups and downs everything is meant for a reason because you wonder why your life is so block from others because something maybe missing in order to put common sense together which was unsaid and done that needs to be done. so you cherish the memory of that day of your life every stone you can ever take and every breath in your body, give it to god and glory and take a deep breath and praise God. Trials must be mistaken because whatever you do or whatever you did, it must be something or what you did needs to be fixed and prepared of a dislike compare to or a distance. A distance is a challenge, of course, or a state of mind. What people do for a living is the unit of life. It’s the bad things that you do that makes trials go wrong and bad rather then right. One way it is or another, and one way it doesn’t. What you do or what you don’t do, you pick up the pieces of the puzzles and get it right on time, on the dot and line, and you take a piece of the pie—what you like and dislike and show and prove the way you want it. You talk about the good old times, and sometimes, it’s about the wrong times of your life and the things you did in the past, whether it be good or bad in your wildest dream life. You take that and swipe your shoulders off. The greater it is, the badder it maybe. It can be fixable that same day or a couple of days a head. Trouble don’t last always and not for long. That’s how it works and what should be done, and you take it and fix everything that has been broken. You stand forward to that and be strong and have strength, and whatever that needs to be done and whatever that it is you can’t do, you don’t have to do it or put up with it. Be yourself and do all that you can do as possible, and that’s all you can do. You cannot please everyone because it’s gonna have a passing moment when you can do something or not and you will be tired of it. It also includes fatal attraction, breaking relationships, tragedies, boo thangs, lover and friends, blessings, curses, magic spells, cast of spells, Buddhism, voodoo, and many more.

Book excerpt: Do you sometimes feel . . . Down, depressed, or unhappy? Anxious, panicky, or insecure? Guilty, inadequate, or worthless? Lonely, unwanted, or alone? For decades, we've been told that "negative" feelings like depression and anxiety are the result of what's wrong with us, which creates feelings of shame and makes it sound like we're broken and need to be "fixed." But what if we have it all backwards? What if our negative moods do not result from what's wrong with us but, rather, what's right with us? This is the revolutionary mind shift you will find in Feeling Great. Written by Dr. David Burns, a pioneer of cognitive therapy and author of the national bestseller Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, this book describes a groundbreaking high-speed treatment for depression and anxiety based on one simple notion: Our struggles actually reflect what is most beautiful about us. And when we can see our negative thoughts and feelings from this radically different perspective, recovery becomes possible--sometimes even in the blink of an eye! Based on Dr. Burns's 40+ years of research and more than 40,000 hours treating individuals with severe mood issues, Feeling Great is filled with inspiring real-life case studies and more than 50 actionable tools to crush the negative thoughts that rob you of happiness and self-esteem. You can change the way you feel. In fact, you owe it to yourself to feel GREAT!

Book excerpt: The truth is we are all just a little bit crazy in some areas of our life to a whole lot of crazy. Being miss-directed is one of the things mankind has in common as the various forms of insanity work the same way in every one of us. Weve all been programmed to unknowingly believe in a host of lies and its our belief in the need to uphold the lies that do us in. There are laws that pertain to the universe. These laws cannot be broken without creating diverse consequences. With every action there is an opposite reaction of effect. And where do the decisions we make come from? They generally come from our minds. The question then becomes, Whos controlling the mind? If your mind is at work and in agreement with you then you would rightly say you are controlling your mind. But if you occasionally find that your mind is working against you then you should consider you are not solely in control. Jesus referred to Satan as, the father of lies. I intend to show how the workings of evil are constructed through the placement of lies and how these lies in combination are at work to disrupt our lives. I will show how the longest and greatest lie is packaged and how the six major steps that makes up a combined package works powerfully against you. Then I will show how the effects from the lies get all mixed in with the pain you experience and how the end results can be devastating. This book is about our need for revelation and offers the reader an opportunity to begin a personal journey with life as it truly is. This is a lifelong journey in Spirit and truth and it begins with your full recognition of the need for having God working continuously in your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: Harry Potter is a heptalogy of fantasy novels by the English author Joanne K. Rowling about an adolescent boy named Harry Potter, first published in England in 1997. Harry Potter attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a boarding school for young wizards and witches. Up to his eleventh birthday his cruel relatives, the Dursleys, have raised the orphaned Harry. On this day he learns that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwarts. The story is mostly set on the school premises, with each of the seven volumes describing a school year at Hogwarts and a year of Harry's growing-up. The main topic is Harry Potter's fight against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort who killed Harry's parents when he was still an infant. Throughout the story the Dark Lord Voldemort gains more and more power and tries to kill Harry several times. In Hallows the climax is reached and the final battle between Harry and Lord Voldemort which will decide the future of the wizarding world. The fight of good versus evil is one of the oldest topics of mankind. Starting with the original sin in the Garden of Eden this fight has dominated moral concepts of the Christian world ever since. This paper presents an analysis of how good and evil are portrayed and presented in the Harry Potter series. First, there is a description of Christian motifs in the series and how these motifs can be compared to certain characters in the books. Second, 'good' characters such as Harry's close friends Ron and Hermione, and Harry's mentor, Professor Dumbledore, are described and characterised as to why they are part of the 'good'. Third, the 'evil' opponents Draco Malfoy and the evil Dark Lord Voldemort are analysed as to how they exhibit 'evil' behaviour. The last chapter deals with the question of whether Harry Potter is 'good' or 'evil' as he does not always act as an exemplary student.
