Book excerpt: I was in a Christian leadership meeting in the mid 80's where Pa S.G. Elton, a missionary in Nigeria for 50 years, was a guest speaker. Pa Elton was a towering apostolic and prophetic vessel. In that meeting he made this prophetic utterance: Nigeria and Nigerians will be known all over the world for corruption. Your name -- Nigeria will stink for corruption but after a while a new phase will come -- a phase of righteousness. People from the nations of the earth will hold to a Nigerian and say, We want to follow you to your nation to go and learn righteousness. This, I believe, will happen as a result of the promised revival and the transformation that will result from this. We have seen the first phase of the prophecy fulfilled with unimaginable accuracy. The second phase must of necessity be fulfilled with the same accuracy. This is the new dawn that this book is all about. This book, God's Eternal Plan for Nigeria: Seven Eras of the Nation repositions the history of our nation in the context of the events of the end-time of world history. This book is a record of the events the author was shown in a series of encounters which is a revelation of God's eternal plan for the nation.

Book excerpt: Messenger is a study of the life, ministry, and theology of Sydney Granville Elton, a man who believed he had an apostolic message for the church in Nigeria and who stopped at nothing to deliver it. It will inspire you to find your place in prophetic destiny and fulfil it. Elton played the most significant role in shaping Pentecostalism in Nigeria during its first half-century. His impact on the movement was nothing short of revolutionary and his story is crucial to rediscovering the essence that created one of the most vibrant Pentecostal movements in the world. Messenger explores the beginnings of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, bringing alive the stories of its major characters, the passion that catapulted the outpouring into a national phenomenon, and the first major crisis that marked the turning point in its early history. Elton's pivotal role from these early days, and in virtually every significant initiative crucial to its development for fifty years is told in riveting detail. At no other time-when the foundations of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria are being vigorously shaken, and when both the church and the nation are in desperate need of a new breed of visionary and courageous leadership-does Elton's bold prophetic vision hold greater significance to our collective spiritual experience. Messenger will impart to you a fresh vision of God's purpose and stir you to be a part of it.

Book excerpt: New from Best-Selling Author John Piper From Genesis to Revelation, the providence of God directs the entire course of redemptive history. Providence is "God's purposeful sovereignty." Its extent reaches down to the flight of electrons, up to the movements of galaxies, and into the heart of man. Its nature is wise and just and good. And its goal is the Christ-exalting glorification of God through the gladness of a redeemed people in a new world. Drawing on a lifetime of theological reflection, biblical study, and practical ministry, pastor and author John Piper leads us on a stunning tour of the sightings of God's providence—from Genesis to Revelation—to discover the allencompassing reality of God's purposeful sovereignty over all of creation and all of history. Piper invites us to experience the profound effects of knowing the God of all-pervasive providence: the intensifying of true worship, the solidifying of wavering conviction, the strengthening of embattled faith, the toughening of joyful courage, and the advance of God's mission in this world.

Do we go to a place of everlasting reward or eternal torment? Are we destined to be reincarnated, coming to life again in a different body in a seemingly endless cycle of living and dying? Will we ever see deceased loved ones again? Is there somewhere you can go to find the answers to these questions? The Bible tells us exactly what happens after death. It tells us what happens to those who have done right (will they go to heaven?) and wrong (or be tormented in an ever-burning hell?) and reveals the fate of the billions of people who have never known God and His way of life. Most churches claim to teach what the Bible says—but what does it really reveal? You need to discover the answers yourself inside this Bible Study aid, What Happens After Death?. You'll be shocked when you find out what the Bible really teaches! Chapters in this ebook: -- What Happens After Death? -- The Wondrous Gift of Life -- The Mystery of Death -- Do Some Bible Verses Teach That We Have an Immortal Soul? -- The History of the Immortal-Soul Teaching -- What About Reported Life-After-Death Experiences? -- God's Plan of Redemption -- The Promise of Life After Death -- Ancient Pagan Belief in Heaven -- Words of Encouragement -- Are There Saved Human Beings in Heaven -- Did Paul Expect to Be Conscious in Heaven Right After Dying? -- How Eternal Life Will Ultimately Be Offered to All -- The Biblical View of 'Hell' -- Will the Torment of the Wicked Last Forever? -- Are the Wicked Punished in an Ever-Burning Hell? -- Are Some Tortured Forever in a Lake of Fire? -- Lazarus and the Rich Man: Proof of Heaven and Hell? -- Steps in Dealing With Grief -- How Can We Help Those Who Are Grieving? -- Everlasting Life Conquers Death Inside this Bible Study Aid ebook: "...those who have died are unconscious, as if they are sleeping a dreamless sleep, awaiting their time to be called out of the grave and resurrected to a new life." "Many people, however, believe in a perpetual, ever-burning hellfire or a condition of spiritual torment in which evil people are tortured throughout eternity. But the Bible’s simple teaching conveys nothing like this." "Understanding the meaning of life, death and what follows this physical life can give priceless comfort and hope in the face of death. It should also have a great impact on the kind of person you are, motivating you to live carefully and make wise choices."

Book excerpt: The received account on African evangelical Christianity regarding social witness in a section of Western scholarship is that it is anti-development and a-political. Such an account heavily draws from an instrumentalist and functionalist assessment of such Christianity without recourse to its emic perspective. Using the case-study method, this book presents an ethnographic examination of this functionalist reading by investigating, describing and analysing evangelical Christian theological and socio-political consciousness within the context of oil and conflict in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. Adopting approaches from practical theology, congregational studies, and anthropology of religion, the author challenges such a reading using data gathered from three congregations in the region. His discourse revolves around answers to the following four critical questions: • What are the underlying theological issues and beliefs of Nigerian evangelical Christians within the context of oil and conflict? • What is their prevalent praxis within the context of Nigeria’s political economy of oil and conflict? •How accurate is the received account that African evangelical and ‘fundamentalist’ Christianity lacks social responsibility and is a-political and anti-development? • What would a contextual political theology for Nigeria’s political economy of oil look like? The theological issues are varied and the prevalent praxis nuanced, which then serves as a veritable critique of the claim that African evangelical Christianity lacks social responsibility due to its preoccupation with soul-winning. Whereas such Christianity places much emphasis on the winning of souls as an expression of its spirituality, it is neither oblivious nor indifferent to its socio-political milieu. Rather it sees such spirituality as a form of political praxis. Some of the trajectories of the spirituality include a theology of conversion, a theology of prayer, and an ethics of crude oil, with Total Freedom as the nomenclature for the specific theological perspective offered for Nigeria’s political economy of oil. While locating this theological perspective within the taxonomy of Liberation Theology, the affinity and dissonance between the two are identified.

In this in-depth study, Yusufu Turaki offers a theological framework for engaging this clash of perspectives in Africa, where traditional African religions, colonialism, and exposure to Christianity have each had a lasting impact on contemporary African worldviews. Professor Turaki undertakes a systematic analysis of the nature of African Traditional Religion, its complex history with Christianity, and the need for African Christian theology to address its cultural and historical roots effectively. He provides both a conceptual framework and practical guide for engaging African cultures and religions with compassion, understanding, and a firm foundation rooted in scriptural truth. This book is an excellent resource for students of religion and theology, as well as those interested in Africa’s traditional heritage or drawn to the important work of cross-cultural and inter-religious dialogue.

Book excerpt: A phenomenon seldom recognised in the media of Western Europe and North America is the extraordinary growth of the Catholic Church of South America and sub-Saharan Africa during the last five decades, and nowhere more than in Nigeria. A key figure in that country and in that growth, up to his death in 1995, was Cardinal Ekandem, the first Anglophone West-African bishop - the first of many - and an outstanding churchman of the 20th Century. Fr Michael Edem's scholarly biography of the Cardinal is a fascinating account of a journey from life in a traditional African village to the consistory of cardinals of the Catholic Church in Rome. It will be of enormous interest to a wider public for the author's personal knowledge of the cardinal and of the Efik/Ibibio culture in which they both grew up.
