Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's Counterpoint This is the story of an episode, but all the life of a man went to the making of it; and the fierce turning-point of his desires could have no meaning to those who know nothing of his ripening. The Blenkinsops will serve as an example of the society that condemned Philip Maning without the shadow of mitigation. They furnished an extreme example, no doubt; they were prejudiced beyond the limit of the common convention. But even the generous-minded found it difficult to condone Maning's fault. The explanation, which he and his wife alone could give, was far too elaborate and too integral to be set forth either in conversation or in the longest letter. Judged by the test of ordinary experience, Maning forfeited the respect of his most intimate friends; and he and his wife realised the validity of that test, and began life again in new circumstances with a fresh circle of acquaintances. They cannot be blamed for shirking that impossible explanation. It had no value as propaganda for preaching a new way of life. The conditions that led to Maning's enlightenment were not typical; and the sin that in his case proved to be venial when judged by results, might in another instance be inexcusable. It must not be regarded as a precedent, but only as the extreme presentation of the curious means by which understanding may sometimes be released. All this apology will seem a little ominous, but I must make it clear that while I am deliberately writing to defend a particular man, I cannot defend his act apart from the idiosyncrasy of his character. Philip Maning spent his boyhood under the yoke of a stern Victorian father whose favorite word was "Don't." Philip goes to Dulwich College, where his career was entirely uneventful save that he sometimes had queer sensations in passing through the tunnel under Herne Hill station, and once had an eerie experience in the fields near Croxted Road, his first contact with the beastly. Not being clever enough to win a scholarship at the 'Varsity, he goes into the business of a publisher named Wing, whose specialty is Purity. Maning hates all women, or as it is discovered later, "he loves women too much, and is afraid." However at Wing's he is brought into contact with Evelyn Lang, the business-like daughter of a Dean whom he had once met in odd circumstances, and becomes engaged to her. The physical side of marriage is repulsive to him, but he marries Evelyn and has a son. His rigorousness develops, he drifts apart from his wife, he sinks into an abnormal state, is visited by neuralgia, indigestion, and sleepnessness. He is roused at length by the visit of Evelyn's cousin Hélène, the wife of a Californian millionaire and a true Parisienne. Evelyn had by now resolved to leave Philip, but Hélène, who claims to understand him better, renders that course unnecessary. She elopes with him. The change does Philip good, his eyes are opened, a miracle is performed. "I was a pathological case all right. I don't deny that. But I know that I'm cured." He leaves the lady from Paris (and California) within three weeks, and within nine is discussing the matter quite coolly with Evelyn at Seaford. "But will you always feel that?" she asked, and the tears that had welled into her eyes, began to overflow. So when the novel is beginning to wax exciting, Mr. Beresford, who is nothing if not contrapuntal, writes his coda, for the vox humana. Such is the outline of the story. -Meredith Revisited, and Other Essays [1921]

Book excerpt: John Davys Beresford (17 March 1873 - 1 February 1947) was an English writer, now remembered for his early science fiction and some short stories in the horror story and ghost story genres. Beresford was a great admirer of H.G. Wells, and wrote the first critical study of Wells in 1915. His Wellsian novel The Hampdenshire Wonder was a major influence on Olaf Stapledon. His other science-fiction novels include The Riddle of the Tower, about a dystopian, hive-like society. His father was a clergyman in Castor, now in Cambridgeshire near Peterborough. J. D. Beresford was affected by infantile paralysis, which left him partially disabled. He was educated at Oundle. After training to become an architect, he became a professional writer, first as a dramatist, and journalist. In early adulthood he broke away from his father's views and became a "determined but defensive" agnostic. He combined a prominent place in Edwardian literary London with time spent in the provinces, in particular Cornwall where D. H. Lawrence had an extended stay in his Porthcothan cottage. Later in life Beresford abandoned his earlier agnosticism and described himself as a Theosophist and a pacifist. Beresford was also interested in psychology, and attended several meetings organised by A.R. Orage to discuss psychological issues. Other attendees at these meetings included Havelock Ellis, Clifford Sharp, David Eder and Maurice Nicoll. Beresford also contributed to numerous publications; in addition to being a book reviewer for The Manchester Guardian, he also wrote for the New Statesman, The Spectator, Westminster Gazette, and the Theosophist magazine The Aryan Path.At one point, Beresford was offered the editorship of the pacifist magazine Peace News but declined because he felt he "would be a bad editor." Beresford's interest in the spiritual and philosophical may be best illustrated by the publisher notes to his novel, On A Huge Hill:

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ways of the Gods But while I reverenced the sublimity of the Duomo and greatly admired the Baptistery, with its bronze doors by Ghiberti, I fell in love at first Sight with the Campanile of Giotto. This dream of form and color, seen for the first time in the holy hour of dawn, inspired my soul with sensations of delight that were painful in their intensity. AS I stood in silent worship before this product of human genius, it seemed to me a thing of life. It was the soul of the artist immortalized, - Giotto existent in his work! So lost was I in admiration of this bell-tower that I forgot for the time why it was that I had come to the Piazza del Duomo at this early hour in the morning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Knees of the Gods Within its forty miles of walls, Corinth lay like a giant, stretching its limbs between the lofty Citadel, Acro-Corin-thus, and the sea. Its gardens and temples, its statues and colonnades, and its brown tiled roofs rolled on like a river whose flow was arrested by the uplifted mass of tower-studded defences. The roar of the living million or more rose up from the crowded city. Along the amber sands the Crissian sea curled its peacock blue waters. Red, white, and purple sails sent long trails of colour across the liquid surface, while about the docks of the war triremes, the reflections were black. For the trade of all the known world came to anchor at either one of Corinth's two ports. Upward from the plain, mighty Acro-Corinthus sprang. Like a victor carrying flowery wreaths to perilous heights, the mountain's jagged rock surface showed, here and there, the bloom of verdure. At certain altitudes the rocks receeded, forming natural terraces. On one such, Manes, the famous chorus-master, had built him a house. Such narrow ledges of space were cheap. A chorus in training could here be put through their daily drill, and slaves and masters lodged, at half the price asked within luxurious and costly Corinthian streets.
