Book excerpt: The world of golf is at a crossroads. As technological innovations displace traditional philosophies, the golfing community has splintered into two deeply combative factions: the old-school teachers and players who believe in feel, artistry, and imagination, and the technical minded who want to remake the game around data. In Golf's Holy War, Brett Cyrgalis takes readers inside the heated battle playing out from weekend hackers to PGA Tour pros. At the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California, golfers clad in full-body sensors target weaknesses in their biomechanics, while others take part in mental exercises designed to test their brain's psychological resilience. Meanwhile, coaches like Michael Hebron purge golfers of all technical information, tapping into the power of intuitive physical learning by playing rudimentary games. From historic St. Andrews to manicured Augusta, experimental communes in California to corporatized conferences in Orlando, William James to Ben Hogan to theoretical physics, the factions of the spiritual and technical push to redefine the boundaries of the game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was participating in a scramble golf tournament in early spring 2016. It was the long driving hole - a par 5. I was one of the longer drivers in the group and I really wanted to bust one out there. I was feeling rickety that day (you know when your muscles are tight and you feel like your joints are kind of fused together). So I did what felt comfortable to me; I didn't realize it at the time, but it was the beta version of the STICKMAN Golf Swing. I pured it dead straight and long. Searching for a reliable golf swing is like trying to find the holy grail. It's a pipe dream. I was searching for 30 years. I was endlessly tinkering, watching youtube videos, seeking out tips from gurus and touring pros. Discovering the early version of the STICKMAN Golf Swing was like many beautiful discoveries. It was serendipitous. The STICKMAN Golf Swing was fully realized by me (a single digit handicap golfer) by the fall of 2016. Before STICKMAN, I was a student of the golf swing idea that you force yourself to primarily work a ball left or work a ball right. The idea was that if you know your tendency when you tee off, you can aim down the edge of the fairway and have the full width of the fairway at your disposal. I was a right-handed natural drawer of the ball, but when I got nervous or tried to take a big rip, I'd often block or slice the shot. And if you are aiming down the right side of the fairway expecting a draw, this can be nerve-wracking. So I learned how to reliably fade the ball. I found that if I was nervous or took a big swipe, I might get an exaggerated slice, but at least I was aiming along the left edge of the fairway. Sadly, over the decades, I just reinforced a slice swing that became shorter and shorter in distance and I never knew when it was going to be a gentle fade or a banana ball. So, from that moment - that "swing" - during the scramble tournament, I made it my mission to search for the golf swing holy grail with unequaled passion and fury. Pounding out balls at the driving range: playing round after round of golf (much to the chagrin of my wife and children who not surprisingly did not share this passion). I practiced the "swing". I honed the "swing". It's straight: it's long: it's repeatable; it's kinder to the body. it's amazing. I took copious notes. I wrote this book. I'm so excited to share it with you. Especially if you are frustrated with your golf swing and are thinking about giving up golf altogether! Last Spring, I shored up my golf knowledge by passing all requirements for Canadian Golf Teachers Federation membership (an affiliate of the American based World Golf Teachers Federation). Secondly, I took on 3 frustrated, senior-aged golfers this past summer to teach them STICKMAN. Two of the chaps had to pause golf for medical reasons. Graciously, they assured me that it wasn't because of my method or me pushing too hard. In fact, they have asked to reconnect next spring. The third fellow, Daryle, had amazing success. At first, I thought Daryle was going to give up on the swing. He was struggling with all these new ideas while battling his previous, more comfortable swing. But, at the 2 month mark, he started hitting the ball longer, straighter and more consistently. Here's what he has to say: "I recommend the STICKMAN Golf Swing method wholeheartedly. I haven't had such command of my ball since I was a junior. If you are struggling with your game, do yourself a favor and try Eric's technique. " Consider adopting this swing method and bringing back joy to your game.

Book excerpt: "It is, I believe, the lack of a basic technique, scientifically and athletically sound, which accounts for the confusion and uncertainty that exist even at the highest level of this, the most difficult of all games." - Mindy Blake A bestseller all over the world on its first publication, it is now available for a new generation of golfers to learn from. Challenging conventional ideas about golf, Mindy Blake's love of the game shines through as he offers a deeper understanding of what golf is about and how that can be used to improve any golfer's game. A controversial but widely acclaimed technique that could revolutionise any golfer's game. In athletics developments in technique have improved performances dramatically, yet before Mindy Blake no instructor had looked at golf from the point of view of athletics. Mindy Blake believed that "golf is purely a matter of technique" and was the first golf instructor to look at improving a golfer's technique by studying what they could learn from other sports (as well as understanding the science behind such sporting techniques). Looking at developments in events such as shot putting and pole vaulting Mindy Blake began to challenge conventional ideas of golfing technique. The result was controversial but it has revolutionised the game of all who have tried it. In athletics legs are the source of the athlete's power but it is their body which channels that power, Mindy Blake has created a technique that is based on athletic principles and which will dramatically improve the swing of a golfer of any standard. The line drawings make this book the ideal guide for anyone who wants to know how to improve their swing.

You might never be really great, but at least you will know that you are going to be consistent in your shot. That's all golf really is, the most consistent way to repeat an action as closely as possible each time that will return the club face to a square impact position. Whether you want to (1) learn basic golf techniques, (2) improve your consistency, or (3) master the mental part of the game, this book will teach you everything you need to know. Do missed putts drive you crazy? Stop doing the same thing while expecting different results. If your game is not improving, you can keep on flailing away OR you can start applying proven strategies to improve your game. I know there are a lot of contradictory opinions on various aspects of golf that can easily have your head spinning in confusion. What I've done in this book is to wade through all the knowledge out there and then distilled it into the best advice possible in the form of straightforward instructions anybody can follow to start seeing steady improvements in their golf game. Would you like to see your game steadily improve? Start learning the best ideas which can work in harmony to lower your scores. I've explained why each strategy I've included is useful and effective. Some of the simplest instructions, when followed consistently, can have the greatest impact on your game. So go ahead: as you discover each principle, start to apply it to your golfing, and take note of how your playing improves! Get the perfect swing. Because you are a unique person, your perfect swing is going to be unique to you. Instead of burdening you with a plethora of minute details that nobody can pay attention to all at once, I've boiled it down to a few key ideas that will help you greatly improve your swing. You can train yourself to concentrate on these simple items as you prepare for and execute your swing. What I share in this book is designed to help your mind and body work in unison to find the swing that is optimal for you. Balance the technical versus the intuitive. All golfers fall somewhere along the lines between technical players and those who rely mainly on instinct. While, for each person you interview, you will get at least one (and sometimes more than one!) opinion regarding which style of play is better, I have taken a mixed position. This allows me to share with you the best of both extremes, equipping you to play both technically and intuitively to your greatest advantage. What Will You Learn About Golf? How to boost your putting precision. Tips that will have you hitting harder and with greater accuracy. Practical instruction to increase your concentration and focus to new heights. The best conditioning and nutrition strategies for enhancing your game. How to play strategically and intelligently, so you can make the most of each stroke. You Will Also Discover: How to relax and enjoy the game. A summary of the best equipment available that can enhance your play. How to free your mind for better performance when playing. Practical tips that will have you consistently shooting lower scores. Start winning and having fun on the golf course! Boost your game today: Buy It Now!

It's precisely for this reason that certain methods and philosophies have been perpetuated through generations of golfers even if those approaches aren't the best or optimal. It creates a general reluctance to experiment, try new things, and test different ideas. Swimming against the currents of conformity have been the mavericks and innovators of golf history. In a quantifiable way, this book explores the adoption of unconventional methods in golf history, analyzes current innovations, and explores game changing possibilities of the future. While it's never been just about physical talent, strength, or coordination, golf has increasingly become a game of wits, the ability to out-think, out-prepare, and out-maneuver opponents before ever setting foot on the first tee. For the average golfer who has been trying to get better for years without success, perhaps it is time to think out-of-the-box, explore unconventional ways to improve as well as new ways to enjoy the game. For aspiring collegiate and professional golfers, it will be difficult to outpace the herd by following in the tired and well-trodden paths of others. From high handicap to low, every golfer can benefit from spending time out-of-the-box.
