In subsequent eras he remained prominent and is still a major deity in China today. Livia Kohn's two-part study first traces the historical development of Lord Lao and the roles he played at different times for different believers. Part Two is based on one of Lord Lao's major hagiographies, the twelfth-century Youlong zhuan (Like Unto a Dragon), and studies the complex myth surrounding him. Lord Lao appears in eight distinct mythical roles, each associated with a particular phase in his life: He is the creator of the universe, bringer of cosmic order, teacher of dynasties, and the divine made flesh on earth. He is also the converter of the barbarians, the source of major Daoist revelations, and the god of Great Peace and political harmony. The name Daoism comes from the term dao, which meansa “way” or a “road” through the field or woods to one’s village. For example, the highest powers of Daoism are variously called Taishang Laojun (the deified Laozi), the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning (Yuanshi tianzun), the Jade Emperor (Yuhuang Shangdi), or the Perfected Warrior (Zhenwu). But these are expressions of dao in specific shen; they are not identical to Dao, except in the most unique case—when Laozi, the putative founder of Daoism and author of its major work, Daodejing, is said to be one with the dao. It debunks the common conceptions that are so fundamental to define the world that we are familiar with, such as logic, time and causality etc. The object of any forms of knowledge, whether natural science or psychology, is to co-ordinate our experience and ultimately, in order to fulfill our intention, project realistic outcome of the actions. Therefore, any theory that needs special knowledge is not profound enough to be even close to the truth. Only when it is simple and straightforward enough to be practical at the mass's level and meanwhile still able to offer deep insight that even leading professionals in various fields would acclaim can it be called being penetrating and far-reaching. Any rational adults, regardless of their academic background, origin, religion, gender etc., are all able to testify what is presented in the book based on their real-life experience without the assistance of any instrument. Although the book only contains twenty thousand words, it's an encyclopedia that is even more comprehensive than all the others combined. Although it only takes hours to read, it would take lifetime to digest. It negates the whole knowledge system of the contemporary world. It is a single theory that explains all the phenomena, whether existing or emerging, whatever matter or consciousness. It answers questions that are insoluble under the orthodox doctrine. Of course, the book has no intention to convince people anything. It just offers a chance to review the belief system that is previously deemed indubitable. Lastly, I still recommend Tao Te Ching to my readers as the explicitness of my book comes at the cost of its profoundness.
