(or Jay) McCullough, using the pseudonym "J.A.C.K.," it also predicted the advent of golf carts, golf professionals and international golf competitions. The book chronicles the tale of one Alexander J. Gibson, who falls into a deep sleep in 1892. He awakens 108 years later into a world, where, among other wonders, women dress like men and hold top positions in society. They also do all the work while the men play golf full time! J. McCullough was a Scottish author and avid golfer of the late 19th century. His fame rests on two books, Golf in the Year 2000, or, What we are coming to (1892) and Golf: Containing Practical Hints, with Rules of the Game (1899). McCullough wrote his latter book under "J. McCullough" and his earlier one under the pseudonym "J.A.C.K." Sources conflict as to whether his first name was Jack or Jay, and most other biographical information on him is completely lacking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a book about golf and the way it's played in the year 2000-only it was written in 1892. On March 24, 1892, Alexander Gibson, an inveterate golfer, fell asleep. He woke up the following day, March 25th-in the year 2000. This begins a series of adventures in which Gibson must not only learn how the game of golf has changed, but how society has changed as well. On the golf course he discovers golf carts that drive themselves, golf clubs that automatically keep track of the user's score, and mandatory jackets that yell "FORE" every time he swings. But this is nothing compared to the society he discovers with digital watches, bullet trains, television sets, and women's lib. "It's almost impossible to believe that this eerily prophetic book was written in the late 1800s-yet it was. It's a classic!"

Book Synopsis The Ministry of Truth by : Dorian Lynskey
Download or read book The Ministry of Truth written by Dorian Lynskey and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rich and compelling. . .Lynskey’s account of the reach of 1984 is revelatory.” --George Packer, The Atlantic An authoritative, wide-ranging, and incredibly timely history of 1984--its literary sources, its composition by Orwell, its deep and lasting effect on the Cold War, and its vast influence throughout world culture at every level, from high to pop. 1984 isn't just a novel; it's a key to understanding the modern world. George Orwell's final work is a treasure chest of ideas and memes--Big Brother, the Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, 2+2=5--that gain potency with every year. Particularly in 2016, when the election of Donald Trump made it a bestseller ("Ministry of Alternative Facts," anyone?). Its influence has morphed endlessly into novels (The Handmaid's Tale), films (Brazil), television shows (V for Vendetta), rock albums (Diamond Dogs), commercials (Apple), even reality TV (Big Brother). The Ministry of Truth is the first book that fully examines the epochal and cultural event that is 1984 in all its aspects: its roots in the utopian and dystopian literature that preceded it; the personal experiences in wartime Great Britain that Orwell drew on as he struggled to finish his masterpiece in his dying days; and the political and cultural phenomena that the novel ignited at once upon publication and that far from subsiding, have only grown over the decades. It explains how fiction history informs fiction and how fiction explains history.

Book excerpt: Best Books of 2016 BOSTON GLOBE * THE ATLANTIC From the acclaimed bestselling author of The Information and Chaos comes this enthralling history of time travel—a concept that has preoccupied physicists and storytellers over the course of the last century. James Gleick delivers a mind-bending exploration of time travel—from its origins in literature and science to its influence on our understanding of time itself. Gleick vividly explores physics, technology, philosophy, and art as each relates to time travel and tells the story of the concept's cultural evolutions—from H.G. Wells to Doctor Who, from Proust to Woody Allen. He takes a close look at the porous boundary between science fiction and modern physics, and, finally, delves into what it all means in our own moment in time—the world of the instantaneous, with its all-consuming present and vanishing future.
