Book excerpt: With the Australian troops crossing of the Kumusi River in mid-November 1942, after pushing the Japanese back along the Kokoda Track to the north coast of Papua New Guinea, the time had come to face the entrenched Japanese at their beachheads at Gona, Sanananda and Buna. The Japanese were determined to fight to the last man in the defence of these critical positions. The first beach to be captured by the Australians was Gona, which fell on 9 December after bitter fighting. This, however, was not the end of the fighting around this beachhead as just west of Gona, on the opposite side of Gona Creek a larger Japanese Force had been landed which was intent on not only reinforcing Gona, but also Sanananda and Buna, both located east of Gona. The fighting west of Gona Creek would be just a brutal and deadly as the fighting to take the Gona Beachhead. Even so, after this fighting Australian and American troops, operating together for the first time in the Pacific War, were still bogged down in the battles to take Sanananda and Buna, the fighting at these beachheads would continue into January 1943.

Since that time, the theatres of Broadway have staged hundreds of musicals--some more noteworthy than others, but all in their own way a part of American theatre history. With more than 750 entries, this comprehensive reference work provides information on every musical produced on Broadway since Oklahoma's 1943 debut. Each entry begins with a brief synopsis of the show, followed by a three-part history: first, the pre-Broadway story of the show, including out-of-town try-outs and Broadway previews; next, the Broadway run itself, with dates, theatres, and cast and crew, including replacements, chorus and understudies, songs, gossip, and notes on reviews and awards; and finally, post-Broadway information with a detailed list of later notable productions, along with important reviews and awards.

Book excerpt: This volume contributes rich, new material to provide insights into indigenous responses to the colonial empires of Great Britain (South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe (Rhodesia)) and Germany (Namibia) and explore the complex intellectual, cultural, literary, and political borders and identities that emerged across these spaces. Contributors include distinguished global scholars in the field as well as exciting young scholars. The essays link global-national-local forces in history by analysing how indigenous elites not only interacted with colonial empires to absorb, adapt and re-cast new ideas, forms of discourse, and social formations, but also networked with ordinary people to forge new social, ethnic, and political identities and viable social forces. Translated and other primary texts in appendices add to the insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Pulitzer Prize–nominated classic is “one of the most authentic and moving depictions of a woman’s identity and experience” (Appalachian Journal). With her 1926 debut novel, Kentucky writer and poet Elizabeth Madox Roberts delivers a poignant look at a young girl’s coming of age on the farms where her family toils. Ellen Chesser is used to life on the rural roads of Kentucky, traveling from place to place with her family—led by her father, Henry, an itinerant farmer—to put money in their pockets and food in their mouths. But after their wagon breaks down, Henry is offered work on a tobacco farm and a house to stay in—a job that becomes permanent when he is offered the tenant’s place. Accustomed to the wandering life, at first Ellen does not want to settle down, especially with her best friend still on the road. But she soon comes to enjoy the daily rhythms of the farm, her bed, and a newfound feeling of security. And when her father gets an even better job at another farm, Ellen finds that her solitary days have come to end. In the small community, she begins to make friends—and even finds an opportunity to fall in love. But like the seasons, good and bad times come and go, and dark secrets threaten Ellen’s newfound happiness and peace . . . “This is a book that embraces life. . . . Written in a prose at once lucid and arresting, rhythmical, fresh in phrasing and construction, giving always the effect of effortless arrangement.” —The New York Times “This . . . epic novel of Americana is now considered a classic.” —Kentucky Living

When an interloper is spotted, Devon Morgan investigates, stunned to find a beautiful but battered thrall. Devon has always enjoyed the idea of being a hero, but given a chance to become one in real life leaves him torn between bringing his dreams to life and following his instincts. Keeping Karsten’s best interests in mind helps him make the right decisions, but when bloodlust hits him for the first time, will he destroy the fragile trust they’ve built? While the two men struggle to come to terms, Caleb and McBride try to compromise, but when neither man is willing to bend, one of them makes a heartbreaking decision.
