Book Synopsis Struggling with God by : Simon D Podmore
Download or read book Struggling with God written by Simon D Podmore and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invoking the biblical motif of Jacob's struggle with the Face of God (Genesis 32), Simon D. Podmore undertakes a constructive theological account of 'spiritual trial' (tentatio; known in German mystical and Lutheran tradition as Anfechtung) in relation to enduring questions of the otherness and hiddenness of God and the self, the problem of suffering and evil, the freedom of Spirit, and the anxious relationship between temptation and ordeal, fear and desire. This book traces a genealogy of spiritual trial from medieval German mystical theology, through Lutheran and Pietistic thought (Tauler; Luther; Arndt; Boehme), and reconstructs Kierkegaard's innovative yet under-examined recovery of the category (AnfAegtelse: a Danish cognate for Anfechtung) within the modern context of the 'spiritless' decline of Christendom. Developing the relationship between struggle (Anfechtung) and release (Gelassenheit), Podmore proposes a Kierkegaardian theology of spiritual trial which elaborates the kenosis of the self before God in terms of Spirit's restless longing to rest transparently in God. Offering an original rehabilitation of the temptation of spiritual trial, this book strives for a renewed theological hermeneutic which speaks to the enduring human struggle to realise the unchanging love of God in the face of spiritual darkness.

Book Synopsis The Gods of Indian Country by : Jennifer Graber
Download or read book The Gods of Indian Country written by Jennifer Graber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, white Americans sought the cultural transformation and physical displacement of Native people. Though this process was certainly a clash of rival economic systems and racial ideologies, it was also a profound spiritual struggle. The fight over Indian Country sparked religious crises among both Natives and Americans. In The Gods of Indian Country, Jennifer Graber tells the story of the Kiowa Indians during Anglo-Americans' hundred-year effort to seize their homeland. Like Native people across the American West, Kiowas had known struggle and dislocation before. But the forces bearing down on them-soldiers, missionaries, and government officials-were unrelenting. With pressure mounting, Kiowas adapted their ritual practices in the hope that they could use sacred power to save their lands and community. Against the Kiowas stood Protestant and Catholic leaders, missionaries, and reformers who hoped to remake Indian Country. These activists saw themselves as the Indians' friends, teachers, and protectors. They also asserted the primacy of white Christian civilization and the need to transform the spiritual and material lives of Native people. When Kiowas and other Native people resisted their designs, these Christians supported policies that broke treaties and appropriated Indian lands. They argued that the gifts bestowed by Christianity and civilization outweighed the pains that accompanied the denial of freedoms, the destruction of communities, and the theft of resources. In order to secure Indian Country and control indigenous populations, Christian activists sanctified the economic and racial hierarchies of their day. The Gods of Indian Country tells a complex, fascinating-and ultimately heartbreaking-tale of the struggle for the American West.

Book excerpt: In Poems of Human Struggle and Gods Love, Margaret Freeman explores the theme of salvation: release from bondage to self-consciousness through the awakening of Christ-consciousness. She believes that this awakening to the glory of God is increasing on earth and she considers aspects of this through her poetry as she tells biblical and contemporary stories and shares personal revelation of the one who holds you dear. Freemans poetry gives voice to our insecurities, doubts and questions and the work of the spirit of Christ to awaken our own spirits to the fullness of the life God has for us, body and soul clothed in light and glory. Transfiguration Adam and Eve were naked; No shame they had to hide: Clothed in light and splendour, A delight to Gods eyes. Until Satan tempted them To believe his lie. He said God couldnt be trusted; Good things he withheld. He said they should seek out the truth The apple would reveal. And so through their own efforts They were bound to self-rule, To striving for perfection- All men became its fool. Their spirits now bound within the soul, And animal skins for clothing, They tried their best to work the soil As Satan stood by laughing. But God has not been outplayed; He came to earth, you see, To tell us he is the way For our spirits to be freed: Bound by grace to Truth and Light- Our transfiguration.

Download or read book Struggling with God written by Sam Sumner and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian has been given the great privilege of knowing God through Jesus Christ. While the Bible clearly shows us who God is, what he has done for us, and what he expects from our lives, that knowledge is nothing more than accumulated information unless acted upon. That knowledge must be wrestled out in everyday life as we seek to truly experience God for who the Bible declares him to be and seek to submit ourselves to his ways. In Struggling with God, author pastor Sam Sumner gives all Christians a basic overview of some key beliefs and practices of the Christian faith. Using examples from his own life and scripture, he shows how God patiently perseveres with those who struggle to know him and live in a way that pleases him. Dealing with such deep themes as the trinity, the struggle between good and evil, the redemptive story, the deity of Christ, and even the Holy Spirit, Struggling with God presents a theology for real life.

Book Synopsis The Struggle to Define God by : Robert A. Butterfield
Download or read book The Struggle to Define God written by Robert A. Butterfield and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about religious struggle studies four texts from postexilic Judah and applies them first to Judah and then, importantly, to modern America. Two of these texts--the books of Jonah and Job--speak out in favor of the theology of grace and against the theology of retribution, as advocated by the Jerusalem hardliners. This struggle to define God continues even today. Despite the biblical evidence--especially the example of Jesus--many Americans still believe in the God of retribution. Two other texts--the book of Ruth and the story of Rahab--demonstrate that if people reject xenophobia/nativism and misogyny, the entire community is blessed. Since xenophobia/nativism and misogyny are rampant in modern America, this message is rather timely. The last chapter argues that it is the mission of both synagogues and churches to define God correctly and then to help people overcome their resentment and prejudices and become partners with God, but that many predominantly white churches have failed in their mission, as evidenced by the fact that so many of their members voted for Donald Trump.

Book excerpt: 'Remarkably beautiful and pastoral' JUSTIN WELBY, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY 'Brimming with wisdom and humanity' DAME SARAH MULLALLY, DBE, BISHOP OF LONDON Struggling with God gets right to the heart of a great predicament for many Christians. When it feels as if our struggles are overwhelming - and our capacity for faith and hope and love is diminished - how is it possible to maintain, never mind nourish, our relationship with God? The truth, as this deeply compassionate volume reminds us, is that Jesus came alongside people wrestling with mental health problems. Many familiar conditions, such as anxiety and depression, and more severe ones, including bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia, are addressed by the authors here. Dispelling common myths and misconceptions, they explore the impact such mental health disorders can have on individual Christians, Church and society.. Each chapter includes biblical reflections relevant to its theme, prayers, questions to facilitate individual/group study, and pointers to further reading. In short, the book presents a Christian vision of spiritual and mental wellbeing through prayerful struggling with God.
Download or read book God with Us written by Ansley L. Quiros and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, the struggle over civil rights was not just about lunch counters, waiting rooms, or even access to the vote; it was also about Christian theology. Since both activists and segregationists ardently claimed that God was on their side, racial issues were imbued with religious meanings from all sides. Whether in the traditional sanctuaries of the major white Protestant denominations, in the mass meetings in black churches, or in Christian expressions of interracialism, southerners resisted, pursued, and questioned racial change within various theological traditions. God with Us examines the theological struggle over racial justice through the story of one southern town--Americus, Georgia--where ordinary Americans sought and confronted racial change in the twentieth century. Documenting the passion and virulence of these contestations, this book offers insight into how midcentury battles over theology and race affected the rise of the Religious Right and indeed continue to resonate deeply in American life.
