Book excerpt: Most Christians know they lack something, the reality of God's presence in their life and His power working in and through them. His power to help them in their life, His power to transform their life and His power to help them serve Him. However if we are honest for most Christians God's presence and the notion of His power working in their life is a concept rather than a reality. They 'have a form of godliness but lack the power of God in their life' (2Timothy 3:5 paraphrased). But...One of the natural laws is that you can only fill empty open vessels. You cannot fill an empty vessel which is closed; you have to open it before you can fill it. And you cannot fill a vessel which is full even if full with the wrong kind of stuff; you have to empty it before you can fill it. God established that natural law Himself and it seems He doesn't bypass it.We come across many empty open vessels in the Bible. For example Elisha and the poor widow in the Old Testament. The miracles of Jesus in the New Testament - the miraculous turning water into wine through His power started with empty open vessels; on two occasions miraculously filling Peter's empty net with fish through His power; and on two occasions miraculously feeding (filling) a hungry crowd (empty human vessels) through His power. And of course the empty tomb. Could it be that 'empty open vessels' teach us something about how God reveals His power in us to transform us, to help us serve Him or do His will or to help us in our life? This book explores the 'Parable of the Empty Open Vessel', how God fills 'empty open human vessels' with His power. Empty and open human vessels who are hungry and thirsty for God and His power in their life, and are reaching to God with desire to be filled.

God allows suffering because He knows how powerful it can be to our spiritual lives and to helping us fully embrace His love and mercy. Combining her training in psychology and counseling with real-life examples, Jeannie will show you that there is much life to be lived in the midst of loss, and that all things – even the most painful life experiences – are working together for a greater good. You’ll also learn: The all-too-often misunderstood difference between grief and depression. The spiritual benefits to uniting your crosses with Jesus’s Passion and Death. The counterintuitive notion that grief and joy can coexist. The spiritual danger of internalizing our pain and hiding it from othersHow great saints like St. John of the Cross and St. Therese of Liseux struggled to make sense out of suffering. The six spiritual principles that will assist you on the journey of navigating grief. How to know when you should seek professional help.Ways in which God is calling you to bring hope and joy to those dwelling in darkness. How to confidently confront the nothingness and emptiness you feel in your interior life. And Meditations on the Stations of the Cross, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Seven Sorrows of Mary that will help you reflect on how redemptive suffering can help you embrace God’s love and mercy.

Book excerpt: It feels like our world is moving in new, uncertain directions and in unknown waters where you need a good anchor. In Jesus Christ, who is our Rock, we have hope as an anchor for the soul. To not be set adrift, one needs to stay connected to that anchor. I have found it is only by regular time in God's Word that it happens. We believe the promise recorded in 1 Peter 1:24-25: The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever. Day by day, as we come to God's Enduring Word, He has wisdom, strength, and blessing to give us. We can weather storms and enjoy calm waters. We can grow in seasons of drought and bear a harvest for God's kingdom year-round. For 25 years I have prepared a weekly devotional. Here are 365 selected Scripture passages along with an inspirational, encouraging, and helpful thought. My prayer is that you would know and enjoy more and more of God's enduring word. In Jesus, David Guzik

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the more intimate vein of personal Bible study and commentary pioneered by Beth Moore, lay aside the staid and sometimes boring vision of Paul as an early church patriarch and instead explore an in-depth study of the historical, political, and social traditions from which he wrote to understand the ways in which his own journey was being impacted, even as he traveled and ministered to others. Far from being tedious, as he so often seems, Paul was passionate, eloquent, politically discerning, and utterly human. Through extensive exegetical study and personal narrative, Paul's life becomes a compelling example by which to live, and his words to the Philippians become one of God's greatest love letters to His church.

Book excerpt: Volume 35 Sermons 2062-2120 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and frank exploration of the future of Christianity and whether it needs to be saved. We live in confusing times. Our society has shifted on its moral axis, and many are asking whether Christianity needs to be reinvented--or even reimagined--in order to save it. With Newsweek declaring "The Decline and Fall of Christian America" on its cover and The Daily Beast questioning "Does Christianity Have a Future?" bloggers and Christian commentators are discussing whether we need a "new of kind of Christianity." In Saving Christianity? Dr. Michael Youssef explores this train of thought and its pitfalls. He describes how similar discussions in Christianity's recent past explored the very same question. Saving Christianity? will help you discern what is going on within the church while it reviews the essentials of the Christian faith as described in the Bible. We dare not abandon this "mere faith," as Dr. Youssef describes it, because it is the light for all humanity--and especially for those of us living in today's chaotic times. After reading Saving Christianity? you'll have a renewed confidence in the future of the church and the central place it will occupy for generations to come.
