Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe and Beethoven Creator has given those who read it, a deep insight into the composer's greatness. Not so with Goethe. To understand and appreciate him is reserved to the comparatively small community which has a perfect knowledge of German, for no translation can do him justice. And those who do not know any of his works lack the interest which would prompt them to enquire into the great poet's life, thought, work, and influence. Yet Goethe, the Olympian, as he is often called, was one of the greatest figures in literature which the world has known. He ranks with Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare. Like these he belongs to the world rather than to a particular nation or race. He is, in literature, what Michelangelo and Raphael in the realm of art, a sovereign master. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven: A Memoir The year I 749 brought us Goethe; 1756, Mozart; 1759, Schiller; and 1770, Beethoven. Thus, within the short Space of twenty-one years four of the greatest poetic geniuses were born - four men of whom not only the German Fatherland, but all mankind must be proud. And even more happy than proud, since the most splendid gift which the Divine Being from time to time vouchsafes to poor humanity is that of genius. Through it we receive the highest good in which we are capable of participating - the forgetfulness of self in a nobler life. Genius it is that gives us, if but for a few short hours, that which the believer awaits with earnest hope in another and a better world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven's Letters, Vol. 1: A Critical Edition With Explanatory Notes This appears to be the special task of biography to present the man in relation to his times, and to show how far as a whole they are opposed to him, in how far they are favourable to him, and how, if he be an artist, poet, or writer, he reflects them outwardly. Thus wrote Goethe in his Wahrheit und Dichtung, and as regards Beethoven, his letters offer a unique biography, for studying the man in relation to his times, while such works as the Eroica and Choral symphonies certainly reflect them outwardly. We also see clearly from his letters how deeply he was affected by the times. He did not suddenly decide to write a work and dedicate it to Napoleon, for that was his original intention with respect to the Eroica nor did he suddenly think that Schiller's Ode to Joy would be a fine poem to set to music; but the one work was the outcome of strong sympathy with the man whom he thought was about to establish a republican millennium, the other of ardent desire for peace and goodwill to reign upon earth. Reichardt tells us of the ideals after which men were aiming at the end of the eighteenth century. The victories of the republican armies specially impressed Beethoven soon after his arrival in Vienna, for his native country suffered thereby, while the Ode to Joy of Schiller, though the setting was a late one, occupied his thoughts from a very early period. Of the horrors of war he had personal experience. In 1801 we find him taking part in a concert for the benefit of the wounded Austrian soldiers at the battle of Hainau; in 1805, Vienna was occupied by French troops, and again in 1809 the city of Vienna was bombarded and then occupied by Napoleon. The events of 1805 were unfavourable to the success of his opera Fidelio, while those of 1809 greatly worried him What a disturbing, wild life all around me, nothing but drums, cannons, men, misery of all sorts. So he writes in a graphic letter to his publishers, Breitkopf and Haertel (july 26. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egmont: A Tragedy IN the year 1825 Goethe had, as we are told by Ecker mann, the gratification of hearing from an Englishman that the interest felt by his countrymen in the German language was already considerable, and was growing daily, so that there was no young Englishman of good family who did not learn German.' How much more rejoiced would Goethe, who had a great admiration for everything English, have been, could he have lived to see the vast progress which the study of German has made in this country since that time; could he have lived to witness the general acknowledgment of German as an essential element of a liberal education for the merchant, the scholar, and the man of science the warm ap preciation of German poetry by all well-educated English men; and the Official recognition of the German language and literature in the great seats of learning in this country. The last-mentioned circumstance, in particular, has greatly con tributed to raise the standard of the study of German. It is now generally admitted that German must be studied as a classical language, and that the great authors of Germany require, and fully deserve, more scholarly interpretation than they received in former times. I have, therefore, in annotat ing German Classics, adopted the principle to edit them - to the best of my ability - in the manner in which Greek and Latin Classics have been edited by learned commentators. As to this volume, which forms the first part of the series of German Classics confided to my editorship by the Delegates of the Clarendon Press, I will be brief. My commentary to Egmont is the result of several years' study and labour. This drama is replete with historical allusions, far more so than is generally supposed. On account of this fact, I have carefully studied all the original sources, and have accordingly ex plained almost every passage which has an historical bearing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Egmont: Together With Schiller's Essays, Des Grafen Lamoral Von Egmont Leben Und Tod, And, Uber Egmont, Trauerspiel Von Goethe This edition of Egmont has been prepared largely with reference to the needs of such college students as have mastered sufficiently the principles of the German language to be able to read this drama as a classic. In the grammatical explanations and the various translations suggested by the editor, he has been guided by his class-room experience with students who have had about two years of German in college, and has carefully avoided the discussion of all questions, however interesting, that do not have an immediate bearing upon the drama as Goethe conceived it.
