Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of my calling in hospice nursing, and my witness of the mercy and grace of God, in the hearts of those so close to dying. We have all lost a loved one, and sometimes we wonder if they are indeed with Christ. It was such a blessing, to see how the Lord drew so many to Him, in many different ways, because of His great love for us. I pray that this book may be a comfort for those who are grieving, and an encouragement for all who read it. After all, one day we will all find ourselves at the gates of heaven.

Book excerpt: Ten years ago, Kate Braestrup and her husband Drew were enjoying the life they shared together. They had four young children, and Drew, a Maine state trooper, would soon begin training to become a minister as well. Then early one morning Drew left for work and everything changed. On the very roads that he protected every day, an oncoming driver lost control, and Kate lost her husband. Stunned and grieving, Kate decided to continue her husband's dream and became a minister herself. And in that capacity she found a most unusual mission: serving as the minister on search and rescue missions in the Maine woods, giving comfort to people whose loved ones are missing, and to the wardens who sometimes have to deal with awful outcomes. Whether she is with the parents of a 6-year-old girl who had wandered into the woods, with wardens as they search for a snowmobile rider trapped under the ice, or assisting a man whose sister left an infant seat and a suicide note in her car by the side of the road, Braestrup provides solace, understanding, and spiritual guidance when it's needed most. Here if You Need Me is the story of Kate Braestrup's remarkable journey from grief to faith to happiness. It is dramatic, funny, deeply moving, and simply unforgettable, an uplifting account about finding God through helping others, and the tale of the small miracles that occur every day when life and love are restored.

This is a book of inspirational stories and poems written to promote faith, hope, and camaraderie among people with similar plights. It is not a self-help book. It is a God-help book. The writers demonstrate how they received God's help when they were far beyond self-help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enlightening volume provides first-hand perspectives and ethnographic research on communication at the end of life, a topic that has gone largely understudied in communication literature. Author Elissa Foster’s own experiences as a volunteer hospice caregiver form the basis of the book. Communicating at the End of Life recounts the stories of Foster and six other volunteers and their communicative experiences with dying patients, using communication theory and research findings to identify insights on the relationships they form throughout the process. What unfolds is a scholarly examination of a subject that is significant to every individual at some point in the life process. Organized chronologically to follow the course of Foster’s involvement with hospice and the phases of the study, the book opens with Part 1, providing background and contextual information to help readers understand subsequent stories about communication between volunteers and patients. Part 2 of the volume emphasizes the adjustments required by the volunteers as they entered the world of hospice and the worlds of the patients. Part 3 underscores the importance of improvisation and finding balance within the role of volunteer—in particular how to be fully present for patients as well as their family members. The volume concludes with Part 4, which addresses how volunteers coped with the death of their patients and what they learned from the experience of volunteering. Communicating at the End of Life is appropriate for scholars and advanced students studying personal relationships, health communication, gerontology, interpersonal communication, lifespan communication, and communication & aging. Its unique content offers precious and meaningful insights on the communication processes at a critical point in the life process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compelling story of relentless faith achieved through tremendous loss, unbearable pain, suffering, betrayal, a spirit crushed, a heart shattered, even death itself. "I should have lost my mind, I should have died." Only a God of all the universe could have saved me, and He did. He literally brought me out from the pit of hell. He gave me a hope, a future, a purpose for the pain. A story to tell. Life is rough and certainly not always fair. We must constantly struggle in a world lost between good and evil. We live with the realities of pain, sickness, and death. We live in a world that is constantly decaying. Even if we turn our life over to God, what is there to look forward too? First Peter 1:3-6 tells us: "Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance, an inheritance that is kept in Heaven for you . . . And through your faith, God is protecting you by His power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while." The apostle Paul offers this encouragement: "Since we are His children, we are His heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share His glory, we must also share His suffering. Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later. For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who His children really are" (Romans 8:17-19). Jesus said: "You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it" (Matthew 7:13-14). What I have learned along this narrow road is my God is good! He walks through the fire with me. I do not have to be afraid. Just trust in Him, not this world. He will make beauty from your ashes. He will cause everything bad in your life to turn around for good. My story is twenty years in the making. Destiny has finally arrived. God has a plan. And it will be fulfilled!
