Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century the borderlands between the United States, the British Empire in Canada, and the Asia-Pacific Rim emerged as a crossroads of the Pacific world. In Pacific Connections, Kornel Chang tells the dramatic stories of the laborers, merchants, smugglers, and activists who crossed these borders into the twentieth century, and the American and British empire-builders who countered them by hardening racial and national lines. But even as settler societies attempted to control the processes of imperial integration, their project fractured under its contradictions. Migrant workers and radical activists pursued a transnational politics through the very networks that made empire possible. Charting the U.S.-Canadian borderlands from above and below, Chang reveals the messiness of imperial formation and the struggles it spawned from multiple locations and through different actors across the Pacific world. Pacific Connections is the winner of the Outstanding Book in History award from the Association for Asian American Studies and is a finalist for the John Hope Franklin Book Prize from the American Studies Association.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science Communication Challenge explores and discusses the whys – as distinct from the hows – of science communication. Arguing that the dominant science communication paradigm is didactic, it makes the case for a political category of science communication, aimed at furthering discussions of science-related public affairs and making room for civilized and reasonable exchanges between different points of view. As civil societies and knowledge societies, modern democratic societies are confronted with the challenge of accommodating both the scientific logic of truth-seeking and the classical political logic of pluralism. The didactic science communication paradigm, however, is unsuited to dealing with substantial disagreement. Therefore, it is also unsuited to facilitate communication about the steadily increasing number of science-related political issues. Using insights from an array of academic fields, The Science Communication Challenge explores the possible origins of the didactic paradigm, connecting it to particular understandings of knowledge, politics and the public and to the widespread assumption of a science-versus-politics dichotomy. The book offers a critique of that assumption and suggests that science and politics be seen as substantially different activities, suited to dealing with different kinds of questions – and to different varieties of science communication.

Book excerpt: It was seen over 160 years ago. It was denied and scoffed at by experienced leaders and elders. It was a young boys tale; a fabrication to bolster his status within his tribe. Only his family believed. Over the years through turmoil and cultural upheaval the truth became known. It is a story of confirmation, standing up for ones principles and beliefs. As the years passed the implications become much broader than the original vision. Who knows how history would have c hanged if the boys story was believed? The convictions and choices that Horse Killer, Eagle Who Broke His Wing, Buffalo Robe, Fire Lance, Maxwell Slade (Sun Caller), Randle and Chip, Paxton, Sally, Tully, Fredericks, and Captain Adkins, made at various times over a 160 year span are linked together to confirm the vision. Commitment, values, convictions, and beliefs, converge to exonerate one young boys tale. Everyone is in this book or someone you know. . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Christian theology as seen through the lens of Native American tradition A unique look at Christian biblical interpretation and theology from the perspective of Native American tradition, this book focuses on four specific experiences of Jesus as portrayed in the synoptic gospels. It examines each story as a “vision quest,” a universal spiritual phenomenon, but one of particular importance within North American indigenous communities. Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is the first quest. It speaks to a foundational Native American value: the need to enter into the “we” rather than the “I.” The Transfiguration is the second quest, describing the Native theology of transcendent spirituality that impacts reality and shapes mission. Gethsemane is the third quest. It embodies the Native tradition of the holy men or women, who find their freedom through discipline and concerns for justice, compassion, and human dignity. Golgotha is the final quest. It represents the Native sacrament of sacrifice (e.g., the Sun Dance). The chapter on Golgotha is a discussion of kinship, balance, and harmony: all primary to Native tradition and integral to Christian thought.

An Epic Saga of Two Families Living on Opposite Sides of Slavery in Pre-civil War South
It's 1852 in the Delta of Mississippi, and the choice to sell one slave sets in motion a series of tragic events for two families on a cotton plantation.
What if the nightmare you feared your entire life became a reality in one day? Without notice, Thomas is snatched from all he knows and placed in an unjust world of cruelty. Back at Arledge Hall plantation, his parents, Joe and Lucy, grieve his absence, but are powerless to help their firstborn son. When Joe stands up to the neighboring plantation's overseer, he invites vengeance on his son, which causes Thomas to run.
The Banks family is at odds with the decision to sell their slave Thomas. When a new book circulates the country, raising questions about their southern way of life, the family faces opposition, not only with each other, but with their neighbors as well, especially since they have family members in the north. What follows is unthinkable for them all, but Joe's courageous faith shines in the face of an evil that threatens the occupants of Arledge Hall.
How can a slave have such an impact on a landowner's family as they endure cruel tragedy while approaching the threat of war? And can that impact be welcomed by the landowner who blames him for their grief?
Spend almost a decade at Arledge Hall in this first book of the trilogy, and discover why you'll want to visit again and again.

Book excerpt: The recent Year for Priests focused considerable attention on the priesthood, resulting in many books, articles, retreats, conferences, and symposia. In Gold Tested in Fire, Ronald D. Witherup, SS, makes an important new contribution. Intersecting scriptural and theological context with lived pastoral insight, Witherup explores both classic and contemporary understandings of the priesthood, offers insights into the four pillars" suggested for priestly formation, and looks at the charism of priests, and the need for ongoing formation across a life-span. Having engaged in priestly formation in seminaries for a number of years, Witherup moves beyond overly idealized or pietistic approaches to the presbyteral life to offer key insights on the challenges and rewards inherent in contemporary priestly ministry. Underlying his approach is the firm conviction that the present testing in the priesthood is a profound summons to a new Pentecost, inopportunity for the priesthood to be cleansed and remade, and ultimately stronger.
