Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I remember sitting in a criminal justice class in a University. I was presented by one of my professors with Jose Albert Garcia's case. I wondered what had ever happened to Jose, and why nobody had ever done a book, if films about his case were done already. I wanted to pass on the message of how powerful God is. Here was a 17-year old boy on death row, days away from being executed and God miraculously saved him. It just was not Jose's time to go, and God still wants him alive. He has a certain plan for him that only He knows. There is a reason why Jose is still alive today. This case proved that no man, society, money, judge or political power can beat God's divine forces, will, or power. If God wants you alive, you will remain alive. This book took two years in the making, one year to gain Jose's trust and the other in the actual gathering of information from Jose Alberto Garcia.

Book excerpt: This book is based on a real true crime story that took place in Laredo, Texas during the year 1991, "The Triple-Ax Murder." Miguel Angel Martinez was the first and youngest in Texas to be on death row. Miguel Angel Martinez is still in prison serving a life sentence. His sentence to death was commuted to a life sentence. Miguel Angel Martinez has been eligible for parole since 2006 but keeps getting denied, due to the nature of the crime he "supposedly" committed. His story can be compared to the movie Shawshank Redemption, where he resembles the fictional character, Andy Dupresne. The only difference is that Miguel Angel's story is real and not a fictional movie written by Stephen King. Miguel Angel Martinez came out speaking about his case in a documentary, "Laredo and the Law," directed by Folke Ryden; produced by Sveriges Television (New York, NY: Filmakers Library, 2000). Miguel's case got international media exposure. Miguel Angel has also been interviewed for several articles and books pertaining to his case. On August 3, 2018, Miguel Angel Martinez was featured in a true crime docuseries aired by Netflix, "I Am a Killer," in the 10-episode, "Sympathy for the Devil." "If life could be compared to a rose, right now I have only seen and felt the thorns. I have seen no bloom, felt no soft petals or smelled only sweet scent. I used to live under the belief that I did not deserve happiness that my fate was to experience pain and misery. My road to perdition: how my life came to be so defined by one night in January and that became the first major event to determine by my acts and choice, where my path would lead. Experimental or anecdotal record of the years beyond that night. Inward emotional, psychological, and spiritual path that wound through my road to perdition and the anecdotal record of the years beyond that night, the much more accurate and significant part of my story. My whole life is just what it is, so much of it a matter of public record, to be learned and relived by anyone who was not there the first go-round." Miguel Angel Martinez

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the most infamous criminal proceeding in history--the trial of Jesus of Nazareth--have to tell us about capital punishment in the United States? Jesus Christ was a prisoner on death row. If that statement surprises you, consider this fact: of all the roles that Jesus played--preacher, teacher, healer, mentor, friend--none features as prominently in the gospels as this one, a criminal indicted and convicted of a capital offense. Now consider another fact: the arrest, trial, and execution of Jesus bear remarkable similarities to the American criminal justice system, especially in capital cases. From the use of paid informants to the conflicting testimony of witnesses to the denial of clemency, the elements in the story of Jesus' trial mirror the most common components in capital cases today. Finally, consider a question: How might we see capital punishment in this country differently if we realized that the system used to condemn the Son of God to death so closely resembles the system we use in capital cases today? Should the experience of Jesus' trial, conviction, and execution give us pause as we take similar steps to place individuals on death row today? These are the questions posed by this surprising, challenging, and enlightening book

Book excerpt: “Magick is not a path for followers; it is a path for questioners, seekers, and anyone who has trouble settling for dogma and pre-formulated answers. Magick is for those who feel the desire to peel away the surface of reality and see what lies beneath. Like various persecuted forms of mysticism, magick promotes direct contact with the source of creation.” —Damien Echols Discover a Powerful Practice for Transforming Yourself and Your Reality At age 18, Damien Echols was sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. “I spent my years in prison training to be a true magician,” he recalls. “I used magick—the practice of reshaping reality through our intention and will—to stave off incredible pain, despair, and isolation. But the most amazing feat of all that practice and study was to manifest my freedom.” With High Magick, this bestselling author shares his first teaching book on the powerful spiritual techniques that helped him survive and transcend his ordeal on death row. Though our culture has consigned “magic” to fiction, stage illusions, or superstitions about dark practices, the magick Damien learned is an ancient Western tradition equal the Eastern practices of Buddhism, Taoism, and yoga in its wisdom and transformative power. Here he brings you an engaging and highly accessible guide for bringing magick into your own life, including: • What is High Magick? Damien clears away the stigma and reveals the history and core teachings of this extraordinary art. • The Four-Fold Breath—a foundational meditation practice to train your mind and body to channel subtle energies. • The Middle Pillar—how to bring divine energy into the central channel of your body for empowerment and healing. • The Qabalistic Cross—a centering technique to help you stay balanced and protected regardless of circumstances. • The Lesser Rituals of the Pentagram—powerful practices for banishing negative energies and invoking energy to manifest your goals. • Working with angelic beings and other spiritual allies to support your practice. • Creating thoughtforms to assist you in your ongoing magickal development. • Guidance for overcoming your doubts, enhancing your visualization skills, creating talismans, practicing magick ethically, and much more. “Magick is a journey,” writes Damien. “It’s a continuously unfolding path that has no end. You can study and practice magick for the rest of your life and you will still never learn everything that it has to teach you.” If you’re ready to discover your untapped potential for co-creating your reality with the energy of the divine, then join this extraordinary teacher to begin your training in High Magick.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: In January 1983 Burt Folsom read a story in Time about Mitch Rutledge, a man on death row with an IQ of 84 who said he was sorry for what he did. "Forget him," the last line of the story read. But Burt wrote Mitch a letter and discovered a man more interesting and intelligent than the article revealed. Burt and his wife, Anita, began a friendship with Mitch and saw him become a leader and role model for others in prison, teaching himself to read and write (starting with copying down the spelling of items he knew from TV commercials) and becoming a national spokesman on prison life. Death on Hold is the amazing story of their friendship, and of grace, reconciliation, and redemption for a man without hope who was given a future.

We each march to the beat of our own opinionated drums. As we do, the beat continues to go on and on and on. Lah deeh dah deeh deeh . . . Lah deeh dah deeh dah. The interviews continue in book 7 with opinions and facts that you may or may not agree with. These opinions are part of the journey to show that we as humans are very different from one another. Be patient as you disagree with some of the interviews and opinions. Then all hell breaks loose. The truth is finally revealed. In book 5, a brother was lost. No one is perfect, as more confessions come forth in book 8. A lost boy of a large family is found by sheer chance. Lovers depart from each other as a wedding and a fairy-tale honeymoon take place. A third brother is discovered, with a son finding his dad whom each had known all along. And at the same time, that discovery of father and son is lost along with a beloved grandchild. I thought it was just a dream. But then reality happens in book 10. So why do bad things happen to good people? It's called life, and sometimes life can suck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church has in recent decades been associated with political efforts to eliminate the death penalty. It was not always so. This timely work reviews and explains the Catholic Tradition regarding the death penalty, demonstrating that it is not inherently evil and that it can be reserved as a just form of punishment in certain cases. Drawing upon a wealth of philosophical, scriptural, theological, and social scientific arguments, the authors explain the perennial teaching of the Church that capital punishment can in principle be legitimate—not only to protect society from immediate physical danger, but also to administer retributive justice and to deter capital crimes. The authors also show how some recent statements of Church leaders in opposition to the death penalty are prudential judgments rather than dogma. They reaffirm that Catholics may, in good conscience, disagree about the application of the death penalty. Some arguments against the death penalty falsely suggest that there has been a rupture in the Church's traditional teaching and thereby inadvertently cast doubt on the reliability of the Magisterium. Yet, as the authors demonstrate, the Church's traditional teaching is a safeguard to society, because the just use of the death penalty can be used to protect the lives of the innocent, inculcate a horror of murder, and affirm the dignity of human beings as free and rational creatures who must be held responsible for their actions. By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed challenges contemporary Catholics to engage with Scripture, Tradition, natural law, and the actual social scientific evidence in order to undertake a thoughtful analysis of the current debate about the death penalty.
