Book Synopsis ReFocus: The Films of Delmer Daves by : Carter Matthew Carter
Download or read book ReFocus: The Films of Delmer Daves written by Carter Matthew Carter and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Destination Tokyo (1943) to The Battle of the Villa Fiorita (1965), Delmer Daves was responsible for a unique body of work, but few filmmakers have been as critically overlooked in existing scholarly literature. Often regarded as an embodiment of the self-effacing craftsmanship of classical and post-War Hollywood, films such as Broken Arrow (1950) and 3:10 to Yuma (1957) reveal a filmmaker concerned with style as much as sociocultural significance. As the first comprehensive study of Daves's career, this collection of essays seeks to deepen our understanding of his work, and also to problematize existing conceptions of him as a competent, conventional and even naive studio man.
Book Synopsis Crowdsourcing the Law by : Francine Banner
Download or read book Crowdsourcing the Law written by Francine Banner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the general public may feel uncomfortable discussing sexual assault and violence with neighbors or coworkers, the popularity of Twitter, Snapchat, and a host of other social media platforms suggests that we are not shy about expressing our opinions online. Debates that just a few years ago would have taken place in real life have been relocated online; allowing eager commenters to share their thoughts on guilt or innocence with legions of virtual strangers. Crowdsourcing the Law explores how everyday participants interpret and apply law in the influential online court of public opinion. Engaging a multidisciplinary, case study approach, the book analyzes social media comments about public figures such as Bill Cosby, Brock Turner, and Harvey Weinstein to address ambitious questions like: How are rape myths being challenged, reinforced, and reinvented on social media? What is the promise and peril of the #MeToo movement for transforming the law? And can due process be afforded in the face of an increasingly powerful virtual jury?

Book Synopsis S.T. Gill & His Audiences by : Sasha Grishin
Download or read book S.T. Gill & His Audiences written by Sasha Grishin and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Thomas Gill, or STG as he was universally known, was Australia’s most significant and popular artist of the mid-nineteenth century. For his contemporaries he epitomised ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ basking in the glow of the gold rushes. He worked in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and left some of the most memorable images of urban and rural life in colonial Australia. A passionate defender of Indigenous Australians and of the environment, Gill in his art celebrated the emerging quintessential Australian character. This is the first major comprehensive book to be devoted to Gill and presents a radical reassessment of one of the most important figures in Australian colonial art and reproduces, in some instances for the first time, some of the most startling images from nineteenth-century Australian art. There will be an exhibition of S.T. Gill’s work at the State Library of Victoria in July 2015 and at the National Library of Australia in June 2016, plus smaller shows in regional Victorian galleries. In association with the State Library of Victoria.

Book Synopsis The Horror Film by : Peter Hutchings
Download or read book The Horror Film written by Peter Hutchings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Horror Film is an in-depth exploration of one of the most consistently popular, but also most disreputable, of all the mainstream film genres. Since the early 1930s there has never been a time when horror films were not being produced in substantial numbers somewhere in the world and never a time when they were not being criticised, censored or banned. The Horror Film engages with the key issues raised by this most contentious of genres. It considers the reasons for horror's disreputability and seeks to explain why despite this horror has been so successful. Where precisely does the appeal of horror lie? An extended introductory chapter identifies what it is about horror that makes the genre so difficult to define. The chapter then maps out the historical development of the horror genre, paying particular attention to the international breadth and variety of horror production, with reference to films made in the United States, Britain, Italy, Spain and elsewhere. Subsequent chapters explore: The role of monsters, focusing on the vampire and the serial killer. The usefulness (and limitations) of psychological approaches to horror. The horror audience: what kind of people like horror (and what do other people think of them)? Gender, race and class in horror: how do horror films such as Bride of Frankenstein, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Blade relate to the social and political realities within which they are produced? Sound and horror: in what ways has sound contributed to the development of horror? Performance in horror: how have performers conveyed fear and terror throughout horror's history? 1970s horror: was this the golden age of horror production? Slashers and post-slashers: from Halloween to Scream and beyond. The Horror Film throws new light on some well-known horror films but also introduces the reader to examples of noteworthy but more obscure horror work. A final section provides a guide to further reading and an extensive bibliography. Accessibly written, The Horror Film is a lively and informative account of the genre that will appeal to students of cinema, film teachers and researchers, and horror lovers everywhere.

Book Synopsis Media Inequality by : Victoria Fielding
Download or read book Media Inequality written by Victoria Fielding and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News media notionally underpins a vibrant and diverse democracy by representing political, industrial and social conflict to mass audiences. Yet, few studies measure how equitably journalists frame public contestation. Despite framing theory’s extensive use in media and communication scholarship, little is known about how frames are created and disseminated - how frames are built - to explain how and why journalists frame news the way they do. Media Inequality proposes that frame building occurs through a two-step process of frame adoption and replication. This two-step frame-building process is explored by identifying the newspaper master narratives used in five historical industrial dispute case studies. These master narratives are then mapped to public narratives used by unionised firefighters and their employer in the Australian case of the 2016 Victorian Country Fire Authority industrial dispute. By theorising about the causes of journalists’ inequitable framing of contested narratives, Media Inequality tells the story of unconscious structural media bias, interrogates the power of news media to reinforce dominant frames, offers valuable theoretical perspectives about the influence of media power on the accumulation of power in society, and provides lessons for groups communicating in competitive contexts. Media Inequality is thus valuable to scholars, academics and research students in the fields of journalism, communication, and media, particularly scholars interested in how journalists represent political, industrial, and social contestation.
