Book excerpt: An ambitious lawyer, a scandalous family secret, and a loan shark. Take these three elements and paint them onto a backdrop of upper-class Paris and you have Honore de Balzac's 'Gobseck'. The lawyer just happens to act for the loan shark, and he knows the secret that Anastasie de Restaud, who has married into the aristocracy, is having an affair and blowing her money on her lover. Which financial strings can the lawyer and loan shark pull? And who will be tied up by them? If you like Charles Dickens 'Bleak House' and Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice', you will love this. Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist and playwright, most famous for a sequence of novels, collectively called 'The Human Comedy'. His signature style was a warts-and-all representation of post-Napoleonic French life, rich in detail and featuring complex, unfiltered characters. The style means Balzac is regarded as one of the pioneers of European literary realism. He is named as an influence on writers including Emile Zola, Henry James, Charles Dickens, and Gustave Flaubert. The first novel he published under his own name was 'Les Chouans' in 1829. In 1834 he hit upon the idea of grouping his novels together to record all of society. The result, over a period of years, was 'The Human Comedy', which comprised three categories: 'Analytic Studies'; 'Philosophical Studies'; 'Studies of Manners'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. As you read this summary, you will discover how the relationships of power and money in the society of 1830 presented in Gobseck reflect today's world. You will also discover : how the new Gobseck illustrates money as the driving force behind people's actions and ambitions; that the character of Gobseck, stingy with genius, is neither all black nor all white; how Gobseck, by dominating his passion for money, dominates others; how literature highlights the consequences of avarice. Balzac, canonical author of French literature, may seem outdated, and the scale of his work may frighten. Indeed, the worlds he describes may seem foreign to you. They are not! On the contrary, this author has sought throughout his life to describe a society in constant mutation after the earthquake of the French Revolution. This society is still relevant today and, around it, the notion of money has become central. This notion takes on its full meaning in Gobseck, a short story published in 1830, during the first years of writing the works that would provide the whole of the vast Comédie humaine. How, in this short story, does Balzac make money the major force that animates men? *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a period when the field of literary studies turned away from texts to "theory," Novel Configurations: A Study of French Fiction has become an underground classic. Although it proposes a theory, that theory is inductive and solidly based in real works of fiction. While looking again at significant masterpieces that range from the early nineteenth-to the late twentieth-centuries, from the creations of traditional french writers to that of an Argentine who spent most of his productive life in France. Allan H. Pasco has perceptively indicted new but valid close readings that have revolutionized our view of these works. He suggests that La Chartreuse de Parme is rigorously organized, that Balzac was a narrational minimalists, that Huysmans developed novelistic strategies that would be played out in the Nouvea Roman, that Proust intended good readers to come away from A la recherche du temps perdu with very different but complementary interpretations, that Robbe-Grillet's La Jalousie turns on a plot that seems strange only because it takes place in the mind of the narrator. From these philololgically sophisticated interpretations, Pasco lucidly, elegantly, and wittily points to categories that include all fiction. Concentrating on patterns and description, on the one hand, and external and internal organization, on the other, Novel configurations proposes a new classification that can be easily taught to novices though it will help even professional readers understand the most complex fictional innovations.
