Book excerpt: Weight is one of the overriding concerns most people in today's world, especially in the Western Hemisphere, have. As a society, we have collaboratively created a billion-dollar industry focused on weight loss, and you probably know many of the programs that are out there. However, at the root of this amazing marketing coup is the creation of the "perfect" body and shape that keeps being pushed into our lives, even if we avoid media indoctrination. The question then needs to be: why? Why is this weight loss that I have worked on for the last six months, dropping thirty-four pounds, only temporary? Why did I gain ten pounds initially but am now underweight again? Why am I not gaining and maintaining more weight, which would be beneficial? What am I missing? What are we missing in this dieting world? This question is at the heart of my coaching the 5 keys to your IDEAL weight and this little book. This question opens the door to so many that we need to answer in this process, many of which I will share with you here. My goal is to empower you and help you unify again, help you reconnect with your beautiful you--just as I was able to do once I arrived at the root issue. This book is about your IDEAL weight, whether that means you are in a situation where you need to lose or gain weight. There are many who have taken weight loss to the unhealthy level of being underweight, and this book can also help them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. To aid in developing strategies for prevention and remediation of overweight in military personnel, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command requested the Committee on Military Nutrition Research to review the scientific evidence for: factors that influence body weight, optimal components of a weight loss and weight maintenance program, and the role of gender, age, and ethnicity in weight management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents have unique nutritional needs when compared to young children and adults. As youth go through physical, cognitive, and behavioral development, nutrition needs are dynamic and changing. If these needs go undetected and remain unaddressed, the results can derail physical and social maturation and include life-long effects on health. This comprehensive text offers a multidisciplinary perspective on aspects of adolescent nutrition. Using clinical cases, it covers relevant topics related to adolescent health including normal development, chronic health conditions, and complex biopsychosocial dynamics, among others. The first section of the text contains an overview of adolescent nutrition that is further broken down into more specific topics such as developmental nutrition needs, needs of active youth and athletes and media influences on body image. The next section focuses on health disparities such as culturally appropriate care, health equity, international considerations and food insecurity. The following section specifically addresses eating disorders ranging from anorexia and bulimia to binge eating. Finally, the last section covers additional health considerations such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, teen pregnancy, substance use and gender non-conforming youth. Written by experts in the field, this book is a helpful resource for primary care medical providers, registered dietitians/nutritionists (RDN), adolescent medicine specialists, as well as advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, psychologists, licensed social workers, and certified athletic trainers. /div

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatment outcome has certainly improved since Stunkard and McLaren-Hume (1959) reviewed the literature and found that less than 25% of obese patients lost 20 pounds or more and less than 5% lost 40 pounds or more. However, one of the few points on which almost all obesity researchers agree is that to date, our results are quite modest and we are generally unsuccessful in promoting effective weight maintenance among obese persons. As the title of a more recent article, "Improving long-term weight loss: Pushing the limits of treatment," (Brownell & Jeffrey, 1987, [emphasis added]) suggests, many believe that we have pushed our current treatment paradigms to the limit. It was with this background in mind that we organized the meeting from which these proceedings issue. The purpose of the three day international meeting was to evaluate the current knowledge base and conceptual paradigms of obesity treatment and to suggest directions for future research and clinical practice. Rather than simply for research reporting, the meeting was primarily for research generation. All speakers were established scientists in the field who were asked to summarize our state of knowledge in a given area rather than present the results of their latest research. Great efforts were taken to ensure that panel discussions occupied a central portion of the conference, and that the questions "What else do we need to know?" and "How do we find it out?" were consistently addressed.
