Book excerpt: "A devastating attack upon the dominance of atheism in science today." Giovanni Fazio, Senior Physicist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics The debate over the ultimate source of truth in our world often pits science against faith. In fact, some high-profile scientists today would have us abandon God entirely as a source of truth about the universe. In this book, two professional astronomers push back against this notion, arguing that the science of today is not in a position to pronounce on the existence of God—rather, our notion of truth must include both the physical and spiritual domains. Incorporating excerpts from a letter written in 1615 by famed astronomer Galileo Galilei, the authors explore the relationship between science and faith, critiquing atheistic and secular understandings of science while reminding believers that science is an important source of truth about the physical world that God created.

Book excerpt: Where do you seek God? Are you waiting for him to appear in a monumental, life-altering event? In God Moments, Catholic blogger Andy Otto shows you how to discover the unexpected beauty of God’s presence in the story of ordinary things and in everyday routines like preparing breakfast or walking in the woods. Drawing on the Ignatian principles of awareness, prayer, and discernment, Otto will help you discover the transforming power of God’s presence in your life and better understand your place in the world. Andy Otto found God’s presence in surprising moments during his life—when, as a Jesuit scholastic, he taught children in Jamaica and also as he discerned the call to marriage with his wife. By combining elements of Ignatian spirituality with the lessons that came from his experiences, Otto identified three practices that helped him find God in all things: Awareness—Gain an understanding that God is present in the ordinary messiness of our lives such as battle with depression or sharing in the struggle of a friend. Prayer—Develop a prayer life using Ignatian practices such as asking for a morning grace and examining how your prayer was answered at the end of the day. That way you can focus on a personal relationship with God that finds everyday physical activities such as making a meal as an opportunity to talk to him. Discernment—The more you are aware of God’s presence and draw closer to him in prayer, the better you can learn how to plug into God’s narrative of the world in a way that enables you to participate in the divine story through the use of your gifts and talents. With God Moments as a guide, you’ll have a better understanding of how to seek personal wholeness in the reality of God’s presence in the ordinary and learn to accept his invitation to participate in his transformation of the world.

Hawkins, author of When Pleasing Others Is Hurting You, shows how emotions can help readers discern what is most important, determine what is missing in their lives, and discover how God is leading them in new directions. The Power of Emotional Decision-Making reveals— Emotions are part of God's heart, as Jesus demonstrated in the temple with the moneychangers, at Lazarus' tomb, and in Gethsemane. God communicates not only through our mind and will but also through our emotions. Ignoring our emotions leads to the destructive influence of denial. Paying attention to our emotions helps us to deal more quickly and effectively with resentment and depression. Even anger, fear, and grief can lead us to make effective decisions. This unique guide will help readers discover what God is speaking to their hearts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Believers are only built through the teaching of the word, the communication of the doctrine of scripture is how believers become matured. And the Bible says for this reason, for this course, He gave on to some, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers for the maturing, perfecting of the saints. So, it is important that every time we are exposed to the word of God, no matter how brief, we must receive it with hearts opened and we must listen for transformation, not just information. The Bible says now that you know these things, happy are you if you do them. It is the doers of the word that become blessed, not just the hearer. As the Bible says that we do not be hearers alone but doers of the word. Matters of life and destiny. This book is going to challenge our hearts again and bring to our consciousness some of these truths that govern our faith walk to the end that we be established, strong and built. I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among them that are sanctified. I'd like to start by just communicating a burden that has been in my heart. It is God's desire that believers grow and continue to grow. It is not God's design that a believer get saved and remains at that level. The Bible tells us that growth is part of the expectations of God for a believer. In fact, it says, the path of the just is as a shining light that shines ever brighter onto the perfect day. That means that if believers don't grow, you don't allow space for others to come into the fold. Soul winning demands that as you are saved, you don't remain in that position indefinitely. You get to a point where through the ministry of the Word and the spirit, you are growing. Now, that vacuum should not be left empty. Someone went up to allow you come there. So, whilst you are transiting, you have a responsibility to make sure that the vacuum that you have created is not left. You have an assignment to make sure that as you grow spiritually, someone gets saved through your life and then begins that journey too. This is how God trained us. Never was there a time when you would look back and not find someone following you, even though you are following. You are growing. There has to be someone who gets saved through your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every action, whether positive or negative, starts with a decision. Decisions can either make you or break you. There are individuals who have never recovered from the effects of the negative choices they have made. It is therefore very important that we live close to God and seek Him as we make decisions. This book is written for those of us who have made negative choices and are trying to recover from the effects of them; those of us that are suffering from the consequences of negative choices that were made by others, that in some shape or form affected our lives. It seeks to help guide us in the importance of seeking God and hearing from Him as we go through the decision making process. The author relays these through a series of personal experiences prior to, and throughout the years of her walk with God. Even after we have made mistakes or suffered mishaps, it takes a decision to trust God to use our mistakes or misfortunes and work them together for our good. If we allow Him, the God of second chances will use our mistakes and negative decisions to refine us and advance us in our purpose. However, it all starts with a decision. We have to decide to trust Him, to seek Him, have faith in Him and to lay all our pain, our struggles, our shortcomings, mistakes and negative decisions at the foot of the Cross. It's a decision you will never regret. Shondel Andrea Jackson is a believer in Christ who has walked with God for almost twenty-two years. She is a registered nurse who works in management. She is a professor of nursing and the president and founder of Battered Women and Challenged Teens Ministries (BWCT). She is an active member of Nassau Tabernacle of Praise in Elmont, New York. God has given her a burden for the ministry of women and teens who are broken, hurt and abused. She currently resides in Springfield Gardens, New York with her daughter, Ayisha Natasha Jackson.

Pastor and author Kevin DeYoung counsels Christians to settle down, make choices, and do the hard work of seeing those choices through. Too often, he writes, God's people tinker around with churches, jobs, and relationships, worrying that they haven't found God's perfect will for their lives. Or-even worse-they do absolutely nothing, stuck in a frustrated state of paralyzed indecision, waiting...waiting...waiting for clear, direct, unmistakable direction. But God doesn't need to tell us what to do at each fork in the road. He's already revealed his plan for our lives: to love him with our whole hearts, to obey His Word, and after that, to do what we like. No need for hocus-pocus. No reason to be directionally challenged. Just do something.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God Have a Perfect Will for Your Life? Does God have a perfect will for each Christian? Can you be absolutely certain of God’s specific will for your life? In this expanded twenty-fifth anniversary edition of his highly acclaimed work, Garry Friesen examines the prevalent view on God’s will today and provides a sound biblical alternative to the traditional teaching of how God guides us. This new edition includes these helpful resources: • Study guide for small groups • Responses to Frequently Asked Questions • Guide to painless Scripture memorization Friesen tackles the very practical issues of choosing a mate, picking a career, and giving in this fresh and liberating approach to decision making and the will of God. Story Behind the Book Most Christians have been taught how to find God’s will, yet many are still unsure whether they’ve found it. God does guide His people, but the question is, “How does He guide?” After “putting out a fleece” to decide which college to attend, Garry Friesen began pondering why it was so hard to find God’s will when he had so sincerely sought it. Was he the only one who did not have 100 percent clarity for every decision? Then a new possibility struck—perhaps his understanding of the nature of God’s will was biblically deficient. Maybe there was a better way to understand HOW God guides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the church emerges from the impact of COVID, how will it reimagine its mission? With all the disruption COVID caused comes an opportunity for congregations. How will the local church organize itself, engage with the neighborhood and world, and offer pastoral care to a planet dealing with the significant issues heightened during COVID? Returning to old patterns of behavior is a wasted chance. A theological opportunity for the church lies in rediscovering the classical aim of leisure. The early church during the first two centuries offers us an understanding of leisure quite unique from the dominant expressions of leisure, such as Greek schole, Roman otium, and the Jewish Sabbath. By exploring early Christian practices, we can find insights about leisure for mission today. These practices include setting aside a single day of the week to worship, sharing in a common meal open to all, and, following the meal, incorporating into nonwork time care and engagement in the health and vitality of the community in the name of Jesus Christ. The followers of Jesus were consistent, if extraordinary, in meeting weekly, on the Lord’s Day, to worship, eat together, and go out into the neighborhood to live out their faith.
