Book Synopsis English Verb Classes and Alternations by : Beth Levin
Download or read book English Verb Classes and Alternations written by Beth Levin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rich reference work, Beth Levin classifies over 3,000 English verbs according to shared meaning and behavior. Levin starts with the hypothesis that a verb's meaning influences its syntactic behavior and develops it into a powerful tool for studying the English verb lexicon. She shows how identifying verbs with similar syntactic behavior provides an effective means of distinguishing semantically coherent verb classes, and isolates these classes by examining verb behavior with respect to a wide range of syntactic alternations that reflect verb meaning. The first part of the book sets out alternate ways in which verbs can express their arguments. The second presents classes of verbs that share a kernel of meaning and explores in detail the behavior of each class, drawing on the alternations in the first part. Levin's discussion of each class and alternation includes lists of relevant verbs, illustrative examples, comments on noteworthy properties, and bibliographic references. The result is an original, systematic picture of the organization of the verb inventory. Easy to use, English Verb Classes and Alternations sets the stage for further explorations of the interface between lexical semantics and syntax. It will prove indispensable for theoretical and computational linguists, psycholinguists, cognitive scientists, lexicographers, and teachers of English as a second language.

Book Synopsis Early Modern Northern English Lexis by : Javier Ruano-García
Download or read book Early Modern Northern English Lexis written by Javier Ruano-García and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of regional 'Englishes' in the Early Modern period still presents numerous lacunae that need to be filled, in order to provide a complete insight into the English linguistic setting at this time. This book aims to remedy these deficiencies in some measure. In particular, this monograph seeks to shed light upon the history of Early Modern Northern English vocabulary by means of the first corpus of Early Modern texts where Northern linguistic traits are used for literary purposes. It provides a linguistically documented description of Northern words from a synchronic standpoint, dealing with their distribution, etymology, as well as with some of their morphological and semantic characteristics. In addition, this study offers a discussion of the Early Modern literary representations of Northern speech. A thorough revision of the treatment that Northern lexical items are given in contemporary and modern lexicographic sources is also presented, together with a glossary that outlines the diachronic profile of the terms gathered.

Book Synopsis English Resultatives by : Seizi Iwata
Download or read book English Resultatives written by Seizi Iwata and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to develop a force-recipient account of English resultatives. Within this approach the post-verbal NP is a recipient of a verbal force, whether it is a subcategorized object or not, and the verbal force being exerted onto the post-verbal NP is responsible for bringing about the change as specified by the result phrase. It is shown that many apparent puzzles posed by English resultatives are due to the complex interplay between the verb meaning and the constructional meaning, or between the verb meaning and the semantics of the result phrase. Thus the proposed account can provide answers to the question “Which resultatives are possible and which are not?” in a coherent way. Also, the proposed account reveals that English resultatives are not a monolithic phenomenon, and that some “resultatives” cited in the literature as such are not resultatives at all. This book is of interest not only to practitioners of Construction Grammar but also to everyone interested in English resultatives.
Book Synopsis The Book of Not Entirely Useful Advice by : A.F. Harrold
Download or read book The Book of Not Entirely Useful Advice written by A.F. Harrold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From acclaimed writer A.F. Harrold comes a riotous poetry collection that encourages readers to think critically--perfect for fans of Shel Silverstein! Packed with silly rhymes and witty wordplay, A.F. Harrold's poetry is positively bursting with fun--and advice. But it's not always the most useful. . . Never apologize to a door you've walked into, unless it's a really special door. Don't serve a cat soup when the cat wants jelly. Tomato soup won't fill a feline belly. Don't put a rock in a roll, unless you hate having teeth. Among the seemingly nonsensical stanzas on onions, sausages, and kilted koalas are exercises in critical thinking--what advice should readers follow, and what should they dismiss? Harrold's short, clever poems work seamlessly alongside Mini Grey's vibrant art to create visual gags that will have readers in stitches. Both silly and poignant, this book is perfect for curious readers, poets, and cabbages everywhere!
Download or read book Against the Tide written by Lester Fisher and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peace Corps invited Lester Michael Klungness to Kenya, he served in the idyllic Hills of Taita where began a romantic involvement with a Taita woman ... and her 5 children. Their happy two years together ended when he was exiled from Taita by his military induction notice. By happenstance, he was declared unfit for military service, but Richard Nixon changed the course of his life. The Peace Corps budget cuts excluded him from returning to Kenya and to re-assignment. He worked for a beekeeper, and then returned to college to pursue his master’s degree. After a successful quarter at UC Davis, he happened on a summer job at Weyerhaeuser Co. Research Division. He successfully moved up to a permanent position. He believed he could afford to bring the African family to America. It took years, and they did not all come at the same time. Finally, he got them all to the little four acre homestead in Tenino Washington. Life was not easy, but the family farmed. The two oldest youths got jobs and established their own lives. The younger three and their American-born brother were able to attend local schools, and life seemed to be going well. Then Weyerhaeuser decided to move their research divisions to an urban facility at Federal Way WA; this was a disaster for our family! Lester told his manager that he would not continue as a permanent employee, but would contract his services. At first the Company hired him, but it was not enough. He took a summer job as a raspberry farm manager. When he returned to the Weyerhaeuser Co. base, he taught class and did contracts for Weyerhaeuser, but could not earn enough from contracts outside of the Weyerhaeuser. The situation became desperate. The only solution was to return to UC Davis, and reenroll in the master’s degree program and receive financial aid. Contracts began to pour in, so he was able to support the family at home. Finally he was hired on a federal project by which he would have been able to return the whole family to Africa. The wife came to Davis, and signed a contract on married student housing, but she never agreed to move the family to Davis. He broke off his education and returned to Washington to find out what had happened. She was not at home, but had rented out the house, and moved the family to Tacoma. He took the summer manager job on the raspberry farm, hoping to resolve the family issues. It failed and a young woman convinced him to return to UC Davis and finish his degree. One young man’s account chronicles the most turbulent growth in United States history. These were expansions in technology, global influence, wealth, power, popular unrest, and human rights. These changed America from an isolationist, racist enclave, to the present confusing, liberating, imperialistic and ideologically-divided envy of the world.
