Book excerpt: On a bright, sunny day, a Transvaal passenger aircraft was on the last of its several trips across Zambia. The flight had, thus far, been largely uneventful when, suddenly, pure-white light appeared in front of the aircraft and moved to swallow it up. In mere seconds, the aircraft, its crew, and its passengers were surrounded by the light. Abruptly the aircraft rose vertically into the sky. An extensive air, land, and sea search of Zambia and the surrounding countries proved to be in vain. The aircraft and all the people in it had simply disappeared. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Brazil, a country well-known for UFO sightings, a Brazilian passenger aircraft disappeared into the heavens. This time, however, the bodies of the missing were returned. Neatly arranged bodies were placed in multiple rows. When they were discovered, the horror became evident—all the internal organs had been removed. A young girl was left alive to give testament to the horrific acts of desecration. In response to the alien threat over the years, a top secret organization known as Space Command was established within the United States Navy. During the following years, Space Command armed itself with advanced weaponry and was staffed with the best of the best. Its new commander, Rear Admiral Michael Scott, had experience with the alien threat and was committed, as were the men and women of Space Command, to beat the threat back and defeat the aliens no matter the cost. No stone would be left unturned in their determination. It’s now time to buckle your seat belts as you, the reader, are about to embark on an international adventure fraught with danger, passion, and a willingness to save Earth.

Book excerpt: His eyes are on the one eye of the rifle. His mouth splits open his brown beard. He throws up a hand, palm outward, in an unwilled, futile gesture to ward off death. A killer is hounding the seaside town of Old Tornwich. Residents are gripped by fear and suspicion, and the finger of blame is pointed in all directions. But the bodies keep falling and the crimes remain unsolved, the culprit at large. No mere whodunnit, The Suburbs of Hell—its story inspired by a real-life serial killer—is a profoundly disturbing psychological drama with a devastating conclusion, the final work of one of Australia’s greatest writers. Julian Randolph 'Mick' Stow was born in Geraldton, Western Australia, in 1935. He attended local schools before boarding at Guildford Grammar in Perth, where the renowned author Kenneth Mackenzie had been a student. While at university he sent his poems to a British publisher. The resulting collection, Act One, won the Australian Literature Society’s Gold Medal in 1957—as did the prolific young writer's third novel, To the Islands, the following year. To the Islands also won the 1958 Miles Franklin Literary Award. Stow reworked the novel for a second edition almost twenty-five years later, but never allowed its two predecessors to be republished. He worked briefly as an anthropologist’s assistant in New Guinea—an experience that subsequently informed Visitants, one of three masterful late novels—then fell seriously ill and returned to Australia. In the 1960s he lectured at universities in Australia and England, and lived in America on a Harkness fellowship. He published his second collection of verse, Outrider; the novel Tourmaline, on which critical opinion was divided; and his most popular fiction, The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea and Midnite. For years afterwards Stow produced mainly poetry, libretti and reviews. In 1969 he settled permanently in England: first in Suffolk, then in Essex, where he moved in 1981. He received the 1979 Patrick White Award. Randolph Stow died in 2010, aged seventy-four. A private man, a prodigiously gifted yet intermittently silent author, he has been hailed as ‘the least visible figure of that great twentieth-century triumvirate of Australian novelists whose other members are Patrick White and Christina Stead’. Praise for The Suburbs of Hell ‘Both a traditional murder mystery and a meditation on the random depredations of death.’ Australian Book Review ‘Poetic accuracy is only one aspect of a rich talent...Mr Stow has a narrative gift as well...He is, in fact a real novelist.’ Observer ‘A cleverly crafted whodunit... Stow is an example of the high calibre of Australian writers of yesterday. Many of these authors have been forgotten or perhaps overlooked. It’s pleasing to see that Text Publishing released this edition in 2015 and continue to foster some of Australia’s buried talents by re-publishing under Text Classics. For fans of the psychological thriller and those readers who enjoy a foray into a metaphorical tale, Stow delivers the goods.’ Salty Popcorn

Book excerpt: The year is 2140, and Expedition 1 has safely left Earth for its projected forty-year-long mission to the planet Harmonia, in hopes of settling a colony there. Humans have depleted almost all of Earth’s resources and now are on the verge of self-destruction. Although attempts have been made to restore the Earth’s ecological balance, the fate of the entire human race rests in the hands of this mission. Carrying 1000 humans in a quasi-frozen state and piloted by Captain Pierre De Grandpré and his crew, Expedition 1 is the largest and most technologically advanced spaceship of its kind. But just because it is the most capable of completing its task doesn’t mean there aren’t others who secretly want to get to Harmonia first and claim the best spot for themselves—others willing to do whatever it takes to stop Expedition 1. Soon, Expedition 1’s crew find themselves trying to defend against a vicious, devious enemy attempting to destroy them. Wondering how the enemy keeps disrupting their mission so easily, crew members begin to lose trust in one another. Is there a spy among them? If so, who? As Captain De Grandpré does everything he can to bring together the highly skilled individuals forming his crew, his vision grows ever clearer: arrive at Harmonia first before it falls into the wrong hands . . . Full of spellbinding, edge-of-your-seat moments, From Terra to Harmonia: Out of the Sun is the first book in the From Terra to Harmonia trilogy.
